Betty Faye Flournoy Hammock

Mrs. Betty Faye Flournoy Hammock, age 85, of Woodland, died Wednesday June 28, 2023, at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

Mrs. Hammock was born on November 25, 1937, in Woodbury, Georgia to the late Azzie B. Pearson Flournoy. She worked at the Panasonic Assembly Plant and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.  In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joe Harwell Hammock, and sister, Jane Reaves.  

 

Survivors include her nieces, Kim (Ronnie) Hendricks, Kelley Edwards, great nieces and nephews, Alex Edwards, Colin Hendricks, Colby Hendricks, and Kelybess Hendricks.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. from The Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Friday, June 30, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Robert Jeffery Thompson

Robert Jeffery Thompson, age 70, of Keaton Beach, Florida, died Tuesday, June 27, 2023.  

Jeffery was born on January 18, 1953, in Thomaston, Georgia to the late Robert Jefferson “Bobby” Thompson and the late Carolyn Ard Thompson.

 

Jeffery is a graduate of R.E. Lee Institute class of 1972 and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. In his early career Jeffery owned a Serpro Franchise in Perry, Georgia. He later owned Thompson Trucking Company and over his lifetime hauled very expensive sports cars all over the country, truck driver for different companies, and did backhoe work. He was currently retired doing odd jobs with his backhoe.

 

Jeffery was an avid fisherman and gardener, he had just planted 25 blueberry trees, multiple sun patients, other fruit trees, spinach, etc. He loved his backhoe so much that he actually talked to it. He loved doing for people with no pay whether it was taking patients to the hospital, which was an hour and half away, taking trees down with his backhoe, putting water systems in, boating, pets, and having large fish fries for his family and friends.

 

Surviving Jeffery in death are his wife Carol Olsen Thompson of Keaton Beach, Florida, stepson as close as a son, Jeremy (Jill) Doggett of Jacksonville Arkansas, daughter Rebecca Elizabeth Beach, grandson, Noah Beach of North Georgia, step grandsons, Cole Doggett of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Brett Doggett of Jacksonville, Arkansas, Hunter (Kate) Wyatt of Jacksonville Arkansas, Trenton Doggett of Georgia, sister Janice Thompson Adams of St. Simons Island, Georgia.

 

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday July 1, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. from Jeffery’s home in Keaton Beach, Florida for family and friends.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Harmony Baptist Church at 163 New Harmony Church Rd. Thomaston, Georgia.

Diane Henner Maldonado

Mrs. Diane Henner Maldonado, age 68, of Concord, passed away June 23, 2023.  Diane grew up in Miami, Florida, graduating from North Miami Beach Senior High School in 1973.  She married David Maldonado in 1977. They lived in Florida for several years before moving their family to Atlanta in 1989, and then to Concord in 1990.  Diane worked as a substitute teacher for the school system, then transferred to the food service area at Pike County Elementary School, where she worked full time for many years.  She loved sarcasm, laughter, and fresh air. She was an avid reader and enjoyed word games and puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Henner, her step-father, Steve DiCiacco and her brother-in-law, Glen Magaldi.

 

She is survived by her husband: David Maldonado; children: Jorge Maldonado (Lindsay), Kristine Maldonado, Erin Maldonado-Borntreger (Levi) and Cheryl Maldonado; grandchildren: Prana, Milow, John, Flora, Lyla and Dylan; mother: Marion DiCiacco; sisters: Aileen Henner and Marion Magaldi.

 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 8, at 10 a.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., at the funeral home.   

 

A private family graveside service will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens.

June Ellerbee Green

Mrs. June Ellerbee Green, age 76, of Meansville, passed away June 26, 2023.  She was born in Thomaston, daughter of the late Mark Ellerbee and Hazel Self Ellerbee.  Mrs. Green was a homemaker and enjoyed playing the piano.  She was a member and church pianist at Meansville Baptist Church for many years.  Mrs. Green enjoyed baking for her boys. They especially enjoyed her pecan pies, banana bread and sweet potato soufflĂ©. She loved vacationing with friends on Tybee Island, word search books, reading Woman’s Day and Woman’s World magazines, and watching Lifetime and Hallmark movies. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert Green.

