Gloria Laverne Welch Conway

Mrs. Gloria Laverne Welch Conway, age 77, of Thomaston, died Friday, December 29, 2023, at Upson Regional Medical Center.  

 

Mrs. Conway was born on February 2, 1946, in Thomaston, Georgia to the late Grant Helms and to the late Frances Ellerbee Helms.  She worked for the Upson County School System for 20 plus years and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Eugene Welch.

 

Survivors include her husband, Richard Conway of Thomaston, daughters, Jana (Tommy) Mimbs of Thomaston, Joni (Rodney Robinson) Moore of Thomaston, son, Brian (Melissa) Conway of Thomaston, sons-in-laws, Doug Moore, Robert Marks, grandchildren, Jenna (Roy) Copeland, Hannah-Claire (Regan) Green, Andrew (Hanah) Moore, Hayden (Kimmy) Marks, Kaleigh Grace Conway, Presleigh Kate Conway, and great-grandchild, Rowen Moore.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 1, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. from Mountain View Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 31, 2023, from 4:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Brenda Marie Woolf

Brenda Marie Woolf, age 62, of Zebulon, passed away December 27, 2023.  She was born in Atlanta, daughter of the late John Woolf and Ruby Jewel Martin Woolf.  She worked in the landscaping business for many years.  Brenda had a green thumb and enjoyed growing plants and being outdoors. Brenda loved music, was outgoing and never met a stranger. She was a kind and generous person who was always busy helping others.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James Woolf, Sr., and Mike Woolf, niece, Leslie Elliott and uncle, George “Jimmy” Martin.

 

She is survived by her sisters and brothers: Lynne Woolf Gillispie, Tommy Woolf, Patricia Woolf Betsill, Lois Woolf (Mike Lee), Jeff Woolf (Jan Woolf), and Vera Woolf Hammond; best buddies: Theresa “Gigi” and Stanley Pittman and Buddy Rawlins; step-daughter: Brigit Axton; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and friends.

 

A Celebration of Life service for Brenda will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at 12 :00 PM, in the Pine Mountain Church of the Nazarene, 1747 US Hwy. 19, Meansville.

Katie R. Spillers

Mrs. Katie Ruth Peaden Spillers age 76, of Molena, died Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at her residence. 

 

Mrs. Spillers was born on April 14, 1947, in Zebulon, Georgia, to the late Claude Peaden and the late Annie Ruth Peugh Peaden.  She worked as a registered nurse for 47 years at Upson Regional Medical Center and Spalding Regional Medical Center.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Danny Lamar Spillers, daughter, Toni Ellington, son, Scott Spillers, and sister Claudette Peaden. 

 

Survivors include her daughter Dana Gross of Molena, brothers, Wallace Peaden of Florida, James Peaden of Thomaston, nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, special niece, Tracy (Duane) Ruffin of Thomaston, and faithful dog, Pepper.  

 

Memorial services will be held on Friday, December 29, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. from Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends on Friday, December 29, 2023, from 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Jan Howard Jones

Mrs. Jan Howard Jones, age 73, of Thomaston, formerly of Molena, died Saturday, December 23, 2023, at Harborview Health Care.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jones will be held Wednesday, December 27, at 1:00 PM at Silvertown Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Caspers officiating. Interment will follow at Molena City Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Jones will receive friends on Tuesday evening, December 26, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.

 

Mrs. Jones was born at Ft. McPherson in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 4, 1950, a daughter of the late John Benton Howard and the late Evelyn Brannon Howard. She graduated from high school in Fulton County and was a teller with Bank of Pike until her retirement. She was a member of Silvertown Baptist Church.

 

Mrs. Jones is survived by her sons, Dan Jones of Virginia, and Brandon (Mandy) Jones of Thomaston; her sisters, Brenda Miller of Winder, Ann Wilbanks of Loganville, and Sue Hummer of Fairfax, Virginia; her brothers, Jeff Howard of Jackson and Benny Howard; and her grandsons, Seth Graham and Eli Jones. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, L. Maxie Jones.

Shirley Janette Daniel

Mrs. Shirley J. Maddox Daniel age 85 of Thomaston Ga, died Friday December 22, 2023 at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

 

Mrs. Daniel was born on August 7, 1938 in Butts County Ga, to the late Arthur Maddox and the late Louise McGraw Maddox. She worked as a Seamstress for 28 years with the William Carter Company and was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church.

