MRS. TONYA LYNNE CROCKETT

Mrs. Tonya Lynne Crockett, age 59, of Woodbury, died Thursday, April 29, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Crockett was born May 16, 1961 in Thomaston, to the late Edward O'Neil Tindell and the late Mrytle Bridges Tindell. She worked for a cleaning service for a number of years and attended The Cove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her companion Casey Hicks of Woodbury, Daughter Rebecca Crockett of Thomaston, son Terry Wayne Crockett of Cleveland,TN, Brothers Rex Tindell of Manchester, John Tindell of Thomaston and Gayle Whitehead of Thomaston and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Saturday May 1, 2021 at Coggins Funeral Home from 6 to 8 pm. The Funeral Service will be Sunday May 2, 2020, 2:00 PM in The Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery.

MRS. HAZEL SPRAYBERRY SHEPHERD

Mrs. Hazel Sprayberry Shepherd, age 91, of Shepherd Road in Meansville, entered into her Eternal Rest Sunday, April 25, 2021.

Mrs. Shepherd was born July 11, 1929, in Porterdale, Georgia to Brice and Bertha Sprayberry. Mrs. Shepherd married Wesley Eugene (Gene) Shepherd December 6, 1947, and loved going with him on trips until his death in 2007. She worked as a weaver at Thomaston mills for 38 years. Mrs. Shepherd will be remembered for enjoying riding her John Deere lawnmower, weed eating her yard, and building the fence around her yard. In her later years, she loved making ceramics and painting on glass, canvas, and cloth. After he retirement, she enjoyed traveling with her family. She joined the Thomaston Church of God on November 5, 1961, and was a dedicated Christian who was faithful in supporting the Kingdom of God.

She left a legacy that will be cherished by two daughters, Carlene (Rodney) Wainwright of Thomaston, Elaine (Danny) Henderson of Athens, Georgia; four grandchildren, Brian Nicholas of Meansville, Shelley (Neal) Wilborn of Meansville, Stephen (Andrea) Henderson of Athens, Georgia, and Philip Henderson of Amman, Jordan; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Wilborn of Meansville, Mary Syble Nicholas of Meansville, and Luke Henderson, Isabella Henderson and Jude Henderson all of Athens, Georgia; one sister Ruby Whitlock of Pennsylvania; special nephews Pete (Betty) Fleming and Hugh Fratis (Jeanette) Fleming both of Thomaston.

A celebration of Mrs. Shepherd's life will be held on Saturday May 1, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. from the Coggins Funeral Home Chapel. Family visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at Coggins Funeral Home. Bishop Danny L. Henderson, Mrs. Shepherd's son in law, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rodney Wainwright, Danny Henderson, Brian Nicholas, Neal Wilborn, Stephen Henderson, Philip Henderson, and honorary pallbearers Pete Fleming and Hugh Fratis Fleming. Burial will be in the family plot in Crystal Hill Cemetery with Bishop Stephen Henderson and Missionary Philip Henderson officiating.

MR. ROBERT HOWARD BOOKER

Mr. Robert "Bobby" Howard Booker, age 58, of Thomaston, died Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Booker was born on December 17, 1962 in Thomaston, to the late Hansel Howard Booker Jr., and the late Linda Peterson Booker. Bobby worked for 30 years with various fire departments in Upson County, most of his time was with Northside Fire Department, and worked for the Upson County EMA as the Rescue Chief for 4 years. He was the "go to" resource for river operations for a number of years. He had a vast knowledge of the Flint River and did his part to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. He was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa Booker of Thomaston, daughter, Kristi Booker Feltman of Thomaston, sons, Chris Black of Thomaston, John Booker of Thomaston, brother, Billy Booker of Thomaston, grandchildren, Reese, Lydia, Brantley, and Kylie.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. from the Pavilion at The Gathering Church. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. from the Pavilion at The Gathering Church.

Mr. Charlies Lee "Charlie" Fields, 58, of Thomaston, died Sunday, April 25,2021 at his home.

The family of Mr. Fields will hold a memorial service on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM at 252 East Moores Crossing Road in Thomaston. They will also receive friends and relatives at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.

Mr. Fields was born in Thomaston on February 27, 1963, a son of Ida Glynnis Bailey Fields and the late Charlie L. Fields. He was a self employed painter and carpenter.

Mr. Fields is survived by his mother, Ida Glynnis Fields; a daughter, Ashley; four sisters, Mary Ann Fields, Velma (Joseph) Montomery. T. J. Fields and Lou (Jimmy) Brown, all of Thomaston; a brother, Joseph (Melissa) Fields of Thomaston; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, all of whom he loved dearly.

