Vicki Lynn Brooks

Vicki Lynn Brooks, age 55, of Thomaston, passed away August 27, 2022, at her residence.

Vicki was born on February 11, 1967, in Griffin, daughter of the late Charlie Goddard, Jr., and the late Syble Jones Goddard. When her kids were growing up, she was the neighborhood mom. She never met a stranger and would do all she could to help others. She was a truck driver for many years under the call sign Dynamite. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Wayne Goddard, and sister, Jane Peace.

Survivors include her sons, Anthony Brooks (Kelly Henley) of Thomaston, Shawn Brooks (Brandy McDaniel) of Thomaston; sisters and brothers in law, Debra and Tony Dias of Griffin, Brenda and Geneo Fallin of Pike County; grandchildren, Bella, Kaizley, and Karter; many nieces, nephews , and friends. 

Friends may visit the family on Friday, September 2, from 5-7 PM, at Moody Daniel Funeral Home.

Constance “Connie” Baldwin Wynne

Constance “Connie” Baldwin Wynne, age 85, of Griffin, passed away August 27, 2022.

Connie was born on March 11, 1937, to the late Stephens and Lucille Baldwin. She owned and operated Wynne’s Jewelry store for more than 40 years. She worked at United Bank for another 10 years.

 

Connie was a member of Griffin First United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She faithfully attended the Seekers Sunday School class. She also volunteered at the church help desk. Connie enjoyed flowers and hummingbirds. She was known to work in her garden and cut her grass, even well into her eighties. Connie loved playing cards and gathered with friends every Friday for a friendly card game. She loved her family and her grandsons. Connie was a beloved mother, sister, “Monie” and friend to many.

 

Along with her parents, Connie was preceded in death by her husband, John Taylor Wynne, son, John “Jay” Wynne, Jr., and several special dogs: Bella, Charlie and Chauncy.

 

She is survived by her daughter: Kelley Wynne of Griffin; brother: Stephens L. Baldwin, Jr. and his wife Kay of Spartanburg, SC; grandsons: John Taylor Wynne and Justin Taylor Wynne, both of Griffin; great-grandchildren: Abbigail and Hunter Wynne; brother-in-law: Morgan D. Wynne of Greenville, SC; cousins: Terry and Bunny Wynne of Milner; loyal canine companion: Bernie.

Floyd Nelson

Mr. Floyd Nelson, age 47, of Gray, Georgia, died Thursday, August 25, 2022, at his residence.  

 

Mr. Nelson was born on June 27, 1975, in Thomaston to the late Jerry Nelson and the late Vickie Harris Nelson.  He worked for Twin Rivers Logging and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his grandparents, Randall and Judy Harris Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Candice Miller Nelson of Gray, daughter, Amber (Bailey) Hooks of Greenwood, IN., sons, Dylan and Jay Nelson of Thomaston, brothers, Glynn and Darren Nelson of Thomaston, sister, Sandra (John) Crook of Thomaston, grandchildren, Kaylee and Connor Hooks, uncles, Bill and Robbie Harris, many nieces and nephews.

 

Memorial services will be held on Monday, August 29, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Monday August 29, 2022, from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Charlene Railey

Mrs. Charlene Rogers Railey, age 78 of Thomaston, died Friday, August 26, 2022, at her residence.  


Mrs. Railey was born on June 13, 1944, in Upson County, to the late Charlie Rogers and the late Thelma Walden Rogers.  She worked for Thomaston Janitorial Service and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Billy and Paul Rogers.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Railey of Thomaston, daughters, Wanda (Randy) Watts of Statesboro Linda (Timmy) Coggins of Bessermer City, NC., Terri (Anthony) Garner of Thomaston, Kellie Laughter of Thomaston, Angelia (Domingo) Paiz of Valdosta, Sharon Railey of Thomaston, son, Charles Railey of Thomaston, twenty-five grandchildren, and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 29, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday, August 29, 2022, from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Tony Eugene Sweatmon

Mr. Tony Eugene Sweatmon, age 64, of McDonough, passed away August 24, 2022, at his home. For most of his working life Tony was in the heating and air conditioning business. In his early years, he worked at Snapper Power Equipment in McDonough. Tony enjoyed fishing, and trips to St. George Island and Panama City Beach, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Sweatmon, Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Abbott Sweatmon, and his brother Charles W. Sweatmon III.