 

Survivors include her husband Elwood Daniel of Thomaston Ga, daughter Melinda Key Cleveland of Americus Ga, sons Shawn Key of Thomaston Ga, Mark Key of Thomaston Ga, 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren.

 

Graveside Services will be held on Sunday December 24, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. from Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Sunday December 24, 2023 from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Faye N. Chambers

Mrs. Faye N. Chambers, age 83, of Yatesville, died Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Roberta Health and Rehab.

Funeral services for Mrs. Chambers will be held Saturday, December 23, at 11:00 AM, at Yatesville Baptist Church with Rev. John Wesley Long officiating. Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery. The family of Mrs. Chambers will receive friends on Friday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.

 

Mrs. Chambers was born in The Rock, Georgia, on February 15, 1940, a daughter of the late James A. Noel and the late Gladys Boyt Noel. She was a graduate of Yatesville High School. Mrs. Chambers was employed as a School Food Manager for Upson-Lee South Elementary until her retirement on May 31, 2002. She loved working in her flower garden. Mrs. Chambers was an active member of Yatesville Baptist Church.

 

Mrs. Chambers is survived by her son, Alan Chambers of Yatesville; her daughter, Linda (Todd) Bates of Thomaston; her sister, Claire Culverhouse of Columbus; her granddaughter, Karen (Michael) Stephens of Thomaston; and her great grandchildren, Dixie and Daniel Stephens. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

 

 In addition to her parents, Mrs. Chambers was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lewis Chambers, and her sisters, Hilda Moulton and Jean Warren.

Douglas LaVurgn Landers

Mr. Douglas LaVurgn Landers, age 68, of Concord, passed away December 15, 2023, at Wellstar Spalding Hospital.  Doug grew up in Griffin and graduated from Griffin High School in 1973.  He worked as a sheet metal mechanic at Low Temp Industries in Jonesboro for 47 years before retiring.  Doug enjoyed swinging on his front porch with his dog Sport, being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He liked to work in his yard and spent many hours cutting grass and keeping it beautiful. More than anything, Doug cherished his family and the time spent with them. 

He was preceded in death by his father, W. Lavurgn Landers, his sister, Lisa Anita Revell, and his grandson, Brandon Jobe Gobble.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years:  Sue Passmore Landers of Concord; children: Sarah Gobble (Michael) and Steven Landers all of Zebulon; grandchildren:  Shelby Diane Benson (Wesley Wigton), Elizabeth Irelyn Gobble, Ivy Mae Gobble, Isabella Diane Gobble, and Aubrey Leigh Gobble; great-grandsons: Elijah Alan Williams and Tucker Jobe Wigton who is due in March; mother: Betty Jean Landers of Milner; sisters: Shelia Jean Huey (Dennis) of Juliette, and Angel Landers Young (Jimmy) of Milner; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may visit the family on Monday, December 18, 2023, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home, and other times at the home of his daughter, Sarah Gobble.

Michael Wayne Carter

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Michael Wayne Carter, aged 51, of Griffin, who departed from this world on December 11, 2023. Michael was born at Ft. Jackson, SC, during his father's service in the US Army as a drill instructor. His early years were marked by a nomadic lifestyle, as he moved to various military bases and attended schools around the globe.

After graduating from high school, Michael dedicated 21 years to the US Army, where he completed multiple deployments and assignments to include tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. His distinguished military career was adorned with accolades such as the Army Commendation Medal, Achievement Medal, a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and numerous other commendations. Following an honorable discharge, he continued his service in the Army National Guard for several years.

Michael's passions extended beyond his military service; he found joy in music, reading, and cherished moments with his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father, Ray R. Carter.

Michael is survived by his devoted wife, April Brock Carter, and their children: Michael Carter II (Hollie), Lauren VanBrackle, Garrett Brock, Kaitlyn Brock, Olivia Carter, Sherri Brock, Morgan Brock, and Nora Brock. His legacy also includes a beloved granddaughter, Grayson Byrd Carter. He is further survived by his mother, Ruth Carter, and siblings, Ray Carter II and Jennifer Pritchard, along with several nieces and nephews.

