Barbara Arvelia Murphy Landers


Mrs. Barbara Arvelia Murphy Landers, age 89, of Zebulon, passed away February 26, 2024, at Sacred Journey Hospice in McDonough.  

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, at 2 p.m., in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin.  Friends may visit the family beginning 45 minutes prior to the service at graveside.

Donna L. Hammond

Mrs. Donna L. Hammond, 72 of Thomaston, GA died on February 26, 2024, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Her funeral services will be on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. The interment will be in Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Hammond was born November 12, 1951, in Atlanta to the late Curtis and Lucille Mayhew Lassiter. Mrs. Hammond has lived most of her life in Thomaston where she was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and was employed with Upson Regional Medical Center in Human Resources for 33 years and then with Riverside Nursing Home Human Resources for 10 years. She will always be remembered for the love she gave to her family, friends, and especially her grandson, Walker.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Kelly Hammond, her brother, Charlie Mayhew, and a sister, Linda Sheppard.

Survivors her husband, Scotty Hammond of Thomaston, son, Brian Hammond of Jasper, GA, mother-in-law, Romie Hammond of Thomaston, brother, Dennis Presley of Newnan and sister, Brenda Watson of TX, and her grandson, Walker Hammond of Jasper, GA.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 29, 2024, from 12:30 PM til 2:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

Sherrie M. Canup


Ms. Sherrie M. Canup, age 77, of Thomaston died Monday, February 26, 2024, at her residence.

Ms Canup was born December 18, 1946, in Thomaston to the late J. B. Canup and Lucille Parham Canup. Ms. Canup was a retired teacher for Griffin/ Spalding county schools.

She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Beverly Ard. Survivors are her sister, Judy (Donald) Gilbert; nieces, Lisa Rooker, Jennifer Ridings, and Alisha Delune; and nephew, Chad Gilbert. 

Private services will be held at a later date by Coggins Funeral Home.

Vance Brooks

Mr. Vance Brooks, age 73, of Thomaston, died Thursday, February 22, 2024, at his residence.  

Mr. Brooks was born on January 16, 1951, in Thomaston, Georgia to the late William Beecher Brooks, and to the late Lucile Thompson Brooks.  He worked many years with William Carter Company, then a truck driver for Pepsi Co. worked briefly for Criterion Company in Thomaston, and then he retired from GDOT.  He was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Lenora Daniels Brooks, brothers, Glenn Brooks, Gene Brooks, and sister, Doris McCarty.

 

Survivors include his daughter, April (Daniel) Chastain of Thomaston, stepdaughter, Jessica (Shannon) Holliday of Carollton, stepson, Bill (Erin) McDowell of Michigan, sister, Carol (Mike) Compton of Thomaston, grandchildren, Lila Chastain, Jace Chastain, and Liam McDowell.

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at New Harmony Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.  

Steve Donald Price

Mr. Steve Donald Price, age 76, of Woodland, died Friday, February 23, 2024, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Price was born on September 11, 1947, to the late William Bob Price Sr. and the late Earnestine Lynch Price.  He attended Georgia Southwestern College and served his country in the U.S. Army.  He was also machine mechanic at the William Carter Company and member of Trinity Baptist Church in Manchester GA. Mr. Steve would travel to Mexico and the Dominican Republic, to teach others how to repair the manufacturing machines. He loved the outdoors especially the Flint River.  He was a loving, kind, peaceful man who loved his kids and his grandchildren, and enjoyed watching Gunsmoke his favorite show.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his, brother, Bobby Price.

Survivors include his wife of nearly fifty years, Nancy Carol Bush Price of Woodland, daughters, Melisa (Reggie) Rhodes, Cheryl Lynn Collie, son, Brett (Michelle) Price, grandchildren, Lydia Johnson, Taylor Collie, Grayson (Yerim) Johnson, Tyson Cope, Ella Cope, Madison Childree, McKenzie Price, Madelyn Price.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Meriwether Memory Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Monday, February 26, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.  

Mary Nancy Herndon

Mary Nancy Herndon, 79, of Barnesville passed away Friday, February 23, 2024, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin.

A Lamar County native, Nancy was the daughter of the late William “Jodie” and Mary Laurie Waller. Nancy was the widow of Jerry Herndon and Bobby Bohannon. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Williamson.