 

She is survived by her sons and a daughter-in-law: Jason Green and Joel and Tonya Green; grandchildren: Hailey Green, Courtney Green, and Warren Green; sister: Janice Jones and family.

Mr. Todd Hanely, age 54, of Yatesville, died Monday June 26, 2023 at his residence.  Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Coggins Funeral Home

Milton Donald “Don” Allgood

Mr. Milton Donald “Don” Allgood, age 89, of Molena, passed away June 25, 2023.  Mr. Allgood was born in Walnut Grove, GA, son of the late Randolph Polk Allgood and Mary Ruth Brown Allgood.  In his early years, Mr. Allgood worked many different jobs to make ends meet.  He was a milkman, newspaper deliveryman, sold vacuum cleaners and was in the heating and air conditioning business while working at Delta Air Lines where he retired as a lead supervisor after 35 years.   

He lived in Fayette County for 30 years, then moved to Colorado and lived there for a few years before moving to Molena in 1996.  He enjoyed hunting, traveling with his wife Joann and friends, camping, snow skiing and trips to Alaska fishing. Mr. Allgood was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and frequented Smyrna Baptist Church, both in Molena.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Joann E. Allgood, youngest son, Jon Allgood, brother Virlon, and sisters Ozena, Marcia, Sara Jean, Loretta and Jewell. 

 

He is survived by his children and their spouses: Derrick and Kathy Allgood, Bryan Allgood, Eric and Robin Allgood, Carol and Mike Johnson, and Randy and Marsha Allgood; brothers and sisters-in-law: Alton and Jean and Wayne and Becky; 14 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

 

Friends may visit the family on Tuesday, June 27, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.  Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Brother Geoffrey Zimbelman officiating.

 

Burial will be held at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro.

Amber Daly Wright

Mrs. Amber Daly Wright, age 42, of Zebulon, passed away June 23, 2023, at Emory University Hospital. Amber grew up in Clayton County. She attended Bible Baptist Christian School in Jonesboro and then Lovejoy High School.  Amber was a loving and devoted wife and mother with a heart of gold. She enjoyed watching her children play sports and was often the team mom.  Amber was a member of Second Baptist Church in Griffin. She was a talented photographer who was adventurous and fun-loving.  She will be greatly missed. 

She was preceded in death by her father Richard Joseph “Rick” Daly, brother Toby Daly, grandparents Clarence and Ruby Ensley and Joyce and Joe Daly, aunt Sissy Radics, and mother-in-law Gail wright.

 

She is survived by her husband: Joshua Wright; children: Matthew Wright (Magan), Marissa Wright, Destiny Wright (Adri), Madalyn Wright, and Jordyn Yarbrough (Zachary); mother: Cheryl Daly; sister-in-law: Janaya Daly; nephews: Colton and Mason Daly; and many other family members.

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 28, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor David Hill officiating.

 

Friends may visit the family on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

 

It was Amber’s wish to be buried next to her father. A private graveside service will be held in Moody Memorial Gardens.

Emily Douglas McDuffie

Mrs. Emily Douglas McDuffie age 86 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday June 24, 2023 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. McDuffie was born on February 24, 1937 in Mansfield Ga, to the late William Emmett Loyd and the late Emma Ophelia Cowan Loyd. She owned and operated Douglas Accounting Service for many years. Mrs. McDuffie was a member of Thomaston First Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include her husband Buddy McDuffie of Thomaston Ga, daughters Kathy Douglas of Leesburg Fl, Debbie Douglas (Doug) Overton of San Antonio Tx, son Michael Douglas of Thomaston Ga, grandchildren Brent Sheppard, Robert Sheppard, Hannah Overton, Sarah Overton, Jay Overton.

James L. "Teddy" Hardeman

Rev. James L. "Teddy" Hardeman age 77 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday June 21, 2023, at Harborview Health and Rehab. 

 

Mr. Hardeman was born on August 4, 1945, in Thomaston, to the late James Leonard Hardeman Sr. and the late Robbie Short Hardeman.  He worked at Wal-Mart as a team leader and was a member of Hebron Congregational Christian Church.  He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, James Andrew Hardeman.