Special friendships enriched Michael's life, including those with Michael Madsen, Barry and Cindy Smallwood, the brave men and women of the 10th Mountain Division, and the fellow Soldiers of the 148th Brigade Support Battalion.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Friends are invited to pay their respects and support the family during the visitation hours on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew and loved him.

Jack "Jay" Dover Jr

Mr. Jack "Jay" Dover Jr. age 62 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday December 13, 2023, at Eternal Hope Hospice. 

 

Mr. Dover was born on March 31, 1961, in Thomaston, Georgia, to the late Jack Lanny Dover Sr. and to Martha McCranie Dover.  He worked for Quad Graphics for 30 plus years, Mountain View Baptist Church as the Media Director and Upson Regional Medical Center's IT Department for nine years.  He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his in laws, Donald and Sandra Parks and brother-in-law Tommy Parks.  

 

Survivors include his mother, Martha Dover of Thomaston, wife, Lisa Parks Dover of Thomaston, daughter, Kassi (Ryan) Shumate of Yatesville, son Grant Dover of Thomaston, brothers, Scottie and David Dover of Thomaston, grandchildren, Mason and Kennedi Shumate.

Rodnie Darlene Edwards

Mrs. Rodnie Darlene Edwards, age 63, of Molena, died Tuesday, December 12, 2023, at Providence Health Care.

Mrs. Edwards was born March 16, 1960, in Monticello, Georgia, a daughter of

the late William Clay and the late Betty Coker Clay. At age 17 she was

employed with Thomaston Mills before moving to North Georgia where she was

employed with ManEurope for 10 years. She was later employed with the

Walmart Distribution Center in the shipping and receiving department for 10

years. In 2006 she moved to the Molena area to be closer to her family. She

loved fishing, hunting and watching old westerns. She also enjoyed horses

and watching them roam the pasture. She will be most remembered as a funny

and quick-witted woman who loved her family dearly.

 

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her sister, Cynthia Clay, her brother, William

"Billy" (Gwenelle) Clay, her daughter in law, Dallas Pierce Settle, her

grandchildren, Anthony Thiel and Kady Thiel, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul

Edwards, her son, Kevin Pierce, her sister, Jean Rutledge, and her brother,

Mickey "Doc" Clay.

 

A celebration of life for family and friends will be held later.

Richard Franklin (Opie) Witte

Mr. Richard Franklin (Opie) Witte, age 74, of Thomaston, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, December 11, 2023.  

A graveside memorial service will be held on Friday, December 15, at 2:00 PM, at Upson Memorial Gardens.  There will be a celebration of his life immediately following the service at the family residence.

 

Mr. Witte was born on December 15, 1948, at Fort Benning, GA, and he was raised in Carteret, NJ.  After graduation from Carteret High School, he continued his education to achieve a Bachelors degree, dual Masters degrees, and a specialist degree in middle grades education.  Rich taught seventh grade in New Jersey until moving to Georgia in 1984 where he continued his teaching career in the Thomaston-Upson County and Griffin-Spalding County School Systems.  Throughout his teaching career he received many accolades including Teacher of the Year in 2002.  Rich's love for life, laughter, and music always drew people to him.  He was the life of the party.  Rich was an avid history buff and loved to debate.  He loved the New York Giants.  He will be missed by many.

 

Mr. Witte was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Vivian Witte, two brothers, William Witte and Robert Witte.  He is survived by his loving wife, Cherrye McGee Witte; a sister, Linda (Arthur) Straley; a brother, Jonathan (Vicki) Witte, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. James Edward Ellerbee, age 80, of Thomaston, died Monday December 11, 2023, at his residence.  

Mr. Ellerbee was born on June 28, 1943, in Thomaston, Georgia, to the late James Robert Ellerbee and the late Lula Bell Clark.  He worked for Keadle Lumber Company and attended Calvary Lighthouse Church.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Wheeless Ellerbee, and several grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughters, Brenda Stitcher of Thomaston, Lisa (Jay) Howard of Washington State, stepdaughter, Francine (Charles) Guined of LaGrange, sisters, Virginia (Wayne Perkins) Anthony of Molena, Rhunette (Larry) Cogburn of Molena, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, girlfriend, Kathy Thomas, and her daughter, Tammy Thomas, both of Thomaston.