In addition to his father he was preceded in death by brothers Henry Fields, Melvin Corley and Roger Fields.

MRS. PATSY RUTH PETERS POLLARD

Mrs. Patsy Ruth Peters Pollard age 81 of Thomaston Ga., passed away Thursday April 22, 2021 at Heritage Inn of Barnesville Ga.

Mrs. Pollard was born on July 9, 1939 in Gwinnett County Ga., to the late Ray Peters and the late Verlon Bennett Peters. She worked in the finishing department with Thomaston Mills for 25 years and was a member of Hebron Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her step son Benny Frank Pollard Jr.

Survivors include her husband Benny Frank Pollard Sr., of Thomaston Ga., daughter Melanie McCausland of Manchester Ga., step daughters Shelia (Joe) Melton of Molena Ga., Regina (Tony) McCard of Molena Ga., sons Barry (Karen) Helms of Eatonton Ga., Larry Donald "Bubba" Helms of Eatonton Ga., step son Johnny Pollard of Thomaston Ga., brothers Robbie Peters of AL., Wendall (Linda) Peters of Williamson Ga., Ronald (Clara) Peters of Monroe Ga., sister Diane Armistead of Williamson Ga., 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.

MRS. MARTHA JEAN ROBERSON

Mrs. Martha Jean Roberson, age 78, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, April 21, 2021, at Brightmoor Hospice.

Mrs. Roberson was born on September 12, 1942 in Thomaston, to the late Henry Gus Howard, and the late Eva Mae Fordham Howard. She worked at Carters for 36 years, Walmart for 20 years, and then Ingles. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Sammy Brackett Jr., and brother, Buford Dudley.

Survivors include her husband, David Thomas Roberson of Thomaston, daughters, Diane (Ronnie) Paul of Thomaston, Sandy (Randy) Glenn of Lawrenceville, step-daughter, Wanda (Don) Reynolds of Knoxville TN, step-son, Thomas (Deborah) Roberson of Cumming, grandchildren, Heath Brackett, Taylor Paul Worland, Kalee Glenn Weiland, Luke Paul, Samantha Glenn, Brandon Brackett, Hannah Brown, 3 great-grandchildren, and 2 step-grandchildren.

RETIRED UPSON CO SCHOOL SUPERINTENDANT LYNN BATES

Mr. Frank Lynnwood "Lynn" Bates, age 84, of Yatesville Ga., died Monday, April 19, 2021, at his residence.

Mr. Bates was born on November 30, 1936, in Meansville, to the late George Frank Bates, and the late Bobbie Bates. He served his country in the United States Army for 20 years, and then went on to be the Superintendent for Upson County Schools for 32 years, and 10 years at Mary Persons in Forsyth. He was a member of Yatesville Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Passmore, son, Michael L. Bates, brother, Robert Bates.

Survivors include his wife, Linda L. Bates of Yatesville, son, Todd (Linda) Bates of Yatesville, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m from Yatesville Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Fincher Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 from 5:00 p.m-7:00 p.m at Coggins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Ophelia Short Googe age 89 of Thomaston Ga., passed away Monday April 19, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Googe was born on October 27, 1931 in Meriwether County, to the late Albert Short and the late Beula Hogg Short. She was a housewife and a member of the First Pentecostal Church of Thomaston. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Martin Vernon Googe, and 13 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Delorese (Tommy) Thompson of Macon, Gloris (Larry) Foster of Thomaston, sons, Pruitt Googe of Shreveport, LA, Glenn (Diane) Googe of Thomaston, six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Luke Harvey Kennedy age 81 of Thomaston Ga., passed away Friday April 16, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Kennedy was born on December 4, 1939 in Thomaston Ga., to the late Jessie Harvey Kennedy and the late Thelma Long Kennedy. He worked in the metal fabricating business and was a saw filer for many years. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Betty Kennedy.

Mr. William Jeffrey "Jeff" Lovejoy age 54 of Thomaston Ga., died Tuesday April 13, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Lovejoy was born on September 14, 1966, in Lamar County, to the late Larry Lovejoy and Wanda Pritchett Shockley. He owned and operated his own Pest Control business, and was a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. He served his country in the US Army. In addition to his father he is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Mary Lovejoy.

MR. JAMES "LEO" CALDWELL

Mr. James "Leo" Caldwell, age 81, of Zebulon, Friday, April 9, 2021 at Navicent Health in Macon.