 

Survivors include his wife, Jane Johnson Hardeman of Thomaston, daughters, Kim (Bobby) Tucker of Thomaston, Pam (David) Jordan of Waycross, Paula Hardeman of Thomaston, son Tim (Rachel) Hardeman of Thomaston, sisters, Barbara (Laymon) Humphries of Brunswick, Andrea (Randy) Saylor of Thomaston, grandchildren, Vanessa Harp, Jace Hardeman, Ava Hardeman, great-grandchild, Theo Hardeman.

Kathleen “Kathy” Marie Wood

Mrs. Kathleen “Kathy” Marie Wood, age 72, of Milner, passed away June 18, 2023, at Brightmoor Hospice. Kathy was born in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, daughter of the late Bill and Beth Bothwick. She worked for the Henry County School System for many years, and loved her cats.

In addition to his parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Joe Bennett.

 

She is survived by her husband: Tom Wood; children: Frank Bennett (Kelley), Thomas Wood, Diana Wood, Penny Wood, and Tami Wood; brother: Randy Harrison; daughter-in-law: Judi Bennett; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

 

It was Kathy’s wish to be cremated and no services are currently planned.

Roger Gordon Brooke

Mr. Roger Gordon Brooke, age 72, of The Rock, passed away June 18, 2023.  He was born in Atlanta, son of the late Robert Earle Brooke, Sr. and Virginia Sarah Cain Brooke. Roger was a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management. He worked in construction for several years and then returned to college where he received in Civil Engineering degree from Southern Technical College in Marietta. 

Roger worked on large high rise construction projects in numerous states across the Southeast and the Caribbean, including North Carolina, Alabama, and Washington D.C.  He was the lead concrete engineer for the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in D.C., which is the second largest concrete structure in North America. 

 

When he wasn’t hunting on the family farm he loved so much, he was preparing for his next fishing trip.  Any other free time was spent on his tractor, moving dirt and enjoying God’s nature.  Roger was a proud patriot, instilling a love of this beautiful country in any who crossed his path.  

 

He is survived by his sons: Rocky Brooke (Emily) of Senoia and Brantley Brooke of Oviedo, FL; grandchildren:  Conner Brooke, Ivy Jane Brooke and Raelynn Brooke; brother:  Robert E. Brooke Jr. (Barabara) of Thomson.

 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, June 23, 2023, 1 p.m., at Trinity Baptist Church, 410 S. Church Street, Thomaston. Pastor Bob Wilson will officiate. Friends may visit the family after the service at the church. Moody Daniel Funeral Home

Daniel Gatlin

Mr. Daniel Gatlin, age 59, of Forsyth, passed away June 15, 2023, at his home.  Daniel was born in Lakeland, Florida, son of the late Fountain Cleveland Gatlin, Sr. and Helen Skinner Wooten.  In his early years, he worked on a dairy farm. He became a diesel mechanic and worked at Milner Milling and more recently Florida Rock in Tyrone. He enjoyed fishing and woodworking.

 

In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by a brother, Henry and sister, Ruthie.

 

He is survived by his daughter: Anna Marie Gatlin; sons: Nathan Gatlin and James Gatlin; their mother and former spouse: Marsha Gatlin; grandchildren: Daniel Zane Tennant and Abigail Grace Tennant; brothers and sisters: Charlotte Patrick (Robert), Fountain “Buddy” Gatlin, Jr., Virginia Sheridan, Jewel Marsiglio, Melissa Peugh, and Jeff Gatlin (Dale); sister-in-law: Gloria Gatlin; and many other cousins and friends.

James Emmett McLeod

Mr. James Emmett McLeod age 97 of Covington Ga, died Tuesday June 13, 2023, at his residence. 

Mr. McLeod was born on September 2, 1925, in Thomaston, Georgia, to the late Emmett Calvin McLeod and the late Lizzie Irene Mallory McLeod.  He worked for GM office services for 32 years before retirement and then went on to work at R&R Mobility for 12 years and was of the Baptist Faith.  He loved to travel, fish, and gamble.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sons, Marion and Kenneth McLeod, and his brothers, and sisters.