He is survived by his son: Zach Sweatmon (Amanda Beam); best friend: Karen Cash; brother: Terry Sweatmon (Gloria); sister: Doreen Miller (Nick); nieces and nephews: Nick Miller (Michelle), Brian Miller (Angel), Scott Miller (Brittany), Terry Sweatmon, Jr. (Angela), Mark Sweatmon (Michelle), Tina Ray (Keith) and Mandy Ayers (Kenny); aunt: Patricia Smith; cousins: Brenda Bailey, Cheryl Farr (Wendell), Suzie Britt, Kim Smith Reindl, Kristie Kinsey.

Melanie Frix Scoggins

Melanie Frix Scoggins, age 63, of Griffin, departed to her Heavenly home on August 23, 2022.

Melanie was born on February 11, 1959, to the late Otto and Annie Frix. She married Toney Scoggins and the couple had two daughters, Rachel and Rebekah.  Melanie worked as the office manager for Inman & Associates for almost 20 years. She took pride in her work and considered her coworkers family. Melanie was a resident of Griffin for more than 30 years.

 

Melanie was a devout Christian and prayer warrior. She enjoyed watching sermons on television and interacting with her prayer circle friends online. Melanie had a heart for dogs and was supportive of animal rescue organizations. Melanie enjoyed arts and crafts and making care packages. She loved riding motorcycles with her husband. Melanie was an excellent cook. She was known for her biscuits, chicken & dumplings, and fruit cake made from the family’s own recipe. Melanie always looked her best. She loved to dress up and wear her high heels. Most of all, Melanie was the ultimate mom. She was a loving and giving soul who mothered not only her own daughters but was like a second mother to many other children. Melanie will be remembered as a faithful follower of Jesus, a loving wife, and the most wonderful mother.

 

Along with her parents, Melanie was preceded in death by her sisters, Sandra Bishop and Carol Frix, brothers, Wayne Frix and Richard Frix, beloved canine companion, Harry.

 

She is survived by her husband of 43 years: Toney Scoggins of Griffin; daughters: Rachel Scoggins and fiancé Tony Sanzari of Greenwood, SC, and Rebekah Scoggins Boulton and husband Justin Boulton of Houston, TX; brother and sister-in-law: Steve and Becky Frix of Milner; pup children: Ladd and Angel; grand-pups: Leia, Cami and Max.

 

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, August 27 in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens. Friends may visit the family between 5 PM and 7 PM on Friday, August 26 at the funeral home.

Vivian “Bibi” Peace

Vivian “Bibi” Peace, age 97, of Zebulon, formerly of Leary, Georgia, passed away August 17, 2022.

Bibi was born on May 24, 1925, before the invention of sliced bread, to the late John and Estelle Shivers. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Camilla, Georgia. She was a prayer warrior who was active in church throughout her life. She loved her family and adored her grandchildren. Bibi liked talking on the phone and catching up with relatives and friends. She enjoyed music and loved going out dancing in her younger years.

 

Along with her parents, Bibi was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Peace, infant daughter, Aaron Geraldine Peace, granddaughter, Gina Ann Stone, son-in-law, James H. Stone Sr., sister, Mamie Reeves, and brothers, Jimmy Shivers and Ronald Wright.

 

She is survived by daughters: Melody Stone of Zebulon and Sandra “Kay” Howard of Locust Grove; grandchildren: Ginger (Henry) Lester of Byron, James H. Stone, Jr. of Zebulon, Kim (Ken) Oliver of Covington, Michael Kelly of Covington; great-grandchildren: Matthew (Evelyn) Lester, Jr. of Commerce, Christopher (Chasity) Lester of Byron, Emily (Brian) Mattox of Byron, Tiffani Stone of Alpharetta, Meghan Parker (Scott Ratliff) of Covington, Madison Oliver of Athens, Peyton Oliver of Covington; 13 great-grandchildren.