Mr. Bennett Darrell Smith, age 60, of Thomaston, passed away December 9, 2023, at his home. He grew up in Thomaston and worked in construction his whole life. Bennett enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and drinking beer with his buddies.  He especially loved spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Smith.

 

He is survived by his children: Derrick Smith, Kevin Smith, and Casey Brooks all of Thomaston; his mother: Betty Smith of Thomaston; grandchildren: Tehya Owensby, Kloey Smith, Darrell Cole Smith, Haley Newell.

Richard Craig Gayton

Mr. Richard Craig Gayton, age 64, of Concord, passed away December 8, 2023, at his home.  For most of his life, Richard worked as an automobile mechanic and for several years he owned and operated Bud’s Automotive in Zebulon. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan. His favorite drivers were Bill and Chase Elliott. Richard was fun-loving and enjoyed having a good time.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd “Bud” and Faye Gayton.

 

He is survived by his wife:  Kristie Gayton; son: Eddie Wilson of Woodstock; grandchildren: Preston and Clayton Wilson; step-children: Brandon Foster (Shannon) of AL, Jimmy Z. Foster of Zebulon, and Jacob Hightower of Barnesville; step-grandchildren: Brookleigh, Dalton and Evelyn Foster; brothers: Dennis Gayton (Daryl Hulsey) of Cleveland and Larry Gayton of Macon.

 

It was Richard’s wish to be cremated and no formal services are planned.

Brenda Gail Stephens

Ms. Brenda Gail Stephens, age 67, of Gay, passed away December 2, 2023, at her home.  She was born on January 8, 1956, daughter of the late Jesse Davis Stephens and Thelma Fenn Stephens. Brenda was a CDL truck driver and a member of Teamster Union Local #728.  She worked for the movie industry in Georgia, transporting movie crews.  She enjoyed motorcycle riding, fishing, riding horses, being on the water, and especially dancing.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Gay.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Davis “Blackie” Stephens.

 

She is survived by her children: Jesse Garner (KT) of Gay and Belinda Culbertson (Darrell) of Ocilla; grandchildren: Zachary Garner, MaKenzie Huggins, Selena Cowart, Hannah Culbertson, Devin Culbertson, and Jackson Culbertson; nephew:  Dean Stephens (JoJo), great-niece: Judy Stephens; great-great-niece: SkyLee Stephens; and many cousins.

 

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth Whitlock officiating.  Burial will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens.

Artie Wilson White

Mrs. Artie Wilson White, age 98 of Thomaston, died Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at Riverside Health and Rehab.  

Mrs. White was born on February 20, 1925, in Pike County, Georgia to the late S.O. Wilson and the late Bessie Thompson Wilson.  She worked at William Carter and Company as an Instructor and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, John Douglas White Sr., brother, Grover Wilson, Edward Wilson, Onzo Wilson, and sister, Thelma Sullivan.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy (Eugene) Williams of Thomaston, son, Johnny (Lynda) White of Pensacola, Florida, grandchildren, Mike (Shea) Sanders, Todd Sanders, Brannon (Ivey) White, Stacy (Russ) Brumbelow, and seven great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 4, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. from Shiloh Baptist Church.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 12:30 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Bessie Ann Kemp Burgess

Mrs. Bessie Ann Kemp Burgess, age 75, of Griffin, passed away November 29, 2023, at her home.  She was born in Haynesville, AL, daughter of the late Asa Kemp and Verna Mae LaFayette Kemp. She worked for Snapper Power Equipment in McDonough for 25 years before retiring. Mrs. Burgess enjoyed reading, flower gardening, and cooking. She especially loved trips to Panama City to eat seafood.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 23 years and the love of her life, Gene Burgess, sisters and brothers, Janie, Tommy, Dolly and Jackie.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Mark and Jennifer Steward; daughter and son-in-law: Della and Paul Horgan; grandchildren: Donovan, Blaine, Mason, and Chelsea; great-grandsons: Zander and Sebastian; a brother and two sisters: Buddy, Marie and Lucy; many nieces and nephews.

It was Mrs. Burgess’ wish to be cremated and no services are planned.

