MRS. DORIS JUANITA MCGOWAN

Mrs. Doris Juanita McGowan age 85 of The Rock Ga, died Wednesday August 26, 2020 at Pruitt Health in Griffin Ga.
Mrs. McGowan was born on September 24, 1934 in Upson County, GA, to the late Hansel E. Johnson and the late Lena Mae Musgrove Johnson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Berean Baptist Church in Griffin, GA.  She is preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Judy Campbell.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Iva McGowan, daughter, Sharon McGowan (Allen) Gabehart of Calhoun, GA, son, Terrell (Nancy) McGowan of Bedford, KY, brothers, Johnny (Linda) Johnson of The Rock, GA, Jimmy (Jan) Johnson of The Rock, GA, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be on Friday, August 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  Family will receive friends on Thursday, August 27, 2020 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home

MRS. JUDY DARLENE LOWMAN WHEELER

Mrs. Judy Darlene Lowman Wheeler, age 61, of Thomaston, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Wheeler was born on February 13, 1959, in Hickory, NC, to the late Samuel Lowman and the late Glenda Lowman.  She was a homemaker and a member of Pritchett Memorial Baptist Church.  She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Lisa Wheeler Clay, brother, Steve Lowman, sister, Kim Lowman.
Survivors include her daughters, Wendy (Ryan) Wheeler Halsey of Thomaston, Niki (Bradi) Wheeler of The Rock, sons, Billy (Crystal) Wheeler of Cohutta, GA, Dell (Debbie) Wheeler of Thomaston, brother, Timmy Lowman of Hickory, NC, sisters, Amy Lowman of Hickory, NC, Diane Lowman of Hickory, NC, nine grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

MR. JOHN ROBERT LAWRENCE

Mr. John Robert Lawrence age 66 of Thomaston Ga, died Sunday August 23, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Lawrence was born on May 23, 1954 in Upson County, GA to the late John Will Lawrence and the late Mary Lawrence.  He served his country in the U.S. Army and then went on to retire as a truck driver. He was a member of High Shoals Primitive Baptist Church in Lamar County.  He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Lawrence (Thaddeus Nienajadly) of Fern Park, FL.
Memorial graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from High Shoals Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Lamar County, GA.

ANNE CLEMENTS EDWARDS OF GRIFFIN

Anne Clements Edwards, age 91, of Griffin, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2020 with family by her side. She was born August 5, 1929 in Atlanta, youngest daughter of the late Clifford Paul Clements and Inez Florence Clements. She will be remembered as a committed wife, strong and loving mother, devoted and caring grandmother and trusted friend to many.
Anne was a member of the last graduating class of Atlanta Girls High School in 1947.  Growing up in Atlanta, Anne was gifted musically and enjoyed playing piano.  She was a member of the Girls High Orchestra and was even a bassist with the newly formed Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She then attended Stetson University in Deland, Florida, where she met her future husband.  Following graduation from Stetson with a degree in accounting, Anne married John William (Bill) Edwards in 1954.
Anne and Bill spent the early years of their marriage in Georgia, Texas and Washington D.C., while Bill was serving in the United States Army.  Afterwards, they established their home in Griffin and became active members of First United Methodist Church. Anne was also a member of the Utility Club.  They raised their three children in Griffin, all of whom were guided by Anne’s quiet but strong faith, unwavering love, genuine acceptance and encouragement.
Anne loved spending time with family and friends.  She also had a passion for music, poetry and travel.  Anne enjoyed traveling with Bill and with other family members and special friends. Although they traveled both far and wide, Anne and Bill’s favorite travel destinations were close to home in Highlands, North Carolina and St. Simons Island, Georgia.
Anne was preceded in death by Bill, her husband of almost 64 years, and by her parents and her sister, Florence Clements Moss.
Anne is survived by her three children, Allie Edwards Armistead (Butch) of Zebulon, Laurie Edwards Fisher (Jay) of Sewanee, TN, and John W. Edwards, Jr. of Zebulon; eleven grandchildren, Walker Armistead (Sydney), Courtney Armistead, Dana Armistead, Mia Armistead, Jett Fisher (Caroline), Elliott Fisher, John Fisher, Henry Fisher, Ashley Edwards, Will Edwards (Sarah), and Mary Grace Edwards; three great-grandchildren, Blythe and Walker Armistead and Lulie Fisher; brother and sister-in-law Joe and Pat Edwards of Barnesville; nieces and nephews Margie Moss Hunnicutt (Lynn), Jean Moss Nielsen (Wayne), Jim Edwards (Laura) and Chris Edwards (Michelle) and several great nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all.
The family wishes to thank Kathy Rawls, our special friend and caregiver, the staff of The Woods Assisted Living, and the nurses and staff of Brightmoor Hospice for their able and loving care.