 

A graveside service will be held at 11 AM on Monday, August 22nd at Mt. Zion Cemetery on Mt. Zion Church Road, Camilla, GA. Friends will receive visitors beginning at 10 AM at the cemetery. Friends may visit the family from 4 PM until 6 PM on Sunday, August 21st at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.

Mr. Jon Barron Gulley, age 21, of Thomaston, GA, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, August 20, 2022, in Statesboro, GA. 

Funeral services for Mr. Gulley will be held at the Upson-Lee Fine Arts Center on Saturday, August 27, at 11:00 AM with graveside services to follow at Glenwood Cemetery. Rev. Hugh Smith, Jr. and Rev. Bill Barber will officiate. The family will receive friends at the Upson-Lee Fine Arts Center from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, on Friday, August 26. 

 

Barron was born in Thomaston, GA, on December 21, 2000, to Russell Strom Gulley and Rhonda Lowe Gulley. He graduated from Upson-Lee High School in 2019 and was attending Georgia Southern University, majoring in Business Administration. While at Upson-Lee, Barron participated in football, baseball, and golf, making it to the state golf tournament. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, especially interested in duck hunting. When he wasn't enjoying the outdoors, Barron enjoyed playing Xbox with his friends and tinkering with his truck. His favorite companion was Bo, his yellow lab. 

 

Barron was employed by Chick-fil-A, Thomaston, and he had recently begun working at Chick-fil-A, Statesboro. He was a certified lifeguard, working several summers at the Thomaston-Upson Recreation Pool. 


Barron was a member of Christ Chapel Community Church, Zebulon, GA. 

 

Barron was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Howard Wayne Gulley of Ray City, GA. Survivors include his parents, Russell and Rhonda Gulley of Thomaston, GA: brothers: Logan Strom Gulley and Brooks Perdue Gulley of Thomaston, GA; grandparents: Ronnie and Teresa Perdue Lowe of The Rock, GA, Jean Strom Gulley of Valdosta, GA, and Betty Gulley of Ray City, GA; uncles, aunts, and cousins: Brent (Brandi) Lowe, Cal, Clint, and Maggie of Jackson, GA, and Ben (Kelly) Lowe, Kaitlyn, Wyatt, and Abbi of Thomaston, GA. Additionally, Barron had a host of close friends that were like family.

Mrs. Louise Bradshaw Fallin, age 87, of Jensen Beach, Florida, died Friday, August 19, 2022, at Solaris Healthcare Parkway in Stuart, Florida. 

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Fallin will be held Wednesday, August 24, at 2:00 PM, at Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Travis Graham officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home by 1:30 PM for a procession to the cemetery on Wednesday. 

 

Mrs. Fallin was born June 6, 1935, in Thomaston, Georgia, a daughter of the late Clyde Bradshaw and the late Allie Mae Ruffin Bradshaw. She was active in 4-H and was a 1953 graduate of R.E. Lee Institute. She married Franklin E. Fallin on April 10, 1955. She was a bookkeeper and administrative assistant for the Martin County School System where she retired in 1989. She was raised in Valley Grove Baptist Church and was presently a member of First Baptist Church of Stuart. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and spending time with her family. 

 

Mrs. Fallin is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Franklin E. Fallin of Jensen Beach, Florida; daughter, Kim (Mark) Richmond of Windermere, Florida; son, Brad (Lany) Fallin of Dallas, Georgia; son, Greg (Laura) Fallin of Vero Beach, Florida; sisters, JoAnne Eubanks and Linda Collins; brother, Jack Bradshaw; grandchildren, Sara, Joey, and Michael, and great grandchildren, Donovan, Vincent, Eddie, Gustavo, and Gabriella. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. 

 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Fallin was preceded in death by her sisters, Bonnell Corley and Betty Adams.

Mr. Tony Walls, age 55, of Greenville, passed away August 19, 2022, at his home. He grew up in Atlanta, son of the late Joseph Walls and Louise Hester Walls. Tony worked for King Tree Service for 20 years and then for K & H Electrical for an additional 10 years. He enjoyed singing and in his early years was in the Southern Eagle Band. He was a kind and loving guy who was fun to be around and liked to make everyone laugh.