 

While taking care of Bobby’s mother in the mid-70s, Nancy found her niche in life, caring for the sick. She attended Griffin Vocational Technical School and became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1977. While working full-time as an LPN at the Spalding Regional Hospital, Nancy was a full-time student in the nursing program at Gordon College graduating magna cum laude in 1980. She held several positions during her working career at Spalding Regional Hospital, Heritage Inn, and the State Department of Corrections. Following the death of her daughter, Jessica Bohannon Dowdy, Nancy became the caregiver for her special needs grandson, Kyle, and wrapped her life around him. She never spent a day or night without Kyle near her until she entered the hospital on February 10th of this year.

 

In addition to her grandson, Kyle, survivors include her son, George (Adrienne) Williams; daughter, Laura Bohannon; grandchildren, Jeremy Heath, Kelly Griffin, Ashley (Hunter) Reaves, Kasey Breedlove, Sgt. Maj. Phillip Michael (Tansey) Breedlove and Nicole Huckaby; great-grandchildren, Hayden, David, Nicolae, Tonio, Christian, and Addison; beloved sister, Dianne McKinley; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Rachel Wood O’Steen, and brother, Ronny Joe Waller.

 

Nancy’s family will be gathering at her home and receive friends Sunday, February 25, 2024, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home in Zebulon. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 PM at the Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville with Pastor Chris Pitts officiating.

 

Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made to the Gideons International for Bibles in memory of Nancy so that others around the world may come to know Jesus, our Lord and Savior.

Jerry Dale Roland

Mr. Jerry Dale Roland, age 76, of Griffin, passed away February 24, 2024, at his home.  He grew up in Bay, Arkansas, son of the late Carl and Flossie Roland.  Jerry served three years in the United States Army as a Sergeant. For much of that time he was stationed in Germany.  He was an avid Razorback fan and a self-taught tennis player.  He played for years with Stewart, Jim, and Mike.  The four were a team and nearly unbeatable.  Jerry enjoyed vegetable gardening.  He was an Agent for American General Insurance Company for 25 years before retiring and was presently employed with Liberty Bankers.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Tom and Kenneth and a sister Betty. 

 

He is survived by his wife of 42 years: Glenda Roland; daughters:  Jodie Eaves of Concord and Sara Roland of Griffin. Jerry was PawPaw to seven grandchildren: Macie (Josh), Madison, Makayla, Micah, Maya, Maleia, and Corinne; four-great-grandchildren:  Brooks, Hendrix, Rahkim, and Emersyn; his brother: Wayne Roland; and several nieces and nephews.  

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at 12:00 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with his nephew, Pastor Timothy Roland officiating.

Hugh Richard Cobb

Mr. Hugh Richard Cobb, age 91, of Griffin, passed away February 19, 2024.  Richard was born in Atlanta, son of the late Frank and Alma Cobb. He worked for the US Postal Service for 30+ years, retiring as a mail carrier.  Richard was a cut-up, never met a stranger, an excellent dancer, and unbeatable when playing pool. He loved sports and was an avid Alabama Football and Atlanta Braves fan. He was a member of the Griffin Moose Lodge #1503 and the Columbus VFW Post #665.  

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Cobb, daughter, Vicki (Bobby) Evans.

 

He is survived by his wife:  Eloise Cobb; children:  Edward Collum, Malinda (Jimmy) Mathis, Tracy Tidwell, Kathy (Al) Furman, Vickie (Sam) Kennison, and Ronnie Phillips; grandchildren: Christopher (Amanda) Cobb, Cameron Cobb, Chris Mathis, Edward (Catherine) Collum, Erin (Eric) Bryant, Tara (Michael) McMahon, Chris Fain, Allison Stebe and Jesse Phillips; and several great-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.  

Elbert “Bert” H. Wood

Mr. Elbert “Bert” H. Wood, age 83, of Griffin, passed away February 20, 2024, at his home.  He grew up in Sandersville, son of the late Johnny Anderson Wood and Florence Beckum Wood. Bert worked at Dundee Industries in Griffin for over 25 years before retiring.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting, but his favorite hobby was working in his garden growing vegetables.  He was a long-time member of Berean Baptist Church in Griffin.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Curtis Wood, Gladys Larrimore, Orita Hattaway, Odell Wood and John Wood.

