Harold Lawrence "Larry" Hudson

MR Harold Lawrence "Larry" Hudson on Barnesville passed away On October 24, 2023, less than a week after celebrating his 89th birthday,p Harold Lawrence “Larry” “DadDad” Hudson left this earth to join his only son, Alan Lawrence Hudson, on the bank of the most beautiful fishing hole they ever experienced. Those who knew the two anglers best can easily imagine the whopper storytellings they are now hosting.

Larry was born a storyteller. Perhaps it was his way of keeping up with his older siblings. The last born of Robert Hoge Hudson and Esthal McGraw’s seven children, he always had the attention of a large family audience. But one significant family member was missing from his life way too early. His father died of pneumonia just 18 months after his birth, leaving his mother to raise her seven children alone. Knowing he was raised with out a father makes the job he did fathering his own children, Alan and Karen, even more impressive.

After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1952 (Beckley,WV), Larry worked as a radio-repairman at Doy Radio & Television Service (Beckley, WV). In 1954 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving as Fire Control Technician on the U.S.S. WREN. After completing his service in the Armed Forces he returned to his beloved West Virginia where he eventually began working at the Beckley West Virginia Manufacturing Plant. There he met Janice Marie Blankenship, his future wife, who was also employed there. In 1959 the two married, a bond that would last until his death 64 years later.  Soon after his marriage, Larry went to work for National Cash Register (NCR). A collaboration that would last over 30 years and take him and his family to numerous areas of the country including Ohio, Connecticut, and South Carolina before settling down in Albany, Georgia for over a decade. Once his children finished high school, he and Janice went on the road again with NCR making stops in Jacksonville, and Tallahassee, Florida.

In 1990, upon his retirement from NCR, Larry and Janice chose to make one final move, settling on a small picturesque farm outside Barnesville, Georgia. Soon after, their son Alan joined them in Buggytown and planted the seed on their small ten acre farm that would over the next thirty years blossom into a farm that today encompasses over 250 acres, and is known as Southern Nursery Products (SNP).While NCR took Larry and his family from his beloved West Virginia home, his love affair with the state, particularly the area around his home in Piney View, never waned for him.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and son, and all of his siblings, brothers James, Robert and Charles Hudson and sisters Lillian Hudson White, Evelyn Hudson Elliott, and Virginia Hudson Lodmell.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janice Blankenship Hudson (Barnesville, GA), daughter Karen Hudson (Lexington, KY), grand-daughters Erin Hudson Looper (Easley, SC) and Shannon Marie Hudson (Woodstock, GA), daughter-in-law, Sandra Hudson (Barnesville, GA), son-in-law Jameson Looper, and grandson Weston Looper (both of Easley, SC).

Larry will be laid to rest on the family farm on Friday, October 27, at 11:00 AM. On the family farm in Barnesville. Dr. Jeff Morgan will officiate.

If you saw Larry driving about town in his GMC pick-up-truck, you knew he was never alone. He went no where without his trusted dogs. He loved them all, but one, Evie Rose, held a special place in his heart. Once abused, over a long period, Evie Rose was nursed back to health by Dolly Goodpuppy, before being adopted by Larry and Janice. In lieu of flowers, it would have delighted dad if memorial contributions were sent to Dolly Goodpuppy Society, P.O. Box 361, Barnesville, GA 30204, giving them the ability to save many more Evie Roses.

