MRS. ELANE BEST DANIEL

Mrs. Elane Best Daniel, 75, of Thomaston, died Thursday, February 27, 2020,
at her residence.  Memorial services for Mrs. Daniel will be held on Friday,
March 6, at 4:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.  The family
will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 3:00 until the funeral

MR. JOEL MARTINEZ MACIEL SR.

Mr. Joel Martinez Maciel Sr. age 76 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday February 25, 2020 at Harborview Health and Rehab.
Mr. Martinez Maciel Sr. was born on March 19, 1943 in Jalisco, Mexico to the late Guadalupe Martinez and the late Socorro Maciel.  He worked in construction and was a member of St. Peter The Rock Catholic Church.  He is preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Gracla Damin- Flores, sons, Erick Martinez, Joel Martinez Jr., daughters, Imelda Martinez, Arcelia Martinez, Maricela Martinez, several brothers and sisters and nine grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday February 28, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. from St. Peter The Rock Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  Family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Thursday February 27, 2020 from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m.

MR. JULIUS OTIS "TINK" KING

Mr. Julius Otis "Tink" King heard that the fish were biting in heaven so he peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Monday night, February 24, 2020.  Tink was born on June 9, 1929 to the late Joe Henry King and Ida Belle King being one of eight children.  Born in Lindale, Georgia, his family moved to Thomaston in the late 1930's to find work during the depression.  He served his country in the United States Navy, and was a member of the local Masonic Lodge for 60 years.
Tink started his career with Thomaston Mills as a roller scrubber in the Spinning Department and over the years worked his way to the position of Division Superintendent of Spinning and Warping upon his retirement.  He was regarded as on of the most knowledgeable men in the entire company.  Tink was a great athlete, particularly in baseball where he excelled as an outfielder.  He was part of the 1946 American Legion baseball team that won the Southeast Region Championship to advance one step from the Legion World Series.  It was for this accomplishment that he and the team were elected to the Thomaston-Upson Sports Hall of Fame. He then went on to spend two years in the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Organization.
Tink was an avid fisherman and loved to fish the Flint River, Potato Creek and many lakes and ponds on a regular basis.  Many of his catches are mounted and preserved to a monument to his success.  He also coached youth baseball and church league softball teams, leading them to numerous championships.  He was a former member for many years of Clark's Chapel Baptist Church and for the past eighteen years he endured the preaching of his son as a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.  `
Tink was loved and appreciated for the colorful and delightful character that he was.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Norma King and five of his siblings.  He is survived by his son, Dr. Rex (Vicki) King, his daughter Ms. Connie Nossett: a very special friend, Ms. Fay Grant: his brother, Mr. J.C. King of Milledgeville; and his sister, Mrs. Faye Roebuck of Thomaston.  He leaves behind four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, seven stray cats, and the crew at Big Chic on Barnesville Street whom he called his "Chics".
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from Mountain View Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. burial will follow at Upson Memorial Gardens.  Family and friends will gather at Coggins Funeral Home on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. to share some more fishing stories and replay the many baseball and softball games that were so precious to him.

Mrs. Phyllis Louise Holland age 65 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday February 22, 2020 at The Medical Center of Central Georgia.
Mrs. Holland was born on November 6, 1954 in Reynolds Ga, to the late Arlin Dean and the late Virginia Lee Maddox Dean Cook. She worked as a caregiver.
Survivors include her husband Tommy Holland of Thomaston Ga, daughter Dixie (Andrew) McKinney of Thomaston Ga, son Scott Jones of Thomaston Ga, brothers Larry Cook of Thomaston Ga, Danny (Gloria) Cook of Thomaston Ga, Tim (Renae) Cook of Thomaston Ga, sisters Terry Deloach of Greenville Ga, Lynn (Ricky) Fuller of Thomaston Ga, Marie (Jackie) Taunton of Thomaston Ga, 5 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild.

Mr. Clarke Theodore Wegner age 78 of Macon Ga, died Saturday February 22, 2020 at Coliseum Northside Hospital in Macon.
Mr. Wegner was born on April 29, 1941 in Arlington Iowa to the late Theodore Wegner and the late Mary Clarke. He was formerly employed with Central Highschool where he worked as a teacher for many years until his retirement. Mr. Wegner served his country in the U.S. Army. He had a passion for sailing and loved sailing with his late wife Carol Ann Wegner. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Carol Ann Chapman Wegner.
Survivors include his daughters Jacqueline Wegner Reinish of Wayne Pa, Leslie (Chad) Murphy of Thomaston Ga, sons Tim (Agnieszka) Wegner of Westboro Ma, Justin (Katie) Connell of Atlanta Ga, brothers Richard (Kay) Wegner of Kansas City Mo, Steven (Marilou) Wegner of Platte City Mo, 9 grandchildren.

