MRS. GRACE EVANS GASKILL
Mrs. Grace Evans Gaskill, age 96, passed away May 6, 2016, at Providence Nursing Center.
She was the youngest of ten children born to Parson LeRoy Evans and his wife Mary Cordelia Vaughn Evans. Her two brothers, Will and L. B., predeceased her, as did six of her sisters: Mae Kelly Joyner, Essie McCraven, Bessie Hammond, Jessie Holmes Coleman, Inda Blanton Renfroe, and Pearl Kent. One sister survives: Ruth Hammond (age 100) of Thomaston.
She was predeceased in 2007 by her husband Ed Gaskill to whom she’d been married 67 years. They were the proud parents of three children: Alice Gaskill Neikirk of Danville, KY; James (Johnnie Ann) Gaskill of Thomaston; and George (Carrie) Gaskill of Murfreesboro, TN. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and 2 great great granddaughters, as well as several nieces and nephews and two faithful caregivers Cherry Simkin and Alleen Hutcherson.
Mrs. Gaskill was a long-time member of Silvertown Baptist Church and attended regularly until her health declined. She retired from Martha Mills. She loved tending her vegetable garden and the flowers in her yard. All plants thrived under her tender care. Even when she wasn’t on the job or in her yard, she kept her hands busy as she made beautiful quilts and crocheted afghans. Family and friends enjoyed the bountiful meals she cooked. Rarely did anyone leave her home without being given a little something: perhaps yard sale toys or books for the children and a plant or a recipe or some extra cake for the adults.