 

He is survived by his beloved wife of 37: Lorraine C. Wood; children and their spouses: JoAnn Wilson, Tony and Cathy Payne, and Jerry and Karen Payne; grandchildren and their spouses: Sabrina and Randy Hayes, Travis and Rebecca Morgan, Jennifer and Reggie Corley, Amy and Rod Garland, Clare Elizabeth, Emily and Ethan Crowley, Jordan Payne and Olivia Payne; sister: Evie Bowker; 17 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

 

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the funeral home. Moody-Daniel Funeral Home, 10170 US Hwy. 19, Zebulon, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Margaret Hester Doan Jones

Mrs. Margaret Hester Doan Jones, age 87, of Meansville, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, at her home.  She was born in Ontario, Canada, the daughter of the late Arthur Leonard Doan, Sr., and Catherine Grace Shannon Doan. Hester grew up in Lewiston, NY, near Niagara Falls, where she met her husband, Ed Jones.  After they were married, she became a military wife for 22 years, moving her family to Army bases in the United States and Europe, finally settling in Zebulon in 1971. Hester was always active in her church and community. She was a member of Zebulon First Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She always showed the love of Christ by praying sweet, genuine prayers for her family and anyone in need.   

Hester worked at City Hall in Zebulon and City Pharmacy in Zebulon for many years. When her daughter was young, she was active in the Girl Scouts and was a scout leader. She loved to paint and became accomplished, with several paintings hanging in family members’ homes.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Douglas Edward “Ed” Jones, Sr., and her sister, Kathryn Scoville.

 

She is survived by her children:  Patti Maxedon (Ben), Doug Jones, and Leland Jones (Gandy); grandchildren: Kris Pope (Kendra), Shannon Turner (Brian), Carlos Maxedon (Zory), Javier Maxedon, Rafael Maxedon, Cisco Maxedon, Tatum Jones, Bayly Jones, Tasha Creamer (Ricci), Michelle Jones, Brittany Agnew (Jesse), David Romero, Maria Jones, Leila Jones; 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

 

A Celebration of Life for Hester will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the fellowship hall at Zebulon First Baptist Church, 15922 Concord Street.  A graveside service will immediately follow at Eastview Cemetery in Zebulon. Pastor Matt Hinesley will officiate.

Diane Lynn Espy

Diane Lynn Espy, of Powder Springs, GA, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 19, 2024, at the age of 74, after a short battle with cancer.  She was born in Cleveland, OH on March 12, 1949, to the late Ernest and Helen Farmer.  

Diane loved Jesus and was a member of Macland Baptist Church.  She had a long career with US Foods and retired after 35 plus years of service.  Her passion for her job showed in the relationships with her customers, which turned into friendships.  Diane was known for her delicious cooking and her giving heart.  She was known to help anyone in need, especially kids. She has been known to call a school and pay for kids to have lunches, that otherwise wouldn’t eat. 

 

Diane held her friends close to her heart, which included a small, close-knit group in which she enjoyed going on cruises, dancing, laughing, dinner dates and just having fun together.  One of her greatest friends for over 40 years, was Kim Yonek, who accompanied Diane on many of these great life adventures. Diane enjoyed life immensely and took advantage of the time and friendships she made.  Everyone who met her loved her.  While at Brightmoor Assisted Living, she made another best friend, Paris Scott, and enjoyed spending time hanging out with her, including much good nature teasing and trading barbs.    

 

Diane’s most prized title was Maw-Maw.  She was the proudest grandmother and could talk endlessly about her grandchildren. Before she became sick, she loved taking her grandchildren shopping and spoiling them.  If they had a special event, she made sure to be there to celebrate, no matter the distance.  Each conversation always included Diane asking about her grandchildren and grandpuppies. While at Brightmoor, Diane especially enjoyed the surprise visit from her grandpuppy, Sully. 