MRS. FRANCES PAULETTE COUCH

Mrs. Frances Paulette Couch, age 76, died Friday August 21, 2020 at Riverside Health and Rehab.
Mrs. Couch was born on March 29, 1944 in Pike County, Georgia, to the late Paul Theopolis Killingsworth and the late Frances Lois Stewart Killingsworth.  She retired from the William Carter Company.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bobby Lee Couch, brothers, Donald Webb, Jerry Lee Killingsworth, and Gary Killingsworth.
Survivors include, sons, Jerry Glynn Nelson of Thomaston, Darren Nelson of Thomaston, Hiram Edward "Eddie" Couch of Reynolds, brother, Tony Killingsworth of Foley AL, sister, Rose Mari Bailey of Thomaston, and sister in law, Carol Killingsworth of Manchester.

MR. THOMAS KING OF ZEBULON

Mr. Thomas “Tom” Wayland King, aged 76, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away August 21, 2020, at Well Star Spalding Regional Hospital. Tom currently lived in Zebulon and was born and grew up in Chattanooga, TN.  He was the son of the late Garland Fisher King and Hazel Crawford King.
He lived in Riverdale and Jonesboro before moving to Pike County.  Tom worked for Delta Airlines for 36 years before retiring. While living in Clayton County, he coached recreational soccer for many years through which he touched and shaped the lives of many of his players. He enjoyed gardening and received much fulfillment from seeing the joy that others had by the gifting of his vegetables. 
Tom was very involved in his children's lives whether in their academic endeavors or their extracurricular activities.  He volunteered at school to mentor and assist those students who were struggling with their curriculum.  
Tom was also active in his local church.  Upon first moving to Pike County, he and Glynda were members of New Hope Baptist Church. While a member of New Hope, Tom would often sing hymns of inspiration.  After moving their membership to Meansville Baptist Church, Tom continued to inspire others through his songs and was also an active member of the choir. 
He and Glynda also supported nonprofit organizations and missions such as the Backpack Mission program for children in the Appalachian Mountains, the Shoe Box mission program at Christmas for children around the world, and many organizations to research and support families fighting pediatric cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years: Glynda King; children: Schon Wood of Macon and Dr. Todd King and wife Kathy of Port St. Lucie, FL; grandchildren: Soren Wood and wife Laurel based at Ft. Bliss in El Paso, TX,  Alanna Wood of Macon, Caeden King and Zy King both of Port St. Lucie.
A memorial service will be held August 25, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Meansville Baptist Church with Pastor John Blackmon officiating.

RETIRED THOMASTON POLICE CAPTAIN WAYNE COLLINS

Mr. Olif Wayne Collins, age 75, of Thomaston, GA, died Monday, August 17, 2020, at Eternal Hope Hospice.
Mr. Collins was born on June 24, 1945, in Upson County to the late Olif Clayton Collins and the late Annie Kate Jackson Collins.  He served his country in the United States Army, he then worked for the Thomaston Police Department were he retired as a Captain after 32 and a half years.  He was a member of Rock Springs Church.  He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include, his wife, Allene Kaylor Collins, daughters, Kayla Lane Collins, Dana Lea Collins, stepsons, Chris (Stephanie) Bradley, Kerry Bradley, brother, Donald (Scarlett) Collins, sister, Geraldine Taunton, grandchildren, Caleb Reid Collins, Savannah Paige Spillars, Waylin Robert Wright, step grandchildren, Brittany (Nick) McDaniel, Janice Nicholson, and McKinley Bradley.