 

Survivors include his daughters, Jacquelyn Corbin of Covington, Phyllis White of Hampton, sons, Charles McLeod of Thomaston, Michael McLeod of Conyers, 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Bobby Franklin Watson age 78 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday June 13, 2023, at Brightmoor Hospice. 

 

Mr. Watson was born on July 2, 1944, in Thomaston, to the late Issac Watson and the late Mae Smith Watson.  He worked in road construction for the DOT.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Watson.  

 

Survivors include his son, Kevin (Donna) Watson of Ludowici, Georgia, sister, Glenda (McKinzie) Ellington of Thomaston, grandchildren, Dillon, Dalton, Khloe, and Kyla Watson, great-grandchild, Merritt Watson.

Jimmy Green Royal

Mr. Jimmy Green Royal, age 73 of Thomaston, died Tuesday, June 13, 2023, at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

Mr. Royal was born on April 28, 1950, in Upson County, Georgia, to the late Franklin Green Royal and the late Frances Shirley Royal.  He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Royal, and sister, Pat Matthews.

 

Survivors include his sister-in-law, Patricia Royal of Thomaston, numerous nieces and nephews, special cousins, Lynn Ellington of Thomaston, and Lynn Sprinkle Vickers of Pike County.

 

Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023, from Southview Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.  The family will receive friends on Friday, June 16, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Jane Perdue Dunnahoo

Mrs. Jane Perdue Dunnahoo, age 90, of Thomaston, died Sunday, June 11, 2023, at Riverside Health and Rehab.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dunnahoo will be held Thursday, June 15, at 2:00 PM, at Thomaston First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Barber and Rev. Bryan McPherson officiating. Interment will follow the service in Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.

 

Mrs. Dunnahoo was born in Thomaston on December 22, 1932, a daughter of the late Magnus and Lucille Ellis Perdue. She was a graduate of R.E. Lee Institute, and she was a homemaker. She was a faithful member of Thomaston First Baptist Church where in 1958 she began teaching the four year old Sunday School class. She was also a choir member and she served as the beginner choir teacher. She also served as a volunteer for the House of Care.

 

Mrs. Dunnahoo is survived by her sons, Mike Dunnahoo of Morrow, Dan Dunnahoo of Zebulon, and Jeff (Dianne) Dunnahoo of Zebulon; her sisters, Rita (Nicky) Nicholson of Fayetteville, Ellen (Dub) Bettis of Fayetteville, and Teresa (Ronnie) Lowe of The Rock; her brothers, Steve (Patsy) Perdue of Thomaston, John (Gail) Perdue of Fayetteville, and David (Linda) Perdue of Thomaston; her grandchildren, Mellisa (Bryan) Heard of Griffin, Miranda (Greg) Jones of Dallas, Chris (Summer) Hill of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Justin (Lindsey) Dunnahoo of Roswell, Natalie Dunnahoo of Atlanta, Patrick Dunnahoo of Zebulon; her great grandchildren, Jane and Will Heard, Breanna, Savannah, and Liam Hill, and Jackson and Zoe Dunnahoo. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Dunnahoo was preceded in death by her husband, William T. “Billy” Dunnahoo.

Hester Odessa Devereaux Reeves

Odessa Devereaux Reeves, affectionately known as “Granny”, passed away peacefully at Phoebe-Sumter Medical Center

on June 11, 2023.