 

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kelly (Lee) Huffman of Williamson, GA; Tommy Tyler Jr. of Fort Smith, AR; Tammi Sullenberger of Newnan, GA; Jeff (Elena) Espy of Buford; Gina (Jeff) Hanson of Lawrenceville; grandchildren: Timothy Murphy, Zachary Murphy, Emma Murphy, Abigail Murphy, Camden Huffman and Easton Huffman; great-granddaughter, Scarlette Murphy; brother, Gary Farmer. 

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her baby sister, love of her life and husband, David Espy and son-in-law, Brent Sullenberger.

William Gerald “Jerry” Brock

Mr. William Gerald “Jerry” Brock, age 68, of Macon, passed away February 19, 2024, at his home.  He grew up in Macon, son of the late William “Billy” Brock and Edna Mae Hall Brock. Jerry worked as a truck driver for over 30 years. He loved to fish, laugh, and ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph “Jody” Robert Harbuck.

 

He is survived by his long-time girlfriend: Vickie Greenway; sons: Ricky Brock and Corey Brock; grandchildren: Madyson, Kayden, Reagan and Auora Brock;

 

sister and brother-in-law: Mary and Robert Stevens; brothers and sisters-in-law: Richard and Tera Brock and Tommy and Sam Brock; Jimmy and Kathy Brock and several other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 1 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Geoffrey Zimbelman officiating.

 

Friends may visit the family 30 minutes prior to the service and again after the service at the funeral home.

Barbara Payne Perkins

Mrs. Barbara Payne Perkins, age 83, of Zebulon, formerly of Griffin, passed away February 18, 2024.  Mrs. Perkins grew up in the Kincaid Community of Griffin, daughter of the late Albert V. Payne and Geneva Faye Smith Payne. She graduated from Griffin High School in 1958 and then went to cosmetology school. She worked as a secretary for RBM Motors in Griffin for 25 years and then as a Sales Associate at Atlanta Tees in Griffin where she retired.  

As a child, Mrs. Perkins was very athletic and loved sports. At the time, females did not play on teams, so as an adult in the 1970s, she was instrumental in creating the first women’s softball league and later in the 80s, she started and coached the first girls’ softball team in Griffin. She also coached girls’ basketball.  She excelled at golf and played both the accordion and guitar.  Mrs. Perkins enjoyed traveling, photography, greyhound racing, riding on country roads, and loved bingo.  She was an excellent cook and would often drive long distances seeking out restaurants with good food. She was a member of Zebulon First Baptist Church.  

 

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jackie H. Perkins.

 

She is survived by her children: Warren H. Perkins of Griffin and Angela Atkins (Steve) of Tacoma, WA; grandchildren: Amy Lawrence (Corey), Melissa Bunn, and Jordan Atkins; great-grandchildren: Graycen, Allie, Carleigh and Camden; sister: Brenda P. Garner of Griffin; and several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Griffin.

 

Friends may visit the family on Friday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

Jesse M. Coogler

Mr. Jesse Maude Coogler, age 83, of Thomaston GA, died Monday, February 19, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Coogler was born on September 23, 1940, in Telfair County Ga, to the late Neal Coogler and the late Veda Calhoun Coogler. He served the Thomaston Fire Department starting in 1973. He served as Chief from 1992 up to his retirement in 2003. Mr. Coogler was a member of Clark's Chapel Baptist Church and The Morning Star Lodge No. 27 F.&A.M. He was also an Al Sihah Shriner. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his siblings Billy Coogler & Diane Coogler.

 

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Marsha Coogler of Thomaston; sons, Mr. Craig Coogler and Mr. Jeff Coogler both of Thomaston; grandson, Dillon Coogler; and great-grandson, Riley Coogler; special grandchildren, Jonathan, Christopher, Addison, Tyler, Miley, Dawson, Kaylee. 

 

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Southview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Thursday, February 22, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

Ronald “Ronnie” Lawrence Cochran

Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Lawrence Cochran, age 73, of Woodbury, passed away February 18, 2024.  Ronnie was born in Manchester, son of the late Ernest Franklin Cochran and Velma Mae Camp Cochran.  Ronnie was an avid woodworker and enjoyed golfing, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul Cochran and Irvin Carlyle.