Mr. Robert Porter Lopez, age 86, of Thomaston, GA, died on Saturday, August 15, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Lopez was born on January 19, 1934, in Tampa, FL, to the late Celestino Lopez and the late Florence Parker Almeda. He retired from Western Union as a regional manager after 35 years of service, and was a member of Faithful Christian Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Annette Hagood.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Deborah Lopez of Thomaston, daughters, Melody (Robert Morissette) Lopez of Tampa, FL, Jenny (Tony) Gubbels of Thomaston, sons, Steven (Jill) Lopez of Tampa, FL, Keith (Vicki) of Macon, sisters, Deanna (Jerry) Tetuck of Tampa, FL, Arlene Goforth of Fountain Inn, SC, grandchildren, Steve Lopez II, Lauren Lopez, Leah Mayo, Amy Logan, Tyler Lopez, Christine Lopez/Rollins, Graham Lopez, Travis Lopez, and Chevy Lopez, great-grandchildren, Jake Lopez, Ty Lopez, Dylan Lopez, Rylee Sue Fiol, Aleah Fiol, Jackson Fiol, Hunter Rollins, Emily Rollins, TJ Forehand, and Nova Forehand.

Mrs. Hazel Beatrice Huguley, age 91, died Sunday, August 16, 2020 at Riverside Nursing Home.
Mrs. Huguley was born on October 4, 1928, in Upson County, GA, to the late Grady Smith and the late Lonie Rogers Smith.  She retired from the US Post Office after 30 years, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Zack M. Huguley, three brothers, and two sisters.
Survivors include her daughters, Gwen (Gary) Sharpe, Jackie (George) Ruff, grandchildren, Chris (Melissa) Bedford, Adam (Angel) Bedford, Steve (Mary) Ruff, and three great-grandchildren.

MS. MARY JONES

Ms. Mary Jones, 84, of Thomaston and formerly of Molena, died Tuesday,
August 11, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
Mary was born May 11, 1936 in Concord, GA., to the late James Glover Jones
and the late Mary Smith Jones.  She is also preceded in death by a brother,
James Leroy Jones of McDonough, GA, and a sister, Martha Jones Kent Gordy of
Thomaston.
She is survived by two brothers, Billy P. (Janice) Jones of Thomaston and
William Larry (Evelyn) Jones of Molena.  Several nieces and nephews also
survive.
Due to COVID 19 the family will have a private burial service.

Mr. James Edward Franklin age 70 of Thomaston Ga, died Monday August 10, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Franklin was born on June 18, 1950, in Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, to the late George Edward Franklin, and the late Francis Register Franklin.  He worked as a trucking dispatcher for Premier Trucking.  He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Susan Presley Franklin, brother, Bill Starr, sisters, Dorothy Starr, and Sandy Eberline
Survivors include his adopted parents Bill and Harriett Starr, daughter, Sharri (Liam) Rimmer-Henson of Thomaston, brothers, Jim (Nancy) Starr of Haddock, GA, Charles (Sandi) Starr of Sunnyside, GA, Jeff Franklin of Forest Park, GA, Ben (Hawk) Franklin of Atlanta, GA, sister, Peggy (Kevin) Malloy of Wilson, NC, grandchildren, Courtney (Matt) Simons, Trey Henson, Mason Henson, Caitlyn Rimmer-Henson, Fern Franklin, great-grandchildren, Ashton Simons, Raegan Simons.

Mr. William Garnet "Buster" Wheeler age 76 of Meansville Ga, died Monday August 10, 2020 at his residence.
Mr. Wheeler was born on September 4, 1943 in Griffin Ga, to the late Thomas J. Wheeler and the late Oma Pierce Wheeler. He worked for Thomaston Mills as a Fixer for many years. Mr. Wheeler was a member of Mud Bridge Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his son Tommy J. Wheeler and brothers Thaddus Wheeler & Larry Wheeler.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Geraldine Wheeler of Meansville Ga, daughters Ms. Patsy Michelle (Chris Dunnahoo) Wheeler of Meansville Ga., Ms. Naomi "Gigit" Wheeler of Thomaston Ga, son Mr. Billy Jeff (Peggy) Wheeler of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Debra Adams of Thomaston Ga, sister in law Mrs. Jean Wheeler of Meansville Ga., 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Martha Louise Wright age 79 of Thomaston Ga, died Sunday August 9, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Wright was born on October 17, 1940, in Dover, New Hampshire, to the late Harry Augustus Davis and the late Echo Violet Noyce Davis.  She worked as a nurse and was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.  She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, David Earl Wright.
Survivors include her daughters, Beverly Dawn (David) Clark of Manchester, Candee Diane (Tom) Schreiner of Thomaston, son, David Earl (Stephanie) Wright II of Locust Grove, brother, Donald Lawrence Davis of Dover, New Hampshire, sister, Billie Cote of Summerworth, New Hampshire, 14 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Danny Ray Swails age 30 of Griffin Ga, passed away Friday August 7, 2020.
Danny was born on July 31, 1990 in Thomaston Ga, to Kevin Wayne Swails Sr. and Tammy Marie Webb Colley. He was an avid reader, loved the outdoors and loved spending time with his son Aiden.
Survivors include his mother Tammy (Martin) Colley, father Kevin (Megan) Swails Sr., son Aiden Hester, brother Kevin (Heather) Swails Jr, step sister Harley Blankenship, step brothers Caden Blankenship & Cory Colley.