James Eugene Craft, Sr. (Gene) was born on October 28, 1934 in Hogansville, Georgia to Les and Wilma Craft. He had one older sister, Barbara Carol Craft Piper and one brother, Roger Randall (Randy) Craft. He spent most of his formative years living on the mill village in Thomaston, Georgia, enjoying fishing and wading in the Flint River, and becoming one of the very first Eagle Scouts in Thomaston. He joined the navy at the young age of 17 and spent the next three years of his life serving his country on an aircraft carrier in the Philippine Sea during the Korean War. He returned home for a visit and met a beautiful young lady named Shirley Anne Barfield. Upon returning from the war, he made her his wife. They were married for 63 years and had many adventures and raised two children, Teresa Jeaneane Craft Duke and James Eugene (Jim) Craft, Jr. At 37 years of age, he gave his heart to Christ and shortly afterward felt a call into the ministry, and they packed up most of their belongings and headed to Colorado to attend Nazarene Bible College to prepare for the ministry. He served in the Nazarene church taking several home mission churches and helping to grow them into successful ministries. He retired back to Thomaston where he undertook the task of building his own home. They settled back in, surrounded by family and friends and spent their remaining years in that home. He lost his wife two years ago and has spent the last two years enjoying his family and recently moved in with his daughter Teresa to spend his final days there. He has anxiously been anticipating his final journey to his forever home, yearning to see his Lord and Savior and his loved ones who preceded him in death. He made it home Thursday morning. He is finally where he has longed to be. Reddon Mildred Sweat Smith,

Mrs. Reddon Mildred Sweat Smith, age 93, of Griffin, formerly of Thomaston, passed away October 5, 2023. Mrs. Smith grew up on a farm in Dixie Union, Ga. One of 12 children born to the late Lonnie Sweat and Annie Dean Sweat. She moved to Thomaston in 1971, when she and her husband, Hollis, opened Big Chic.

Most everyone knew her as “Granny” and the owner of Big Chic on Barnesville St. A family business that she stayed involved in throughout most of her life. She was known for her kind heart and dark black hair. She loved to go play the slot machines and it became almost a right of passage for our family. When she was at home, you could usually find her watching the Braves game or her afternoon “stories” and if it was warm outside, she would be sitting in the carport or blowing out the leaves. She enjoyed cooking but she loved it even more to see someone eat! Getting a second helping of her food was the way to her heart and her chicken and rice was unmatched. When asked what her secret was (living independently up until she was 91 without hardly ever being in the hospital), we assumed her answer would be two diet cokes a day or bacon with every breakfast, but instead her answer was always: Family. She lived through us and for us. To be loved by her felt special. You knew it because she made sure you did in her actions and her words.

She was the toughest person. We always say she was just built different. 93 years of love and loss, she stood strong in her faith and it got her through everything. She is already so missed and I hope she knew how truly loved she was. We will strive everyday to keep her memory alive and continuing the legacy she worked so hard to leave. Love you, Granny.

Dorothy “Dot” Gloria Brannon

Ms. Dorothy “Dot” Gloria Brannon, age 81, of Meansville, passed away October 1, 2023.  She was born in Experiment, GA, daughter of the late Willie Hue Brannon and Helen Dorothy Waters Brannon. She lived in Meansville for most of her life. Dot was affectionately known as “Tootsie” to her classmates at Meansville Elementary School. She was a 1960 graduate of Pike County High School where she was voted Most Athletic.

After graduation, Dot attended Columbia Bible College and then graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC.  She was a teacher at Calvary Baptist School in Hampton, GA, before surrendering to be a missionary. Dot spent over 10 years in Brazil sharing the gospel with Baptist Mid Missions.  After returning from the mission field in 1993 to be close to her aging mother, Dot attended nursing school at Gordon College with her niece Cindy. They graduated from Gordon College School of Nursing in 1996 and Dot found her calling as a hospice nurse at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City, GA. In 2006, Dot moved back home to the Brannon homeplace to care for her mother, Helen, as her health declined. The family was so thankful for Dot caring for their mom and grandmother with the absolute best care and allowing her to stay in her home. Dot would return to Southwest Christian Hospice for a few more years before retirement. She truly enjoyed ministering to patients and their families.

Dot enjoyed reading, studying her Bible, taking pictures, eating lunch at Peachtree Café with friends and cheering on her Georgia Bulldogs. Dot enjoyed many activities, but she truly adored spending time with her family and friends. Dot was always the one with the camera in her hand documenting every aspect of the get-together or event. She loved any friendly function where she could eat and talk. There was no doubt that Dot knew Heaven was her home and her heart’s desire was for all to know Him as their Savior like she did.  She was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Tabernacle in Thomaston.