 

He is survived by his wife:  Paulette Cochran; sons:  Chris Cochran (Shannon) of Thomaston, Charles Cochran (Dawn) of SC and Kevin Cochran of Yatesville; grandchildren: Chelsy Stevens, Connor Stevens (Sandy), Zack Rice, and Carter Cochran; great-grandson on the way: Nikolas Stevens; and his beloved dog BoBo.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Thomaston Hospice, 512 S. Center Street, Thomaston, GA 30286, in memory of Ronnie.

 

It was Ronnie’s wish to be cremated and no services are planned at this time.

Katrina Dale “Fatty” Hubbard

Katrina Dale “Fatty” Hubbard, age 49, of Griffin, passed away February 15, 2024, at Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Fatty grew up in Griffin and attended Spalding County Schools. In her younger years, she loved roller skating and hanging out downtown. She had the biggest smile and dimples. Fatty was happy all the time, would help anyone in need and give them everything she had. She worked as a CNA at Victoria Manor and at the Christian Women’s Center Thrift Store, both in Griffin.

 

She was preceded in death by her sister, Brenda Gayle “Boney” Hubbard, and her step-father, Emmitt “Shorty” Yeoman.

 

She is survived by her children: Ashley Camp (David) and Justin Winters; great-grandchildren: Paisleigh, Preston, and Leon; mother: Julie Evelyn Yeoman; father:  Ricky Aaron Hubbard; sister and brother: Tamera “Kricket” Bradley (Jason) and William Aaron “Chop” Hubbard; nephews and Nieces: Matt, Austin, Anna, Brooklyn, Scottlyn, and Aidyn; aunts and an uncle: Peggy, Martha, Helen, Faye and Buddy; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.  Burial will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens.

Linda Elaine Wilson Rogers

Mrs. Linda Elaine Wilson Rogers age 77 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday February 17, 2024 at Harborview Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Rogers was born on October 12, 1946 in Zebulon, Georgia to the late George Edward Wilson and the late Elvin Trawick Wilson. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years and was a member of Meansville Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Jimmie Jerone Rogers Sr., and son Jimmie Jerone Rogers Jr.

 

Survivors include her daughters Robin (Steve) Artinger of Thomaston Ga, Dixie (Scott) Garner of Hollonville Ga., sister Bobbie Killingsworth of Meansville Ga, grandchildren Kristi Booker, Dakota Teal, Cheyenne Buchanan, Brandon Witt, 10 great grandchildren.

Audrey Dover Blackmon

Mrs. Audrey Dover Blackmon age 91 of McDonough Ga, died Saturday February 17, 2024 at Eternal Hope Hospice. 

Mrs. Blackmon was born on January 3, 1933 in Eatonton Ga, to the late Guy Dover and the late Winnie Callahan Dover. She was a homemaker and of the Pentecostal faith. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her siblings Wayne Dover, Jack Dover, Mildred Tingle. Jean Ponder, Helen Ivie, grandchild Jarrod Trice.

 

Survivors include her husband Mr. Tommy L. Blackmon of McDonough Ga., daughters Mrs. Beverly Trice of McDonough Ga, Mrs. Angie (Doug) Starr of Jackson Ga, Mrs. Lynne (Alan) Parks of McDonough Ga, 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren.

Mike Wayne Stewart

Mr. Mike Wayne Stewart, age 60, of Thomaston, died Sunday, February 18, 2024, at his residence.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday afternoon from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM..

 

Mr. Stewart was born in Thomaston on January 26, 1964, to the late Wayne Edward Stewart and the late Barbara Edmondson Stewart.  He was a 1983 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and a 1987 graduate of Georgia Southern University.  He was also a graduate of the University of Georgia Banking School.  Mr. Stewart was employed for 25 years with AgSouth Farm Credit. He enjoyed playing guitar, racing go carts, and watching Nascar races.  His passion was coaching softball for more than 30 years.

 

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife, Kim Tyson Stewart; three daughters: Jessica Ashley Stewart of Thomaston; Leah (Brandon) Ake of Brookhaven, and Mary (Nathan) Strickland of Pine Mountain; two brothers: Jeb (Duree) Stewart of Blairsville and Russ (Stephanie) Stewart of Fortson; and four grandchildren: Trace, Trent, and Tripp Peaden and Maverick Strickland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 5962 Zebulon Road, PMB 359, Macon, GA  31210.

