Courtney Edwards Phelps

Mr. Courtney Edwards Phelps, age 85, of Thomaston, died Sunday, January 8, 2023, at his residence. 

Funeral services for Mr. Phelps will be held Wednesday, January 11, at 2:00 PM, at First Baptist Church of Thomaston with Rev. Bill Barber and Rev. Ted Kandler officiating. Interment will follow the service in South View Cemetery. The family can be contacted at the residence. 

 

Mr. Phelps was born in Crawfordville, Georgia on April 13, 1937, the son of the late Courtney Phelps and the late Vashti Edwards Phelps. He was a graduate of Alexander Stephens High School in Crawfordville and he attended Georgia Military College. He served honorably in the Army Reserves and later the Georgia National Guard for thirteen years. He was employed as a manager for Atlanta Gas Light, later Georgia Natural Gas. Mr. Phelps was very active in the community where he served as President of the Lions Club, Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of the Thomaston Industrial Authority.

 

Mr. Phelps was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston and the Fellowship Sunday School Class. In years prior, he was active in other churches, serving as a deacon, Sunday school and Bible school teacher. He was passionate about many things, including his family, golfing, and hunting. His favorite was playing golf with his buddies. 

 

Mr. Phelps was a loving husband to his wife, Sandra Ellerbee Phelps; a caring and devoted father to his daughters, Kelli Phelps Vaughan and Karla Phelps (Eddie) Kendrick; a loving grandfather to, Ben (CJ) Vaughan, Kaitlin Reid Vaughan, Sarah Kendrick (Alan) Amos, and Hannah Kendrick (Trey) Dunnahoo; a great grandfather to, Ashton Pasley, Colt Amos, Sawyer Amos, Londyn Anglin, and Brooks Vaughan.  In addition to his parents, Mr. Phelps was preceded in death by his sisters, Ann Phelps Sturtevant and her husband, Carleton, and Martha Lyle Silsby.