 

In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his brother David Walls.

Mr.  Carroll "Big Earl" Pevey II, age 66, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.  

Mr. Pevey was born on June 6, 1956, in Tallahassee, Florida, to the late Carroll Earl Pevey, and Emma Jean Reese Pevey.  He worked as a master auto technician for Ford Motor Company where he was the Shop Manager for 40 plus years, and then went on to work at Home Depot.  He was a faithful member of New Harmony Baptist Church for 30 years.  He is preceded in death by his father.

 

Survivors include his wife, Molly Summitt Pevey of Thomaston, mother, Emma Jean Pevey of Hahira, daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Dean of Hahira, Pamela Pevey of Reidsville, Carol Jean (Derrick) Anderson of Altha, Florida, Vann (Scooter) Gilbert of Tyrone, daughter-in-law, Beth Speelman of Thomaston, son, Josh (Jennifer) Speelman of LaGrange, brother, Mike Pevey of Tallahassee, Florida, mother-in-law, Frances Summitt of Thomasville. 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Clayton Troy "C. T." Smith

Mr. Clayton Troy "C. T." Smith, 58, of Griffin, GA, died Friday, August 12, 2022, at Upson Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends on Friday, August 19, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. 

Mr. Smith was born in Waycross, GA, on September 11, 1963, to Tina Smith and the late William David Smith, Sr. He was self-employed as a pilot escort vehicle driver and was an excellent vocalist and guitarist. He had performed with several bands including Brother Smith, Hip Shakers, and Ex Presidents. 


In addition to his father, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Sean Smith. He is survived by his mother, Tina Smith of Fernandina Beach, FL; two sisters: Cindy Marsh and Kristen (Daniel) Nolan both of AL; two brothers: Chris Smith of Barnesville, GA, and David (Denise) Smith of Kennesaw, GA; and an aunt: Eloise Bryant of Waycross, GA.

Wallace Sams Wainwright

Mr. Wallace Sams Wainwright, age 81, previously of Thomaston, died Saturday August 13, 2022 at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Sams was born on November 7, 1940 in Taylor County to Estelle and Cletis Wainwright then shortly relocated to Thomaston where he grew up on the Silvertown mill village. He married his elementary school sweetheart, Claudine, in 1959 and they were happily married for 62 years. Sams and Claudine had three daughters, Zoe, Mincey and Zeena. He was a section leader at B.F. Goodrich for many years. Sams then went on to drive a dump truck and a log truck until retirement. 

 

From an early age, he loved trapping, fishing and deer hunting. Once he retired, he enjoyed big game hunting in Tennessee and Colorado. Sams was a big part of the Wild Game Cook-Off fundraiser for Shriner’s Children’s Hospital every year. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His favorite things to do were to cook meals for his family and take the great grandchildren fishing and for rides on the gold cart. Sams was preceded in death by his parents. 

 

Survivors include his wife, Claudine Wainwright, daughters Zoe (Joie Mulherin) Wainwright, Mincey (Michael) Bugh, and Zeena Wainwright. Grandchildren, Lee (Heather) McKissick, Tiffany (Jason) Hammonds, Jason (Christina) Wainwright, Abby (Jeremy) Martin, Anna (Justin) Sellers. Great grandchildren, Madison, Elijah, Sarah, Sadie, Kaitlin (Chet), Cody, Raylan, Jacob, Jaeleen, Jonah, Justus, Madison, Jaxon, Rory, Justin Jr., Kaeden, and Elly. Mr. Timothy Wade Watson, age 59, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at his residence.  

 

Mr. Watson was born on December 27, 1962, in Upson County, to the late Randall Watson, and the late Elsie Fogarty Watson.  He served his country in the United States Army and retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections as an Officer.  He was of the Baptist Faith.  He is preceded in death by his parents.

 

Survivors include his wife, Tammy Groce Watson of Thomaston, stepson James (Nalai) Boyt of Thomaston, brother, Terry (Carolyn) Watson of Thomaston, sisters, Patricia Thiel of Thomaston, Judy Ingram of Thomaston, grandchildren, Andrew, Waylon, and Wrenley Boyt.