Sidney "Sid" Charles Smith Sr

Sidney "Sid" Charles Smith Sr. of Meansville, GA was born December 17, 1958, in Sanford, FL to Stanley Sr. and Mildred Smith. He was the second oldest of four children, Stanley Jr. (McDonough, GA) Randy (Ft. Worth, TX) and Jeanne (deceased) of Orlando, FL.

He leaves behind his wife, Denise and his only son, Sidney Jr. 

Sid fought a brief but devasting battle with esophageal cancer. He was a truck driver employed by Estes Express Lines, Ellenwood, GA for almost 20 years.  If Sid was not trucking, you could find him at Morgan Dairy Golf Course in Orchard Hill, GA. He left this world on February 2, 2024, for the big golf course in Heaven.

A Celebration of Life service will be held March 30, 2024, at 6:00pm at Morgan Dairy Golf Course, 525 Morgan Dairy Road, Griffin GA 30224.

Patricia Helms McClain Andrews

Mrs. Patricia Helms McClain Andrews age 82 of Lagrange Ga, died Thursday February 15, 2024 at West Georgia Hospice in Lagrange. 

 

Mrs. Andrews was born on January 5, 1942 in Molena Ga, to the late Herman Helms and the late Bertha Gibson Helms. She worked in the carpet industry for many years. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husbands William McClain,  James Andrews and daughter Elizabeth Helms.

 

Survivors include her nieces Linda Walden, Brenda Turner, a special friend to Elizabeth Cherie Pitts, special friends Andrew & Melissa Barnes.

 

Graveside Services will be held on Sunday February 18, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in Upson Memorial Gardens.

Anne Powell Griggers

Mrs. Anne Powell Griggers, age 95, of Thomaston, GA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at West Village Retirement Community.  Graveside funeral services to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, February 17, at 10:00 AM, at South View Cemetery with Rev. Jason Weems officiating.

Mrs. Griggers was born on March 2, 1928, in Thomaston to the late William Dunham Powell and the late Mallie Barnett Powell.  She was retired from the William Carter Company where she worked as an instructor for 37 years.  She was a dedicated member of the First Methodist Church of Thomaston where she found comfort, community, and spiritual fulfillment throughout her life.  She will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, gentle spirit, and steadfast devotion to her family.  She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will continue to inspire all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Griggers was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James D. Griggers, Sr., and her cherished daughter, Dedra Griggers McElroy.  Her family finds solace in knowing that she has been reunited with her loved ones in eternal peace.

Survivors include her son, James D. Griggers, Jr. of Weaverville, NC; her grandchildren: Matthew (Julie) McElroy of Nashville, TN, and Melanie McElroy (Sean) McNally of Atlanta, GA; and four great grandchildren who brought her immense joy: Kayla Johnson, Ryan McElroy, Owen McElroy, and Anna McElroy.

Helene Kennedy Hall

Mrs. Helene Kennedy Hall, age 77, of Thomaston, GA, died February 14, 2024, at WellStar West GA Medical Center in LaGrange, GA.  No services are planned at this time.

Mrs. Hall was born on November 22, 1946, in Chattanooga, TN, to the late King David Bishop and the late Rose Rogers Bishop.  She was a graduate of Gordon College and was a retired registered nurse.  She was a loving mother and enjoyed caring for her fur babies.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by three brothers: Buck Bishop, Bunny Bishop, and Randy Bishop.

 

Survivors include her husband, Douglas Hall of Thomaston; two sons: Chris Anderson of Linthicum Heights, MD, and Ryan Anderson of West Virginia, and close friends, Wayne and Teresa Compton of The Rock, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Sarah Ellen Statham

Sarah Ellen Statham, age 64, of Meansville, passed away February 15, 2024, at Eternal Hope Hospice.

Sarah was born on December 1, 1959, in Griffin, daughter of the late Onree Jake Garner, Sr., and the late Martha Williams Garner. She enjoyed family cookouts and spending time with her grandchildren. Sarah was in management for Dollar General for many years and most recently the manager at Dollar General in Williamson. She was well known for her commitment to the “Williamson Mall”.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her infant sister, Amanda Lynn Garner; sisters, Mary Garner and Erma Coleman; brother, Jake Garner.