 

She lived to a remarkable 101 years old and remained quick-witted and loving until the very end.  Odessa was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Earl Reeves; daughter, Mary Ann Sandlin; five sisters, and three brothers.  She was born January 20, 1922, in Long County, GA to James Caron and Emma Yarborough Devereaux. In 1939, she moved to Thomaston, GA to help her sister. In March of 1939, Odessa first met Earl Reeves at the Silvertown Theater.  On December 16, 1939, Odessa and Earl were married in Thomaston, GA. Odessa worked at Martha Mills as a Winder Operator for 39 years. She was a member of The Rock Baptist Church in The Rock, GA. Odessa was a skilled seamstress, an excellent cook and gardener, and an exceptionally hard-working lady throughout her life. Her hobbies included: solving crossword and word search puzzles, playing bingo, watching Wheel of Fortune, and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

 

Earl and Odessa Reeves were well known in the Thomaston-Upson County area for their garden and the quality vegetables they grew and sold at “186 Windsweep Farm Road.” She moved to Americus in 2010. At the time of her death, she resided at the Retirement Center at Magnolia Manor.  She is survived by her son, Lamar “Sparky” Reeves (Allene) of Americus; grandchildren, Cheryl Dieckmann of Kennesaw, George Dieckmann (Susan) of Newnan, Matthew Sandlin (Jennifer) of Sharpsburg, Kevin Reeves (Jenny) of Americus, Mandy Reeves Young (Ryan) of Americus, and Ryan Reeves of Boulder, CO. Also surviving are 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

 

A private family graveside service is planned for Tuesday, June 13th at 4 pm at Crystal Hill Cemetery in Thomaston, GA, with Reverend Daryl Brown officiating.

Gregory "Greg" Wade Phillips

Mr. Gregory "Greg" Wade Phillips age 66 of Thomaston Ga, died Friday June 9, 2023 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Phillips was born on December 30, 1956 in Americus Ga, to the late Oscar Wade Phillips and the late Barbara Jones Phillips. He was employed with Continental Tire where he worked as Controller for many years. Mr. Phillips was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and loved going on Mission Trips. He enjoyed coaching and officiating youth sports.

 

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Cindy Phillips of Thomaston Ga, sons Mr. Jon (Adrian) Phillips of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Brian "Beetle" (Arlyn) Phillips of Thomaston Ga. brothers Mr. Jeff (Dale) Phillips of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Ricky (Susan) Phillips of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Lynn (Lucinda) Phillips of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Debra (Ronny) Renfroe of Thomaston Ga, 4 grandchildren.

Ember Gray Adams

Miss. Ember Gray Adams age 3 of Talbotton Ga,  passed away Wednesday June 7, 2023. 

 

Ember was born on April 6, 2020 in Macon Ga, to Allan Adams Jr., and Jacey Tidwell Adams. She attended Small World Daycare and was taking swimming lessons with Allison Uphold. She was a member of Thomaston First Baptist Church and the Armstrong School of Dance. Ember enjoyed gymnastics, playing baseball with her brother and was his biggest cheerleader. She loved playing with her cousins, loved the outdoors, bananas, popsicles, and play-doh. She also enjoyed particiaping in the Buggy Days Pageant. Ember was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather Allan Adams and loved great grandparents.

 

Survivors include her parents Allan and Jacey Adams of Talbotton Ga, brother Allan Thomas Adams III of Talbotton Ga, maternal grandparents Barry and Jory Tidwell of Yatesville Ga, paternal grandmother Debra Adams and Gary Ellington of Talbotton Ga, cousins Raelyn Adams, Lillian Adams, Brooklyn Lawler, Livie Vaughn, Jossy Vaughn, numerous aunts and uncles also survive.

 

The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Sunday June 11, 2023 from 2:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Sarah Ellen Manley Turner

Ms. Sarah Ellen Manley Turner, age 85, of Milner, passed away June 8, 2023, at Brightmoor Hospice.  Ellen grew up in Zebulon, daughter of the late Hoyt Manley and Myrtle Murphey Manley. She was a 1955 graduate of Zebulon High School. Ellen worked for the airlines industry for most of her life, beginning her career with Southern Airlines and retiring as a Secretary from Delta Airlines. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Milner, and enjoyed reading, singing, and talking on the phone with friends.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Moore and Harold Turner, and her brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Mary Frances Manley.

