Cheryl Dunn Hammond

On January 19, 2023, Heaven’s gain was our loss as Cheryl Dunn Hammond went to be with the Lord. She was a beautiful person inside and out and she had a heart of service – service to family, friends, and community.

Cheryl was the daughter of the late Rose and Edsel Dunn of Meansville, GA. She graduated from Pike County High where she excelled in academics and basketball. Cheryl graduated in 1962 as class Valedictorian. Once she graduated from West Georgia College, she returned to Pike County High School to teach, and what a dedicated teacher she was! She served 32 years as a teacher and touched many lives. Many life lessons were learned as well by following the example she lived.

One of her passions was directing senior plays. She had a consecutive run of plays from 1986 to 2005. She had this to say about her career: “At some point I realized that ‘teacher’ is not the work I do, but who I am.”

Being with family and friends was a joy for her. She loved family fish fries at her mom and dad’s, birthday dinners at River Bend, and recently Tim had started having fish fries at her house. She also loved having family reunions at her house. Another favorite place of hers was her house at St. Simons. Family and friends often accompanied her on these trips.

In 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, Jerry Hammond. They had three children, Tim, Lori and Kelli. She cherished her time with family and especially loved her time with her three grandchildren: Jeffrey, Dalton and Dusty.

Cheryl was a longtime member of Meansville Baptist Church and was loved by many people there. She served her church as Sunday School teacher, a senior citizen event coordinator, and a volunteer for Vacation Bible School.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Hammond, daughter, Kelli Hammond, brothers, Larry Dunn and Dwayne Dunn, and brother-in-law Randy Carter.

She is survived by her son: Tim Hammond of Zebulon; daughter and son-in-law: Lori and Charlie Wells of Molena; grandsons: Jeffrey Hammond, Dalton Hammond, and Dusty Wells; sister: Rosemary Carter of Zebulon; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 1 PM on Monday, January 23rd in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family between 3 PM and 5 PM on Sunday, January 22ndat the funeral home.
