Mrs. Mary D. Voss, age 58, of Thomaston, died Sunday, October 30, 2016, at her residence.

Memorial services for Mrs. Voss will be held by her family at a later date.

MR. WILLIAM CARL BILL COLLINS

Mr. William Carl "Bill" Collins, age 49, of Yatesville, died Friday evening, October 28, 2016, at his residence. Funeral services for Mr. Collins will be held Tuesday, November 1, 2016, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Billy Ball will officiate, and burial will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. MRS. FRANCES BRADEN ABERNATHY

Mrs. Frances Braden Abernathy, age 90, of Knoxville GA, formerly of Calhoon  GA, died Sunday, October 30, 2016, at Taylor County Health and Rehab Center.

MISS SOPHIA MARIEL BULLARD

Miss Sophia Mariel Bullard, age 20, of Thomaston GA, died Thursday, October 27, 2016. 

Miss Bullard was born October 31, 1995, in Griffin, to Eugenia Day Bullard and John Bullard. She was a Vet-Tech at the McDonough Animal Hospital, and member of the Thomaston Seventh Day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her parents, Eugenia Day Bullard and John Bullard, both of Thomaston; grandfather, Russell Day of Thomaston; and uncle, Andrew Day of Thomaston (currently stationed in Afghanistan). She is preceded in death by her grandmother, Cecile day.

Funeral services for Miss Bullard will be held on Thursday, November 3, 2016, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, November 2, 2016, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

MRS. ROBERTA K. BOBBIE WATSON MCDANIEL

Mrs. Roberta K. "Bobbie" Watson McDaniel, age 76, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, October 25, 2016, at Southern Regional Medical Center in Riverdale GA.

Mrs. McDaniel was born on April 12, 1940 in Cleveland Ohio to the late James and Freida Hutton Konzen. She was formerly employed with Bellsouth where she worked in the mail room and later worked for Wal-Mart as an associate.

Survivors include her daughter Beth Ann Watson of Thomaston Ga, sons Jody Lee Watson of Thomaston Ga, Larry Alan Watson of Locust Grove Ga, brother Jimmy Konzen of Fl, sister Susie Pogue of Douglas Ga, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Monday October 31, 2016 at 11 a.m. from Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Monday October 31, 2016 from 10-11 a.m.

MRS. JEWEL ELIZABETH BEVEL

Mrs. Jewel Elizabeth Bevel, age 83, of Thomaston GA, died Sunday, October 23, 2016, at Providence Health and Rehab. 

She was born October 26, 1932, in Millen GA, to the late Lonnie and Elene Royal. She was a textile worker with Thomaston Mills Bleachery division, and member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bevel is preceded in death by her husband, Marion Edward Bevel. Survivors are her daughter, Shelia Bevel of Morehead NC; sons, Keith Bevel and Jeffery Marion Bevel, both of Thomaston; sisters, Patsy Lane of Thomaston, and Joyce Thompson of Millen; 7 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bevel, will be held on Friday, October 28, 2016, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 28, 2016, from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

MR. LARRY WILLIS HOBBS

Mr. Larry Willis Hobbs, age 70, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at his residence.

Mr. Hobbs was born on January 11, 1946 in Clearwater S.C. to the late Preston and Ruth Lee Hobbs. He worked as a security guard for Defender Industries for many years. Mr. Hobbs served his country in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his son Timothy Hobbs, brother Danny Hobbs, sister Nancy Coe.

Survivors include his wife Rose Ann Hobbs of Thomaston Ga, daughter Marinda Ann Gibby of Thomaston Ga, son Preston (Diane) Hobbs of Thomaston Ga, Denny (Veronica) Hobbs of McDonough Ga, Bobby Franklin Gibby of Thomaston Ga, Richard Eugene (Shirley Ann) Gibby of Thomaston Ga, Jeptha Earl Livingston of Clayton Ga. 7 Grandchildren.

MR. FRANK BENTLEY JOHNSON

Mr. Frank Bentley "Bo" Johnson age 74 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday October 26, 2016 at Spalding Regional Hospital. 