Stephanie Ann Shriver

Stephanie Ann Shriver, of Meansville, formerly of Ellenwood, passed away August 9, 2022.

 

Stephanie grew up in Ellenwood, Georgia alongside one brother, David. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Ellenwood for many years. She graduated from Mt. Vernon Christian School in 1997. She went on to attend Mercer University in Macon. Stephanie became mother to sons Jacob in 2003 and Joseph in 2004. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Locust Grove.

 

Stephanie spent her life as a devoted stay-at-home mother. She was the happiest when she was surrounded by her family. Stephanie loved painting, reading, gardening, fishing, and camping. She loved the Lord, her family and she lived her life her way.

 

Stephanie was preceded in death by her grandmother, Rose Ann Martin Carmichael, grandfather, Thomas Roger Martin and uncle, Thomas Michael Martin.

 

She is survived by her sons: Jacob Whatley of Acworth and Joseph Whatley of McDonough; parents: Floyd and Mitzi Shriver of Meansville; brother and sister-in-law: David and Courtney Shriver of Meansville; four nieces: Abby, Sarah, Leah and Elizabeth Shriver; cousins: Jeremy, Jennifer, Christina and their families; grandmother: Margaret Middlebrooks of Senoia; step-grandfather: Billy Carmichael of Stockbridge; uncle: James Martin of Meansville; aunt and uncle: Cissy and Jerome Acuff of Stockbridge.

Mr. John Wesley Clay, age 76, of Thomaston, died Friday, August 12, 2022, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin GA.

Mr. Clay was born on August 15, 1945, in Meriwether County, GA., to the late Marvin and Mary Clay.  He worked as a carpenter.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Tommy, Jim, and Wilbur Clay, and sister, Shirley Stoner.

Survivors include his brothers, Sam and Ricky Clay of Thomaston, sister, Ruth Powers of Thomaston, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Robert “Klondyke” Warr

Mr. Robert “Klondyke” Warr, age 76, of Griffin passed away August 12, 2022.

Mr. Warr was born in Atlanta on January 25, 1946 to the late Ray and Edna Warr. He was a truck driver for Archer Sand & Gravel for 36 years. He enjoyed NASCAR, drag racing and hunting.

 

Along with his parents, Mr. Warr was preceded in death by brothers Randolph Warr and Morris Warr.

 

A memorial service will be held in Mr. Warr’s honor at 7 PM on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.

 

Friends may visit the family beginning at 6 PM at the funeral home.

Timothy McBride Furlow, Jr,

Timothy McBride Furlow, Jr, age 75, formerly of Griffin, GA, passed away on Friday, August 12th, 2022. He was the son of the late Imogene and Mack Furlow, Sr of Americus, Georgia. Tim was born on November 18th, 1947 in Americus, Georgia and graduated from Americus High School in 1964. He went on to graduate from the University of Georgia, where he was a member and president his senior year of the Kappa Alpha fraternity.

After college, he married Margaret (Peggy) Trammell Blakely September 7th, 1968 in Griffin, Georgia. Tim then enrolled into the U. S. Army as an officer and was assigned to Augsburg, Germany where he lived with Peggy and served as a platoon leader. Eighteen months later, he earned the rank of Captain and was reassigned to Viet Nam. After a few months of duty, he was severely injured in combat. In August 1971, he was medically discharged from the U.S. Army and was awarded a Purple Heart and a Combat Infantryman’s Badge. 

 

In 1971, Tim and Peggy settled down in Griffin, Georgia. Tim began work for Commercial Bank then moved to real estate for three years before starting his own life insurance business in 1977. After contracting with National Life of Vermont, he earned both the Charter Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant designations. He went on to become a life member of National Life of Vermont’s President’s Club and the Million Dollar Round Table. He truly enjoyed his career and personifies someone who never met a stranger.