Mr. Caldwell was born on April 12, 1939, in Taylor County, to the late Windham Caldwell, and the late Lala Ivey Caldwell. He served his country in the US Navy aboard the USS Boxer. He worked as an electrician and maintenance supply for Pike County, and was also a member of Mt. View Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas, Billy, and Leon Caldwell, and sister, Wilma Smallwood.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Caldwell of Zebulon, daughter, Lisa (Matthew Gadigian) Arnold of Conyers, son, Johnny (Sandy) Caldwell of Meansville, sister, Frances Orange of Thomaston, grandchildren, Joshua (Dara) Caldwell, Amanda Caldwell, Bryson Woods, Shelby Woods, Brayden Woods, and great-grandchild, Finn Caldwell, and several nieces and nephews.

MR. JOHN REID CARLISLE OF GRIFFIN

John Reid Carlisle died March 30, 2021 in Mendocino County, California. The son of Henrietta Brewer Carlisle and Ernest Franklin Carlisle, Jr., he was born on March 8, 1942 in Griffin, GA.

A lifelong resident of Griffin, he attended Spalding County public schools. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1964, where he had met Carole, the love of his life. He was a letterman and President of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He graduated from University of Georgia School of Law in 1967.

After graduation, he returned to Griffin. He practiced law and served in the Georgia General Assembly from 1972-1978 and again from 1992-1993. After he left the legislature, he was instrumental in the founding the Georgia Civil War Commission to protect battlefields as open spaces.

John was as devoted to his community as he was to his family. He established Plant The Future to beautify Griffin city streets with new trees and to preserve the town he loved. He also founded Honor Our KIA, an organization that pays tribute to the fallen military service members from Spalding County. He developed several residential and commercial real estate projects throughout the county including The Dairy, Griffin’s first gated community. Most recently, he restored the former Coca-Cola bottling facility into retail and office space.

An adventurer at heart, John travelled the world with Carole and his family and they spent a year living in Oxford, England to broaden their daughters’ horizons. Their love of travel led them to share, own and operate Thomas Travel and Classic Adventures. Wherever they travelled, John passionately photographed their adventures. Behind the lens, he was able to see and capture the very best in people.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carole Conniff Carlisle; daughters Flynn Carlisle Livingston and Christine Carlisle Odom (John); grandchildren Carole Reid Livingston, Michael Cole Livingston, John “Jack” Calhoun Odom and Catherine Carlisle Odom; sister Henrietta Carlisle Herrick; sister-in-law Catherine Bramlett Carlisle; nieces, nephews and his very special companions Banjo and Cuba.

MRS. MYRA J. (MCLEOD) THOMASON SASSER

Mrs. Myra J. (McLeod) Thomason Sasser age 61 of Molena Ga., passed away Sunday April 4, 2021 at her residence.

Myra was born January 11, 1960, in Thomaston, to Bobby M. McLeod and the late J. Faye King McLeod Roebuck. She worked as a legal secretary for Mr. Don Snow for 30 plus years. Myra was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of Clarks Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Rick Sasser of Molena, father and mother, Bobby (Margaret) McLeod, mother-in-law, Vi Sasser of Zebulon, daughter, Kellie J. Mrs. Debra Jean Funderburk Whatley age 64 of Thomaston Ga, passed away Thursday April 1, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Whatley was born on March 1, 1957, in Warm Springs, to the late William Funderburk and the late Elizabeth Clay Funderburk. She worked at Upson Regional Medical Center in the food nutrition department and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, James Funderburk.

Survivors include her husband, Andy Whatley of Thomaston, sons, Jason (Jana) Whatley of Thomaston, Scott (Kim) Whatley of Thomaston, sister, Diane (Mike) Rigden of Warm Springs, grandchildren, Logan Gordy, Makayla Ogletree, Brenton Whatley, and dog, Bella.

MR. JAMES FRANKLIN CARROLL

Mr. James Franklin Carroll, 61, of Thomaston, died Thursday, April 1, 2021at the Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital.

Funeral services for Mr. Carroll will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Fletcher-Day Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Smith officiating. 

The family of Mr. Carroll will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Friday, April 2, 2021 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

Mr. Carroll was born in Thomaston on January 4, 1960, a son of the late George Harry and Iris Pauline Traylor Carroll. He was a self-employed plumber and construction worker.

Mr. Carroll is survived by his wife, Melanie Michele Carroll; three daughters, Ashley (Thaddeus) Carroll-McCrary and Evelyn Flynt, both of Thomaston, and Cassie Carroll of Akin, SC; two sons, Shane (Melissa) Parker of Hendersonville, NC, and Jesse (Krystal) Carroll of Griffin; two sisters, Vicki (David) Musselwhite and Paula Madison, both of Thomaston; a brother, Hal Carroll of Thomaston; seventeen grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