Mrs. Beatrice “Bea” Joyce Fye Smith, age 92, of Zebulon, passed away November 30, 2023, at her home. She was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania on September 10, 1931. Bea married Blair Joseph Smith on July 15, 1953, while he was serving in the US Navy. In the early years of their marriage, they lived on several military bases across the United States. After his military service, they resided in Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and returned to Georgia, settling in Zebulon in 1996. Bea was busy raising their five children as a homemaker and a baker throughout their marriage.  Her love of baking led her to open her home bakery in Pennsylvania baking pies, cakes, and her specialty, cheese cakes. She enjoyed flower arranging, ceramics, was an avid antique collector, was a member of bowling leagues, enjoyed tennis, and volunteered locally as a Girl Scout leader.   

She was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. Her strong faith and conviction in the Lord guided her through the challenges of being Blair's main caregiver after he suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1993 until his passing in 2005.

 

She is survived by her children: Karen White (John), Jerilynn (Jeri) Bozeman (Steve), Chad Smith (Tawna), and Todd Smith (Tammy).

 

Grandchildren: Jared White, Kasey Bozeman, Aimee Bozeman, Brian Smith (Nicole), Katherine Winkleman (Ken), Nicholas Smith, Samuel Smith, Ava Smith and five great-grandchildren.

 

Bea was preceded in death by her husband Blair, and son, Hal. 

 

There will be a visitation at Moody Daniel Funeral Home (Zebulon, Georgia) on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm followed by a graveside service in Moody Memorial Gardens. Chaplin Winfred Dixson will officiate. 

 

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all of “Queen Bea’s” caregivers. They were not simply caregivers; they all became family members.

Laura L. Burkett

Mrs. Laura L. Burkett, 93, formerly of Thomaston, died Friday, December 1, at The Landing of Winder.  Funeral services for Mrs. Burkett will be held Thursday, December 7, at 2:00 PM at Mountain View Baptist Church.  Dr. Ryan Christopher and Dr. Rex King will officiate, and interment will follow in the church cemetery.

 

Mrs. Burkett was born in Griffin, GA, on December 19, 1929, to the late Rev. John Jackson Cox and the late Mattie Lou Corley Cox.  She was retired from the William Carter Company with over twenty years of service. Mrs. Burkett was a founding member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burkett was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Douglas Burkett.  She is survived by three daughters: Robin (Jessie) Simpson of Hoschton, GA; Fran (Col. Ret. Bryant) Harp of Cameron, Montana; and Charlotte (Mike) Morris of Thomaston, GA; two sisters: Patricia (Reginald) Poteat of Laurinburg, NC, and Jeanette Shepard of Thomaston, GA;. Nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren also survive.

William F. "Billy" Rabon

Mr. William F. "Billy" Rabon,  age 89, of Thomaston, died Saturday, December 2, 2023, at his residence.  Funeral services for Mr. Rabon will be held on Tuesday, December 5,  2023, at 2:00 PM at Valley Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Travis Graham officiating.  Interment will follow in South View Cemetery.  The family will receive friends  Monday evening, December 4, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.

Mr. Rabon was born in Upson County on June 13, 1934, to the late John Irvin Rabon and the late Pauline Bryant Rabon.  He was a 1952 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and served his country in the US Army.  Mr. Rabon was a line superintendent for Upson EMC until his retirement in 1996.  Following retirement, he and Caroline enjoyed traveling to many different places.  Mr. Rabon was a Georgia Tech fan, and he enjoyed being outside working in his yard.  He loved his family dearly.  He was a long-time member of Valley Grove Baptist church where he had served as a deacon.

 

Mr. Rabon is survived by his wife, Caroline Burson Rabon; his children: John (Krista) Rabon of Pottstown, PA, Jeffery (Kristi) Rabon of Thomaston, and Nancy (Glenn) Scarborough of Hamilton, GA;  nine grandchildren: Christopher Rabon (Veronika), Jimmy Rabon (Jennifer), Will Scarborough (Rachael), Ashley Groveman (Joey), Ben Scarborough (Chelsea), Hayes Eubanks (Jasper), Will Eubanks (Ali Warren), Jobie Scarborough (Sarah), and Cabon Eubanks (Kat Dague); and seven great grandchildren: Natalie Rabon, Maggie Rabon, Connor Rabon, Isaac Scarborough, Vivian Scarborough, Noah Rabon, and Leland  Scarborough.

Alice Fay Canup Perry

Mrs. Alice Fay Perry, age 86, of Meansville, GA, died peacefully Friday, December 1st, 2023, at the residence of her daughter in Herndon, VA.