Mr. Mitchell Allen Riggins age 70 of Molena Ga, died Saturday August 8, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Riggins was born on November 23, 1949 in Zebulon Ga, to the late J. Aster Riggins and the late Marie Matthews Riggins. He owned and operated Riggins Concrete Construction for many years. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother Danny Riggins.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Nancy Riggins of Molena Ga, daughter Mrs. Sadie (Corey) Simmons of Easley South Carolina, son Mr. Ryan (Jessica) Riggins of Thomaston Ga, brother Mr. David (Angie) Riggins of Thomaston Ga, grandchild Tybee Marie Riggins.

MR. FREDRICK GARY JONES SR.

Mr. Fredrick Gary Jones Sr. age 77 of Wetumpka Al, formerly of Barnesville Ga, died Tuesday August 4, 2020 at Elmore County Hospital.

Mr. Jones was born on July 22, 1943 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Johnny D. Jones and the late Lillian Hooper Jones. He worked in Maintenance for many years. Mr. Jones served his country in the U.S. Navy. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brothers Leon Jones, John W. Jones, Robert Jones, Arthur Eugene Jones, and sister Glenda Amerson.

Survivors include his daughters Garnett (Darrell) Wilson of Tallapoosa Ga, Teresa Jones of Temple Ga, sons Fredrick Gary (Susan) Jones Jr. of Wetumpka Al, Lamar (Shelly) Jones of Bellchase La, sister Pat Cleveland of Thomaston Ga, many grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

MR. MARION H. MCCARTY

Mr. Marion H. McCarty, 91 of Thomaston, GA died August 7, 2020, at his residence.

Funeral services will be Sunday, August 9, 2020, at 2:00 PM in Southview Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at Coggins Funeral Home.

He was born April 20, 1929, in Ideal, GA to the late Elijah Lewis and Ruby Mae Harden McCarty. Mr. McCarty has lived most of his life in Thomaston where he was the owner and operator of his family-owned business McCarty Superette for 25 years. He was a member of Thomaston First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughters, Cynthia McCarty and Donna McCarty, and a brother, Lewis McCarty.

Survivors include his daughter, LeAnn Williford and her husband Larry of Buford, GA, sons, Ken McCarty and his wife Martha Anne of Thomaston and Brian McCarty and his wife Cami of Dawsonville, GA, grandchildren, Renee McCarty, Christy Fitzwater, Evan McCarty, and Kaylee McCarty and three great-grandchildren.

MR. ROBERT THOMAS KERSEY JR.

Robert Thomas Kersey Jr., age 20, of Thomaston, GA, died Wednesday August 5, 2020, at his residence.

Robert was born December 18, 1999, in Thomaston, GA, to Robert Thomas Kersey Sr., and Natasha Barfield. He worked at Zoe Pediatrics as a janitor. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alton and Crystal Barfield, and paternal grandparents.

Survivors include his parents, Robert Kersey Sr. and Natasha Barfield; fiance, Destini Moore; sister, Paige McChargue; and niece, Isabella Carter.

Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

MR. WILLIAM DALE TINDLE

Mr. William Dale Tindle age 63 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday July 29, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Tindle was born on July 26, 1957, in Cincinnati , Ohio, to the late William Granville Tindle, and the late Martha Jean Melton Tindle. He worked as the Parts Manager at Thomaston Ford. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Debbie Peaden.