 

She was a wonderful aunt to her nephews: Donny Manley, Tim Manley (Sharon), and Steve Manley (Gina); great-nephews and great-nieces: Boyd Astin (Kaylee), Jeremiah Manley (Nikki), Caleb Manley (Amanda), Jessica Bulloch (Justin), Claire Manley, and Sophie Manley; great-great-nieces and nephews: Taylor (Mack), Tyler (Josh), Emaleigh, Brantlee, and Barrett; great-great-great nephew: Easton; special cousins: Tommy Manley (Pat), Brenda Murphey, Jeff Murphey (Carolyn), Susan Sutton (Reggie), Sherri Moody (Terrell), Scott Johnston (Jennifer), Stacy Johnston (Barbara); and many other cousins, family members and friends who loved her dearly.

 

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 11, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Pastor Audie Wells officiating. Burial will follow in the Nazareth Baptist Church Cemetery.

 

Friends may visit the family on Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

Dorothy “Dot” Lee Sykes Ridgway

Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Lee Sykes Ridgway, age 83, of Griffin, passed away June 6, 2023, at Brightmoor Hospice. Dot grew up in Thomaston, daughter of the late William Robert Sykes, Jr. and Lucinda Glanton Sykes Barnes.  She married Ed Ridgway in 1964, and they made their home in Griffin where she worked as a cashier at the Big Apple grocery store. When the store closed, Dot became a bookkeeper working with her husband in the family business, Ed’s Carburetor and Ignition.  She liked the outdoors and enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter - Griffin, GA.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon Sykes.

 

She is survived by her sons: Robert Paul Ridgway (Regina), Ed Ridgway, Jr. (Alicia), and Bryon Keith Ridgway; grandchildren: Haley Michelle Ridgway, Rachel Nicole Ridgway, Rebecca Ann Warren and Kimberly Bryan Carter; sisters: Jeanette Pendley, Claudette Dumas, Barbara Ann Ray; brothers: David Barnes and Raymond Sykes, Thomas “Tommy” Sykes; many nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Dr. Jerry Light officiating.

 

A burial will follow in Westwood Gardens in Griffin.

Dovie Lee Ard

Dovie Lee Ard, 86 passed away Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was born July 4, 1936, in Hollanville, GA, the daughter of James S. Willoughby and Dovie Lee Willoughby. Dovie graduated from Zebulon High School, Class of 1955. Following graduation, she married her high school sweetheart Jack L. Ard Jr. in Hernando, MS. 

In addition to her parents James S. Willoughby and Dovie Lee Willoughby, she was predeceased by her brothers James and Floyd of Hollanville, GA, and her eldest son Jack L. Ard III of Fredericksburg, VA. 

 

She is survived by her husband Jack L. Ard Jr. of Virginia Beach, her son James S. Ard and his wife Linda of Margarettsville, NC, John E. Ard and his wife Michele of Lawrenceburg, KY, and her daughter, Deborah L. Welker of Virginia Beach, VA. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and their spouses, and her 19 great-grandchildren. 

 

A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2023, at Moody -Daniel Funeral Home at 10170 US-19, Zebulon, GA 30295 from 1pm to 2pm, with funeral services immediately following. 

 

Graveside service will be held at Friendship Presbyterian Church following funeral services at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. 

 

Those who wish to remember Dovie in a special way can make donations to the American Heart Association or Dementia Society of America in leu of flowers.

Terrell LaPage Brooks, Sr.

Mr. Terrell LaPage Brooks, Sr., age 76, of Meansville, passed away June 4, 2023. Terrell grew up in Cedartown, Georgia, son of the late William Terrell Brooks, Sr. and Clara Brooks.  He was an entrepreneur and jack-of-all-trades who owned several businesses over the years, loved working on cars, and fixing things in his spare time. He cherished the little things in life, including his daily coffee and trips to the gas station to buy lottery tickets or scratch-offs. He found joy in the outdoors, adventure in the unknown, and peace spending time with his family or pets. He loved unconditionally and showed grace to those around him. 

Terrell never met a stranger or missed an opportunity to say, “I love you”. He had passion for sharing laughter and kindness with everyone he met and found purpose in making others smile every day. He loved intentional conversation and cherished any chance to share wisdom with others, usually with an added joke or anecdote. He always had a smile on his face and treated everyone he met like family. His heart for people and joy in living life to its fullest was passed on to his three children and will forever be a part of his memory.