Survivors include her daughter, Angie Statham; son, Mark Statham; grandchildren, Cameron Haren and Gracie Statham; sisters, Martha Garner and Verna Jones; many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11 AM, in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Brandon Foottit officiating.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday morning from 10-11, at the funeral home.

Linda Darlene Railey Coggins

Mrs. Linda Darlene Railey Coggins, age 57, of Bessemer, North Carolina formerly of Thomaston, died Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Caramount Hospital in Gastonia, North Carolina.

Mrs. Coggins was born September 20, 1966, in Thomaston, Georgia, to the late Charlene Rogers Railey, and to Allen Clifford Railey.  She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.  In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by her sister, Wanda Watts.

 

Survivors include her husband Joseph Travis Coggins Jr., daughters, Christy Coggins of Jasper, GA., Amanda Coggins of Flowery Branch, GA., Brandi Coggins of Clarksville, GA., son, Stephen (Tanya) Coggins of Winder, GA., brother, Charles Railey of Thomaston, sisters, Terri (Anthony) Railey Wheeler of Thomaston, Kellie Laughter of Thomaston, Angie (Domingo) Paiz-Lopez of Valdosta, Sharon Fuller of Thomaston, grandchildren, Christian, Tyler, Alexis, Carmen, Ethan, Jordyn, Josiah, Isaac, Jacob, Aher, and Adalynn.

Mary Juanita Ralston Greathouse

Mrs. Mary Juanita Ralston Greathouse, age 92, of Thomaston, died Sunday, February 11, 2024, at her residence.  

Mary Juanita Ralston Greathouse was born on September 20, 1931, to Rev. E.H. Ralston and Bertha Burtz Ralston.  She grew up singing and playing piano in the churches her father pastored.  Mrs. Greathouse worked in bookkeeping at Seaboard Finance Company, Neal Logue Department Store, and Don Page‘s Law Firm before becoming the owner and publisher of The Upson Home Journal newspaper.  In her younger years, she was an active member of the community participating in Leadership Upson, Kiwanis, Jaycees, and past chairman of the local Democratic Party.  She was a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association Ladies Auxiliary and served as secretary-treasurer, vice president, and president during her tenure. In her later years, Mrs. Greathouse enjoyed antiquing, sewing, crocheting, playing the piano, and gardening.  

 

Mrs. Greathouse is preceded in death by her husband, the late Sheriff Merrill Greathouse; a brother, Eugene Ralston; and a brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” Alfonso.

 

Survivors include two sons, Dan (Diane) Greathouse and Don (Julie) Greathouse, of Thomaston; a daughter, Cheryl (Nancy) Greathouse of Thomaston; two brothers, Rudolph (Ann) Ralston and Wilburn (Shirley) Ralston; two sisters, Martha Alfonso and Elizabeth (Richard) Beohm;  sister-in-law, Jean Ralston; grandchildren Jennifer (Michael) Rogers, Rachael (Jeff) Truitt, Murphy (Emily) Greathouse, Ashli (Matt) Farrar, Blake (LeAnn) Odom, Brittany (Ed) Garcia, Nikki Martin, and Bobby (Kayla) Botts;  14 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandchild. Several nieces and nephews also survive. 

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday February 14, 2024, from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Barbara Stewart Corley

Mrs. Barbara Stewart Corley, age 91, of Thomaston, died Monday, February 12, 2024, at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Griffin, GA.  Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Corley will be held on Thursday, February 15, at 3:00 PM, in New Hope Cemetery in Yatesville, GA, with Rev. Keith Corley officiating.

Mrs. Corley was born in Dozier, AL, on July 3, 1932, to the late T. V. Stewart and the late Nina McGee Stewart.  She earned a BS degree from Auburn University and a Masters Degree in Library Science from the University of Georgia.  Mrs. Corley was retired from the Thomaston City School System where she was the librarian at R. E. Lee Institute for many years.  She was a member of the Thomaston-Upson Retired Teachers Association and the Georgia Retired Educators Association.  Mrs. Corley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston.