Mrs. Perry was born on September 21, 1937, in Thomaston, Georgia to the late Grady Haskell Canup and Ruby Mae Glanton. Mrs. Perry obtained her RN degree from Gordon College. She worked at Upson Regional Medical Center as an Operating Room nurse before moving to Thomaston Sports Orthopedics until her retirement. Mrs. Perry was a member of Christ Chapel Church and a devout believer in the Lord.

She is preceded in death by her parents Grady Haskell Canup and Ruby Mae Glanton, her husband Ray Leon Perry, and 3 siblings. She is survived by her children Drs. Cathy (Jim) Jones, Mrs. Karen (Kenny) Harris, Mr. Alan (Carol) Perry, Mr. Ted (Carol) Perry, sister Harriett “Nell” Smith, 8 Grandchildren, 10 Great Grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 3:00 p.m. from Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Saturday December 9, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Winifred Jean Tarleton

Mrs. Winifred Jean Tarleton, age 82, of Thomaston, died Thursday, November 30, 2023, at her residence. Funeral services for Mrs. Tarleton will be held on Sunday, December 3, at 3:00 PM, at Elkins Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Tim South officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends at Elkins Creek Baptist Church on Sunday afternoon from 2:00 PM until the funeral hour.

Mrs. Tarleton was born in Meriwether County, GA, on November 23, 1941, to the late Aaron Fuller and the late Frances Ella Rappe.  She was previously employed with Dundee Mills as a trainer.  Mrs. Tarleton was a member of Elkins Creek Baptist Church.

 

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tarleton was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Joe Tarleton and a son, Chance Tarleton.  She is survived by two daughters: Misty (Robin) Garner and Amy (Joe) Wright, both of Pike County; two sons, Timothy Jones of Thomaston and Brandon (Kirstie) Tarleton of Warner Robins; a sister, Audrey Sheekey of Florida; five grandchildren: Tyler Bridges, Trey Bridges, Kaylin Jones, Evan Jones, and Ryan Jones; and four great grandchildren.

Meredith Bree Kellett Lowry

Mrs. Meredith Bree Kellett Lowry, age 45, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, November 28, 2023.  Funeral services for Mrs. Lowry will be held on Tuesday, December 5, at  11:00 AM, at St. Peter the Rock Catholic Church.  Father Thomas Zahuta will officiate, and interment will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home Monday, December 4, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.

 

Mrs. Lowry was born on January 5, 1978, in Griffin, GA, to Duane and Pam Shumate Kellett.  She was a graduate of Upson-Lee High School,  Mrs. Lowry graduated cum laude from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law, where she also earned a Certificate in Advanced Legal Writing, Research, and Drafting. While in law school, Mrs. Lowry was recognized for her knowledge and performance in Legal Writing, Family Law, Gender Studies, and Pre-Trial Advocacy. Mrs. Lowry was also the recipient of a scholarship award from the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers.

 

Mrs. Lowry was admitted to practice in the Superior Courts through the State of Georgia, the Court of Appeals of Georgia, the Supreme Court of Georgia, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia, and the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Mrs. Lowry also served as the Guardian Ad Litem/Child Attorney in Upson County Juvenile Court. Mrs. Lowry was a member of Georgia Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) and was awarded a scholarship sponsored by GAWL while in law school. Mrs. Lowry was also a member of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association. Mrs. Lowry also practiced criminal defense, medical malpractice, and general civil law. Mrs. Lowry held both a bachelor's degree and master's degree in English in addition to her Juris Doctor. For eight years, Mrs. Lowry taught high school and college-level English courses. After becoming an attorney, Mrs. Lowry also taught paralegal classes at a local college, particularly classes in family law, contract law, real property law, and business organizations. She was self-employed with Lowry Law Firm, and she had previously been employed with the law firms of Alan Connell and Johnnie Caldwell, Jr.  Mrs. Lowry was a member of St. Peter the Rock Catholic Church.

 

Mrs. Lowry was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Karen Harris and a son, Dayne Lowry.  She is survived by her husband, Wayne Lowry of Thomaston; two children, Emme Lowry and Jackson Lowry, both of Thomaston; her parents, Duane and Pam Kellett of Thomaston; and a brother, Ryan (Ashley) Kellett, of Thomaston.