 

He was often referred to as “superman”, and made sure he had plenty of business cards to prove it.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Frances and brother, Charlie.

 

He is survived by his children: Beverly Brooks Zammett, Terrell Brooks, Jr. (Kelley Greathouse) and Gerald Brooks, who lived with him to support and aid with his healthcare; partner for 50+ years: Judy Ledbetter; grandchildren: Brittany, Makayla, Reid, Gapp, Landry, Lawson, Lane, Annalyse, Marissa, Brylei, and Ava; great-grandchildren: Owen, Maddox, Isabella, Madelyn, Delilah, Austin, and Aria; sister: Clara Odum; brothers: Floyd Brooks (Mary) and John Brooks; several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 9, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. 

 

Friends may visit the family on Friday, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., at the funeral home.

David Bledsoe Harwell

David Bledsoe Harwell, age 76, of Williamson, passed away June 1, 2023.  David grew up in Carrollton, Georgia, graduating from Carrollton High School.  He enlisted in the military and served in the United States Marine Corp.  After being honorably discharged, he enrolled in Georgia State University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

David’s father, Bledsoe Harwell, opened Blue Flame Gas Company in Pike County in 1966.  David took ownership in 1977 and has remained in that role ever since. He made a reputation for being able to fix any propane-related issue that you presented to him. In his later years, he loved to tinker with appliances that other people had already deemed irreparable.

 

David loved to shop for antiques. He built a fully-functioning 1920s era kitchen in his home from his finds over the years including all of the major appliances and popular kitchen gadgets of the time.

 

David had many hobbies.  He enjoyed playing tennis, canoeing, and riding his bike.  However, his greatest passion was flying hot-air balloons which he did for 35+ years all over the world. Throughout his years as a hot-air balloon pilot, he won many awards and even taught several championship pilots how to fly. He was also a licensed fixed-wing pilot for many years.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bledsoe Harwell and Hildred Carter Harwell, and his brother, Ricky Harwell.

 

He is survived by his sons: Michael Harwell and Jonathan Posner (Leonie); grandchildren: Louis and Toby Posner; brother: Danny Harwell (Joyce); former spouse and long-time friend: Reinita Harwell.

 

Friends may visit the family on Tuesday, June 6, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at 5 p.m.

Rita K. Johnson

Mrs. Rita Karen Johnson, age 64, of Thomaston GA, died Friday, June 2, 2023, at her residence.

 

Mrs. Johnson was born May 15, 1958, in Thomaston, to the late Roy and Nita Kelly. She was a graduate of R.E. Lee Inst.and the first Certified Pharmacy Tech in Upson County, and served for 43 years at Upson County Hospital as a Pharmacy Tech.

 

She is survived by her husband, Keith Johnson; brothers, Glenn Kelly of Thomaston, and Mike Kelly of Thomaston.

 

Her family will have a celebration of life at a later date.

Ann G. Bray

Mrs. Ann G. Bray, age 84, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Riverside Health and Rehab.  Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Bray will be held Saturday, June 3, at 11:00 AM, at South View Cemetery.  Dr. Ryan Christopher and Rev. Ted Kandler will officiate.

Mrs. Bray was born in Thomaston on October 1, 1938, to the late Leonard Garrett and the late Mildred Helms Garrett.  She was a graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and was employed at Upson Regional Medical Center from 1957 until her retirement in 2000.  She was a member of the American Medical Technologist Association and a member of First Baptist Church of Thomaston. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Bray was preceded in death by her husband, Tillman LeGare Bray and her brother, Paul Garrett.  She is survived by two sons, Scott (Debbie) Bray and Lee (Kay) Bray, both of Thomaston; five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Allen Lamar McDaniel

Mr. Allen Lamar McDaniel age 84 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday May 31, 2023 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McDaniel was born on November 5, 1938 in Atlanta Ga, to the late Willie McDaniel and the late Pauline Helton McDaniel. He worked as a truck driver for many years and served his country in the U.S. Navy.

 

Survivors include his brother Billy McDaniel of Decatur Ga.

 

It was Mr. McDaniel's wishes to be cremated. No Services are planned at this time.