Mr. Johnson was born on February 5, 1942 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Samuel and Irene Hammock Johnson. He was formerly employed Thomaston Mills where he worked for 40 years and later worked with the City of Thomaston in the public works division. Mr. Johnson served his country in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by a great grandchild, a sister and five brothers.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Patsy Johnson of Thomaston Ga, sons Mr. Richard (Christa) Lee of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Billy (Jennifer) Lee of Yatesville Ga, brother Mr. Johnny Johnson of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Donnie Gordy of Thomaston Ga. sister in law Mrs. Joan Johnson of Thomaston Ga, grandchildren Blake Lee, Dallas Lee, Katie Lee & Hope Lee.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday October 28, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Thursday October 27, 2016 from 6-8 p.m.

MR. THOMAS EUGENE O'NEAL JR.

Mr. Thomas Eugene O' Neal Jr. age 61 of Thomaston Ga, died Sunday October 23, 2016 at his residence. 

Mr. O' Neal was born on March 24, 1955 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Thomas and Miriam Huffman O' Neal. He worked as a painter for many years. Mr. O' Neal was a member of Twin Oaks Baptist Tabernacle Church. He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Eugene O' Neal Sr. and mother Miriam Huffman Stribling.

Survivors include his step father  Robert Stribling of Molena Ga, siblings Linda O' Neal Stribling of Atlanta Ga, Peggyann (Robert) Byers of Blairsville Ga, Bobby (Dawn) Stribling of Augusta Ga, Rita O' Neal Wagner of Weirsdale Fl, Jeffrey (Jessica) O' Neal of Thomaston Ga, Dennis O' Neal of Thomaston Ga, Ricky O' Neal of Thomaston Ga.

A THOMASTON CIVIL RIGHTS ICON HAS PASSED AWAY—MR. J.E. BENTLEY JR., AGE 89 OF WEST MOORE'S CROSSING ROAD, DIED AT HIS RESIDENCE THURSDAY. HE WAS THE OWNER OF BENTLEY AND SONS FUNERAL HOME OF THOMASTON, BARNESVILLE, AND WOODBURY.

FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE ANNOUNCED LATER.

MR. BENTLEY FOUGHT FOR JUSTICE AND EQUAL RIGHTS HIS ENTIRE LIFE—HELPING TO ESTABLISH VOTING PRECINCTS CONVENIENT FOR CITIZENS.

IN THE MID-80'S HE FILED A FEDERAL COURT LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY OF THOMASTON AND COUNTY OF UPSON TO END DISCRIMINATION IN PROMOTION AND HIRING PRACTICES—WHICH RESULTED IN SUBSTANIAL BACK PAY FOR SOME EMPLOYEES.

Mr. Larry W. Watts, 76, of Thomaston, died Thursday, October 20, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 22, at 1:00 PM, in the First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Friday evening from 4 until 6 PM.

MISS MEGHANN ESTELLE SMITH

Miss Meghann Estelle Smith, 24, of LaGrange and formerly of Thomaston, died Sunday, October 16th, 2016 in Columbus.
Funeral services will held Friday, October 21, at 4:00 PM, at the First Baptist Church of Thomaston. Rev. Bill Barber and Rev. Joy Smith will officiate, and burial will follow in the Valley Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in LaGrange on Thursday, October 20, from 10 until 12 noon, at the First Presbyterian Church of LaGrange, and in Thomaston, on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM, at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.
Miss Smith was born in Chattanooga, TN, on February 14, 1992. She was a graduate of Upson Lee High School and later graduated from LaGrange College with a BS in Education and also a Masters Degree. She was employed by The Troup County Board of Education as a teacher at Ethel W. Kight Elementary School.
Miss Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston.
She is survived by her mother, Kenya Jackson (Gary) Campbell of Thomaston; her father, Barry (Kathy) Smith of LaGrange; her fiance, Kenneth Belcher of LaGrange; her grandparents, Elmo and Betty Jackson of Thomaston and Bruce and Alice Smith of LaGrange; a sister, Olivia K. (Cam) Ellis of LaGrange; two brothers, Matthew D. Barr of Auburn, AL, and Trey Smith of LaGrange.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Troup County Humane Society, P. O. Box 1351, LaGrange, GA 30241. Contributions should be earmarked for the new Doggie Park sponsored by the Humane Society. Contributions may also be made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 1000 Circle 75 Parkway #45, Atlanta, GA 30339.