In addition to her parents, Mrs. Corley was preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Corley and a son, David Leon Corley.  She is survived by three children: Rev. Keith Corley, Ann C. Pasley, and Sidney (Christi)Corley, all of Thomaston; five grandsons: Jason (Vanessa) Corley of Westmont, IL; Rob (Elise) Corley of Thomaston; Zack Pasley of Thomaston; David Corley of Colorado Springs, CO; and Jack Corley of Thomaston. Many great grandchildren also survive.

Ronald “Ronnie” Herbert Thompson

Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Herbert Thompson, age 79, of Williamson, passed away February 10, 2024.  He was born in Griffin, son of the late James Edgar Thompson and Katie Renfroe Thompson.  Ronnie was a heavy equipment operator working in the grading and clearing business. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting.  He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Erline Lawson.

 

He is survived by his wife of 60 years:  Judy Thompson; children: April Byrd (Ron) and Blake Thompson (Jennifer Lifsey) all of Meansville; grandchildren: Savannah Byrd (Brandon Beasley), McKenzie Byrd, Jordan Thompson (Kas Burris), Brooke Ramos (Ish Ramos), Kyle Thompson, and Raegan Thompson; great-grandchildren: Tucker Thompson, Hadley Ramos, Milan Ramos and Huxley Thompson; sister: Sarah Gunter (Charles); several nieces and nephews.

 

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Al Shackelford and Pastor Mark Dix officiating.  

 

Friends may visit the family on Tuesday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

Ronald “Ronnie” Sanford McChargue, Sr

Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Sanford McChargue, Sr., age 85, of Thomaston, passed away February 9, 2024.  He grew up in Thomaston, son of the late Britt McChargue and Ann Walker McChargue.

Ronnie was as auto mechanic for most of his life. He began working with his dad at Britt’s Garage and then around 1979-80, he opened his own shop, Ronnie’s Auto Service on Jeff Davis Road in Thomaston. He enjoyed restoring old cars, building cabinets, woodworking, gardening, and canning.  

 

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Johnson McChargue, grandchildren, Toni McChargue and Keith McChargue, and his brother, Freddie McChargue.

 

He is survived by his sons: Allen McChargue (Lisa) of Thomaston, Jeff McChargue (Mary Ann) of Milner and Ronald “Rock” McChargue (Lisa) of Thomaston; grandchildren: Daniel McChargue, Christopher McChargue, Heather McGinnis (Robin), Zack McChargue (Nancy) and Caleb McChargue (Ashley); sister: Mary Ann Brown (Floyd) of Jonesboro; 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Charlie R. McCrary, Jr

Mr. Charlie R. McCrary, Jr., age 81, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at Atrium Hospital Navicent, Macon, GA.  Funeral services for Mr. McCrary will be held on Saturday, February 10, at 11:00 AM in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.  Dr. Ryan Christopher will officiate, and interment will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Friday, February 9, from 4:00 until 6:00 PM.

Mr. McCrary was born in Thomaston on October 9, 1942, to the late Charlie Rudolph McCrary, Sr. and the late Mozelle Rogers McCrary Wilks.  He grew up in Silvertown.  He was a 1960 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and graduated with twelve years of perfect attendance.  He enlisted in the US Navy and served as an Aviation Electrician-Aircrewman from November of 1961 until March of 1966.  Upon being discharged, he returned to Thomaston and married Mary Ann Barron on July 9, 1967.  He earned an  associates degree from Upson Technical College and also graduated from Gordon Military College.  Mr. McCrary worked for Martha Mills for seventeen years and was the founder and owner of McCrary Electric for nineteen years.  He later worked as owner of Charlie "Mac" Pump and Electric and considered himself "selectively" retired.

 

In addition to his parents, Mr. McCrary was preceded in death by  two brothers, Donald McCrary and Randy McCrary.

 

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Barron McCrary of Thomaston; three daughters: Christine (Shane) Driver of The Rock, GA; Angelyn (Robbie) Sheppard of Thomaston, and Ashley (Jason) Holt of Forsyth, GA; two sisters: Janie Evans  and Gloria (Jerone) Phillips, both of Thomaston; and four grandchildren: Marlie (Zach) Grogan, Annie Sheppard, Grayson Sheppard, and Michael Holt. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