 

Tim was involved in numerous leadership roles in his community and beyond as head coach of the Jim and Joes T-Ball baseball team, head coach of the Barnesville Red Raiders Pewee football team, President of the Griffin Touchdown Club, Board Member of Griffin Country Club, Board Member of Barnesville Academy, member of the Griffin Rotary Club for 25 years, President of the Griffin Exchange Club and Goals for Griffin, member of the Deck Club, member of the Griffin Technical College Foundation, and member of the Gridiron Secret Society. He was also a very devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Griffin and especially the Men’s Bible Class.

 

Tim is survived by his wife of 53 years, Peggy; son, Mack Furlow (Luci); daughter, Meg Parker (Ashley); sister, Patty King (Charlie); grandchildren, Rinne Furlow, Timothy Furlow, William Parker, and Maggie Parker along with many wonderful friends over his lifetime. 

 

A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Griffin, Georgia on Thursday, August 18th, 2022, at 1 pm. 

 

The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice and the wonderful nurses, doctors and staff at the Presbyterian Village in Athens.

Mrs. Polly Elizabeth Helms, age 81, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at Thomaston Manor. 

Mrs. Helms was born on October 6, 1940, in Porterdale, Georgia to the late C.L. Smallwood and the late Ezelle Long Smallwood.  She retired from GA DOT as a secretary and was a member of Clarks Chapel Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Don and Lanier Smallwood, and sister, Dianne Short.


Survivors include her caretaker, lifelong friend and companion, Marvin Helms of Thomaston; daughter, Amy (Al Gladden) Helms of Thomaston; grandchild, Taylor (Sklyer) Loudermilk; great-grandchild, Maizie Loudermilk; and niece, Nan (Charles) Armstead.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 12, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carol Ann Anderson age 61 of Thomaston Ga, died Thursday August 11, 2022 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Anderson was born on January 14, 1961 in Barnesville, Georgia to the late Wilbur Dawson and the late Mildred Suddeth Dawson.  She worked as an Account Manager at Providence Healthcare, and was a Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witness. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Willie Anderson.

Survivors include her daughter, Naomie Anderson of Thomaston, son, David Anderson of Thomaston, brothers, Robert (Renee) Sullivan of Macon, Danny (Timarie) of Thomaston, Bradley (April) Dawson of Thomaston, grandchildren, Tyvera Anderson, Daniel Anderson, and William Stubbs.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at Emory's Chapel Church Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Saturday August 13, 2022 from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Mr. Phil Morris Johnson, Jr., age 75, of Macon, peacefully transitioned to his Heavenly Father at home on August 8, 2022. He was born in Griffin, son of the late Phil Morris Johnson, Sr., and Betty Rose Ragsdale Johnson. Phil served in the National Guard and worked in sales at Chronic Chevrolet in Griffin for over 20 years.  He and his wife Margaret raised their family in Pike County and then moved to Macon in 2007. He was loved and admired by all whose lives he touched.

 

His children and grandchildren were his life, whom he loved endlessly with all his heart. Being a UGA graduate, he loved his GA Bulldogs and being in Athens to reminisce.

 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Margaret Paige Johnson from Swainsboro; children and their spouses: Kelley and Jason Poston of Zebulon; Grant and Dot Johnson of Pike County and Ben and Misty Johnson of Macon; grandchildren: Peyton Johnson, Nolan Poston, Emma Grace Johnson, and Cohen Johnson; brother: Dennis Johnson of Yatesville; sister and brother-in-law: Christy and Chris Freeman of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and close friends.

 

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, August 11, at 10 a.m., at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Al Shackelford will officiate.

Carlton Eugene “Gene” Hand, Sr.

Mr. Carlton Eugene “Gene” Hand, Sr., age 84, of Thomaston, passed away August 7, 2022, surrounded by family.

Gene was born on May 3, 1938, to the late Walter Lee Hand and Omie Ellen Haney Hand. He was an over-the-road truck driver for 43 years, fourteen of which he owned Carol’s Trucking Company. Gene was raised in Jackson Drive Baptist Church and attended Cedar Rock Church in Jackson for many years. He enjoyed watching Saturday morning cartoons and going to car shows. Gene especially loved traveling. He loved to vacation at the beach, in the mountains and all over the United States. There was a special place in Gene’s heart for the beaches of Hawaii. Gene was a loving husband, daddy and PePaw.