MRS. GERALDINE MEEKS TEAL

Mrs. Geraldine Meeks Teal, 86, of Meansville, died Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Harborview Nursing Care.
Funeral services for Mrs. Teal will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11: 00 AM in the Chapel of the Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Milton Hill will officiate and burial will follow in South View Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Teal will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Teal was born on February 25, 1930 in Upson County and was the last surviving daughter of the late Sheriff Grady and Mattie Spinks Meeks. She was a graduate of R. E. Lee Institute.
Mrs. Teal was employed for a number of years with the Owens Illinois Glass Company in Atlanta. From 1960 until 1963 she managed a local drive-in and teenage gathering place, Roy's Drive In. Until her retirement she was a bookkeeper for the Miller Cabinet Company in Forest Park. She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Teal loved her nieces and nephews and had a special way of making each one of them feel that he or she was her favorite.
Mrs. Teal is survived by three nieces, Sandy Dickens Mock of Thomaston, Christy (Jerry) Chapman of Meansville, and Melva Wade Thomas of Kodak, TN; four nephews, Larry Meeks and Wallace Wade, both of Los Angeles, CA, Gary (Madge) Wise of Panama City, FL, and Jerry (Diane) Wade of Detroit, MI; and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Teal; brothers Maurice Meeks and Troy Meeks; sisters Myrtle Meeks Wade, Maude Meeks Hoyle, Gertrude Meeks Wise, and Margie Meeks Dickens; and nephews Roland Wise, Jack Wade and Dan Hoyle.

MR. CHARLIE RAY CHAMBLEY

Mr. Charlie Ray Chambley, age 77, of Woodland GA, died Monday, October 10, 2016, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

He was born July 19, 1939, in Upson County to the late Dean and Ruby Chambley. He was an auto mechanic and U.S. Marine.

Mr. Chambley is preceded by his wife, Faye Chambley. Survivors are his sons, Wayne Chambley of Zebulon and Kevin (Bridgett) Chambley of Thomaston; brothers, William Edgar (Sandra) Chambley of Roberta and Ronnie Chambley of Griffin; grandchildren, Ben Chambley, Anna Chambley, Taylor Chambley, and Braden Chambley.  

Funeral services for Mr. Chambley will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2016, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Matthews Chapel Cemetery , Woodland GA. Mrs. Lisa Shirah Newton, age 57, of Thomaston, died Saturday, October 1, 2016 at the Atlanta Medical Center.

She was born, February 7, 1959, to Charles Edward and Antonette Ferral Shirah. She worked for the Georgia Secretary of State.

She is survived by her husband, Irving Newton of Thomaston; daughter, Megan Rae Hill of Atlanta; son, Brayton Hill of Michigan; parents, Charles and Antonette Shirah; brothers, Ferral (Pam) Shirah of Tyron, and Scott (Beck) Shirah of Hopeful GA; and sister, Diane (Gerry) Bloodworth of Thomaston.

Private memorial services for Mrs. Newton will be held by her family.

MR. LEONARD D. HARPER JR.

Mr. Leonard D. Harper Jr, age 70, of Molena, died Saturday October 1, 2016 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

He was born July 27, 1946 in Upson County to the late Leonard D. and Gladys Anthony Harper Sr. He was owner of Piggly Wiggly in Greenville and member of Meansville Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving on the USS G.K. Mackenzie (DD836) during Viet Nam.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Connie Harper; sister, Dorothy Hammond; and brother-in-law, Doug Hammond. Survivors are his daughters, Kathy (Shane) Pollard of Thomaston, and Misty (Shaun) Lamb of Molena; brother, James (Susan) Harper of Thomaston; grandchildren, Gage (Melissa) Pollard, Jennifer (Jonathan) Lewis, Amanda (Jonathan) Ellenburg, Jordan Pollard, Kristen (Cliff) Grant, Nick Pollard, Jackson Lamb Abigail Lamb and Scarlett Hebert; great-grandchildren, Isabella Pollard, Landon Lewis, Kymberli Ellenburg, Brantley Grant, Logan Pollard, Bentley Grant, Natalie Pollard, Bo Ellenburg, and Ryker Lewis.

Funeral services for Mr. Harper will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Meansville Baptist Church, with burial to follow in Upson Memorial gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 5, 2016 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the church, and at his residence, 1775 Mt. View Rd. Molena, Monday, and Tuesday, evenings prior to the service.