MR. HAL MICHAEL "MIKE" ENGLISH

Mr. Hal Michael "Mike" English, age 72, of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday, February 19, 2020, at Emory St. Josephs Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. English was born on February 24, 1947 in Thomaston Ga, to Dixie Watson Huguley and the late Hal H. English. He was co-owner of English Contractors. Mr. English loved coaching and officiating sports here in Upson County touching the lives of the young athletes. He loved the Lord and served as an interim pastor of several churches and also served as associate pastor touching the lives of the people in those congregations. Mr. English is preceded in death by his father Hal H. English and his son Chris English. He served his country in the U.S. Air-Force.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Brenda English of Thomaston Ga, son Mr. Lee English of Thomaston Ga, mother Mrs. Dixie Huguley of Thomaston Ga, brother Mr. Chuck (Lynn) English of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Lynn (Randall) Farmer of Macon Ga, grandchildren Cazzidy English & Hunter English, a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Frank C. Varner, Jr., age 82, of Thomaston, passed away early Thursday
morning, February 20, 2020, at his residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Varner will be held on Saturday, February 22, at
2:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, with Rev. Andy
Cunningham officiating. A private family interment will follow the service.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the
service in the church social hall.

MRS. MARY LORRINE FINCHER BURKE

Mrs. Mary Lorrine Fincher Burke age 91 of Thomaston Ga, died Monday February 17, 2020 at Brightmoor Hospice.
Mrs. Fincher, was born July 5, 1928 in Anniston, AL., to the late Otis Roscoe Fincher and Bertha Lee Crosley.  She retired after 25 years in the spinning room at B.F. Goodrich and was a member at Faith Baptist Church in Thomaston, GA. 
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James C. Burke, son, Larry Burke, brothers, Otis R. Fincher Jr. and Bobby Fincher.
Survivors include her sons, Eddie Lamar (Peggy) Burke of Griffin, GA., Randall L. Burke of Thomaston, GA., sisters, Bessie Dinkins of Griffin, GA., Gladys Johnson of Thomaston, GA., Joann Rayborn of Thomaston, GA., and Mary Smith of Thomaston, GA., seven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. 
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday February 19, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church in Thomaston, GA.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Tuesday February 18, 2020 from 6:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Antoinette Ferrell Shirah, age 82, of Thomaston GA, died Wednesday, February 12, 2020, at  her residence.

Mrs. Shirah, was born January 10, 1938 in Pelham GA, to the late Anthony Jerome Ferrell and Faye Bulloch Ferrell. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Charles Edward Shirah, daughter, Lisa Shirah Newton, granddaughter, Janann Abernathy and sister, Libby Blanton.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Terry) Bloodworth of Thomaston; sons, Ferrell Edward (Pam) Shirah of Tyrone, GA, and Charles Scott (Becky) Shirah of Hopeful GA; sister, Sandra Ferrell Standard; son-in-law, Irving Newton of Thomaston, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Kristen was born on March 6, 1998 to Michelle Gresham Davis.  She was employed at Upson Regional Medical Center as a Registrar and attended Shiloh Baptist Church.

Mr. Ellis Harville Shepard, 94, of Thomaston, died Sunday, February 9, 2020,
at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation.  Funeral services for Mr. Shepard
will be held on Wednesday, February 12, at 11 AM at Trinity Baptist Church.
Rev. Bob Wilson will officiate and burial will follow in Upson Memorial
Gardens. The family of Mr. Shepard will receive friends at Trinity Baptist
Church on Wednesday, February 12, at 10 AM until the funeral hour.
He is preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, and his wife of 67
years, Mrs. Betty Benson Shepard .
Mr. Shepard was born March 8, 1925, in Dexter, GA,  son of the late William
E. Shepard  and Bessie Underwood  Shepard . He was reared in Thomaston, GA
and was a 1943 graduate of RE Lee Institute in Thomaston.  Upon graduation
he enlisted in the US Army and fought during  World War II in the European
theater of action.  He was part of the 174th Field Artillery ( heavy
artillery division) and participated in major battles at Normandy, Northern
France, Central Europe, Ardennes/Battle of the Bulge, and Rhineland.  Upon
discharge at the end of WWII in 1945, he returned to Thomaston and began his
career as an auto mechanic.  He worked for many years as owner/operator of
Shepard's Auto Service until his retirement.  After retiring, he and Betty
enjoyed many fun times travelling in their RV and participating in a
Southern Baptist ministry called Campers on Mission.
Mr. Shepard was a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church. He taught Sunday
School and served faithfully as a deacon for many years.  Until his death he
was the church's oldest living member.
Mr. Shepard is survived by two sons, Bob (Susan) Shepard of Thomaston and
Joe (Laurie) Shepard of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Fred (Shirley)
Shepard of Arkansas; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

208 South Church St., Thomaston, GA 30286.