 

Along with his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother James “Jimmy” Douglas Hand. He is survived by his wife of 32 years: Cirie Ison Hand of Thomaston; children: Carl and Linda Hand of Meansville, Richard and Lynn Hand of Jackson, Stacie and Mike Echols of McDonough, Kymberly and Patrick Maine of Seattle, WA; grandchildren: Dena (Shane) Moore, Misti (Tony) Moore, Harley Maine, Olivia Maine, Sierra Maine, Kyle (Kimmie) Head, Korey Echols and Emily Echols; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Vicki Turner and Gennie (Terry) Hurley; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Gayle Shirley Herrington

Gayle Shirley Herrington, age 74, of Thomaston, Georgia, passed away on August 6, 2022. Gayle was born on April 25, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Lenard and Minnie Chitwood Shirley. She accepted Jesus as her Savior at an early age.

She retired as a Senior Corporate Recruiter with Granite Services International, Inc. Her work included the Southeastern part of the United States and she lived and worked in many states. She was living in Tampa, Florida when she retired. She later moved back to her home state of Georgia. She attended the First Baptist Church in Thomaston, Georgia, and was an active member of The Gleaners Sunday School class. She was very generous in her love and support for her family. She supported churches, and many charitable organizations. She received her education from East Atlanta High School and Georgia State University.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Linda Buckingham.

 

She is survived by her brother, Leonard Shirley (Margaret). Nieces: Amanda McLaughlin, Renee Ingle, Hannah Smith and Audrey Shirley. Nephews: Joshua Shirley, Jonathan Lynch, Acton Shirley, Cole McLaughlin and Cooper McLaughlin.

 

Gayle enjoyed playing golf for many years. She liked hunting, fishing, reading and traveling. Most of all she loved spending time with her family.

 

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Thomaston, Georgia, on Friday, August 12th, 2022, at 3 PM. Friends may visit the family from 2 to 3 pm prior to the service. Rev. Ted Kandler will officiate. In lieu of flowers, you may donate in Gayle’s memory to the Gleaners Sunday School Ministry at First Baptist Church, 208 South Church Street, Thomaston, Georgia 30286.

Larry "Stroke" Frank Wilburn II

Mr. Larry "Stroke" Frank Wilburn II, age 49, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

 

Mr. Wilburn was born March 22, 1973, in Warm Springs GA, to Larry Wilburn Sr and Becky Huckaby Bartlett. He worked at Pallets and More in Thomaston.

 

He is survived by his fiance, Leslie Payton; daughter, Nicole (T J) Rampley of Box Springs GA; son, Gavin Wilburn of Thomaston; brother Kenneth Wilburn of Thomaston; and grandchildren, Blake, Izzy, and Bailey. He is preceded in death by his Uncles, Tommy Huckaby, and Bill Young; aunt, Terri Young; and Nephew, Billy Young. 

 

A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Wilburn will be held at a later date.

Johnny Crawford Eppinger

Mr. Johnny Crawford Eppinger, age 49, of Thomaston, passed away August 3, 2022, at Brightmoor Hospice.  Johnny grew up in Pike County, son of the late Joseph Eppinger and Mary Lansford Eppinger. Johnny was in the HVAC business and worked for White Heating and Air for 30 years. He loved Ford trucks, fishing, the GA Bulldogs, growing tomatoes, and tending to his garden. He especially enjoyed it when he and Pam rode around in his truck with the windows down.

Johnny was the youngest of 12 children and was preceded in death by his sister and brothers, Dale, Bo Jack, Fat Back, June Bug and Ronnie.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years: Pam Eppinger; children: Katie Raybon and Kenny Raybon (Chasity); grandchildren: Rielee, Trenton, Jaxson and Bryce; sisters: Martha Mitchell (Red), Faye Hoard, Evelyn Yoeman (Shorty), Peggy Brown, and Helen Gassett (Tommy); brother: Buddy Eppinger; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Tammy and Dennis Moon and their daughter Emily Moon; many nieces and nephews; and his four dogs: Buddy, Diamond, Bailey, and Bell Bell, who were just like his kids.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, August 6, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.  Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Rev. James D. Wilson officiating.
