Kathleen Grantham Short

Kathleen Grantham Short, of Thomaston, passed away on July 14, 2024, at West Village Retirement Center. She was 98 years old. Born in Ellaville, Georgia on April 24, 1926, she was the daughter of the late James Joeabb Grantham and the late Minnie Eubanks Grantham.

Funeral services for Mrs. Short will be held on Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11:00 AM, at Thomaston First Methodist Church.  A private family interment will follow the service.  The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church from 10:00 until the funeral hour.

A long-time resident of Thomaston, Mrs. Short graduated from R. E. Lee Institute in 1943 and then from Valdosta State Women's College in 1947 with a degree in English. In high school and college, she enjoyed a variety of sports including basketball, golf, and swimming. After graduation, she married Charles Lafayette Short and was employed by the Thomaston City School System for many years teaching English to middle school and high school students. Additionally, Mrs. Short taught English for several years at Westwood Academy. She is remembered fondly by her students as an excellent teacher.

Mrs. Short was active in several community organizations throughout the years including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Thomaston Recreation Committee, and the Thomaston Ladies' Golf Association. She was an avid bridge player and a member of the Duplicate Bridge Club. In 1952 she was a charter member of The Green Thumb Garden Club and served as President in 1954.

As a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mrs. Short was a member of the Service Sunday School class, United Methodist Women, the Golden Age Club and served on several church committees.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lafayette Short, sisters Mavis Kelly and Irene Trice Sawyer, and granddaughter Whitney Camille Short.

Survivors include her three children, Steve (San) Short, David (Angie) Short, and Ellen (Bob) Cunningham; seven grandchildren, Kara (Evan) Johnson, Kyle Short, Chas (Susannah) Short, Cam (Kristyn) Short, Seth (Callie) Short, Will Cunningham and John Cunningham; and five great grandchildren, Maddyn Kathleen Short, Warren Aldine Short, Charles Evan Johnson, Jr., Mathis San Johnson, and Lawton Kathleen Johnson. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews.
