Dr. Keith Barnes Huckaby passed away peacefully at his home on August 26, 2019 after a long illness, which he fought with courage, strength and humor.
Dr. Huckaby was born in Griffin, Georgia on February 18, 1954, to Juanita Barnes Huckaby and the late Calton H. (June) Huckaby. He graduated from Griffin High School in 1972, then graduated from the University of Georgia School of Pharmacy in 1976, practicing pharmacy in Griffin for 2 years. He felt a call on his life to medicine and so attended the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia, and did his residency training at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in Charlotte, NC. He and his family moved to Thomaston, GA, and he began his solo practice of Internal Medicine in the summer of 1985. He was a gifted diagnostician and a caring, no-nonsense Doctor. He practiced until his health forced retirement in 2017.
He was married to his “sweetie” Vicki Crowder Huckaby for 42 years. Their children are Brian and Jenna Huckaby and their sons Judah and Isaac, and Austin Huckaby and his wife Kristina Ferdinand. It would be an understatement to say he took great delight in his family and loved them with his whole heart.
Keith had many interests including hunting, fishing, photography, travelling, reading, UGA football, and being the pilot of his own small airplane. He also loved music – listening to it, singing in choirs, and playing the guitar and drums. He worked tirelessly to improve the quality of medical care at Upson Regional Medical Center, in his private practice, and in the community. But his greatest passion and focus was to live for Christ, advance His Kingdom, and to leave a legacy for his family and friends. To that end he used his medical skills to do medical mission trips all over the world with “home” being Zambia. He was involved in many local ministries and supported many more. He held leadership and teaching roles in the local churches he attended and was a member of First Baptist Church of Thomaston at the time of his death. He loved Mt. Zion United Methodist Campground, staying on the grounds every year, serving on its Board of Managers and Trustees for years, and was Chairman of the Board at the time of his being disabled.
In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren, and mother, he is survived by three brothers: Bruce (Betti) Huckaby of Macon, Robin (Jan) Huckaby of Dawsonville, and Kevin (Traci) Huckaby of Griffin; his beloved mother-in-law Virginia Crowder, brother-in-law Steve (Jeannie) Crowder and many other family members and close friends. He wanted to express a special thanks to two friends and their wives who have stood by him, challenged him spiritually, gotten him in trouble and with whom he spent over 30 years laughing: Dr. Dan and Gail Bramlett, and Dannie and Vicki Smith.
The funeral for Keith Huckaby will be Thursday August 29, 2019 at at 3:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Thomaston, GA, with Rev. Greg Smith and Rev. Danny Stubbs officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday August 28, 2019, from 6:00-8:00 at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home in Griffin, Ga. An additional visitation will be at First Presbyterian Church in Thomaston from 1:00 – 2:30 pm prior to the service. Interment will be at the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Zetella, GA. In lieu of flowers gifts may be made to the Mt. Zion United Methodist Campground, PO Box 355, Experiment, Ga 30212, or Jubilee Centre Zambia, c/o Dr. Dan Bramlett, 384 Quail Run, Thomaston, GA 30286.