Survivors include his son, Grant (Alicia Dawson) Tindle, brother Ronnie Tindle, grandchildren, Maycie Grace Tindle, and Liam Bryce Tindle.

Memorial services will held on Saturday, August 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

MRS. MARY "JEAN" ROBERTS GASKINS

Mrs. Mary "Jean" Roberts Gaskins age 89 of Thomaston, died Sunday, August 2, 2020 at her home; 614 Peachtree Drive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Gaskins will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Baptist Church of Thomaston. The Reverend Bob Wilson and the Reverend Bill Barber will officiate. Burial will follow in South View Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Gaskins will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until the funeral hour.

Mrs. Gaskins was born in Good Hope (Walton County), Georgia on January 17, 1931 to the late William Peyton Roberts and the late Erma Ester Knight Roberts. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Kenneth Donald Gaskins, one sister, Louise R. Thompson, four brothers, J.W. Roberts, John L. Roberts, Thomas Roberts and Charles D. Roberts.

She was a graduate of Monroe High School. Following graduation, she went on to attend secretarial school in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Gaskins and her husband were charter members of Trinity Baptist Church of Thomaston, where she served as the Chairperson of the Compassion Committee and on the Flower and Beautification Committee. She was a member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club where she served as President from 1969-1971. Mrs. Gaskins also served on the Hospital Auxiliary Board as a Pink Lady. In addition, she served on the Thomaston-Upson Arbor Board. Mrs. Gaskins worked as a bookkeeper at Paulk's Pharmacy of Thomaston where she and her husband, Don, owned and operated the business together for over 30 years.

Mrs. Gaskins is survived by two sons, Ken (Melody) Gaskins, and Mark (Martha) Gaskins, both of Thomaston. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Maggie Gaskins, of Covington, Lauren (Jonathan) Hall, of Thomaston, Matthew Gaskins (Mary Ashby Ward), of Atlanta, and Katelyn Gaskins (Logan Kent), of Pensacola, Florida and several nieces and nephews.

MRS. HELEN DOWNS CROMER

Mrs. Helen Downs Cromer, 82, of Thomaston, died Saturday, August 1, in Wildwood, Florida. Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Cromer will be held on Saturday, August 8, at 11:00 AM in South View Cemetery.

MRS. MARY GAIL ALLEN

Mrs. Mary Gail Allen, age 73, of Thomaston, GA, died on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Allen was born on December 1, 1946 in Thomaston, GA, to the late Hiram Wesley Jackson and the late Jewel Teal Jackson. She worked as an insurance agent and was a member of Outreach Full Gospel. She is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Tully Allen and Lewis Moore, brothers, Stanley and Larry Jackson.

Survivors include her sons, Johnny (Betty Jane) Allen, Jimmy (Susan) Allen both of Thomaston, brothers, Terrell (Jane) Jackson of Thomaston, John McNulty of New Orleans, Allen Cox of Barnesville, sisters, Karen Thompson of Macon, Sharon (Joe) Harrel of Barnesville, Ann Lucas of Marietta, four grandchildren, Macie Allen, Andrea Blackstock, Robbie Blount and Angel Howard, seven great-grandchildren.

It was Mrs. Allen's wish to be cremated, the family will hold a memorial service at a later date.

MR. WILLIAM DOUGLAS ALLEN JR.

Mr. William Douglas Allen, Jr., 73, of Meansville GA,, died Thursday, July 30, at his residence. Funeral services for Mr. Allen have been postponed.

Mr. Allen was born in Pike County, GA, on December 5, 1946, to Doris Bankston Allen and the late William Douglas Allen, Sr. He received a BS degree in elementary education from Georgia Southwestern, and taught second, third, and fifth grades at Rock Hill School. He later worked for and retired from Best Manufacturing Company in Griffin, GA. Mr. Allen was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Barnesville where he was a part of the Stephen Ministry, and he was also a Gideon.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Janice Storey Allen of Meansville; a daughter, Stacey (Peter) Paulk of Meansville; a son, Clinton Douglas (Kimberly) Allen of Griffin; his mother, Doris Bankston Allen of Thomaston; three sisters: Anne (Michael) Lavoie of Atlanta; Sue (Ron) Corley of McDonough; and Debbie (Bill) Wheeless of Thomaston; one brother, Tommy (Brenda) Allen of Thomaston; and one grandchild, Easton Garrett Burton of Meansville.
