Mr. John Raymond Karafa

Mr. John Raymond Karafa age 61 of Charleston S.C., passed away Wednesday September 29, 2021 at St. Francis Hospital in Charleston S.C.

Ms. Patti Chastain

Ms. Patti Chastain, age 66 years old of Clearwater Florida passed away September 28, 2021.

Patti was born on September 15 1955, she was born in Atlanta G.A to Ellis and Mary Nell Chastain. Her survivors include, Her partner Brenda Eubanks, Her brothers Randy and Eddie Chastain of Thomaston G.A, her 8 nieces Tracey Peterson, Emily Chastain, Bridget Royal, Aeriel Peterson, Jade Peterson, Chelsea Peterson, Dallas Raymond and Kaitlyn Peterson, as well as 1 nephew Brandon Peterson, and 12 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, father and her niece Wendy Eubanks.

She worked as a staffing coordinator for many years which she enjoyed tremendously. Her hobbies included gardening, listening to music and spending as much time with family as possible. Her proudest achievements were her family, children and friends. She was unique by always having time to listen to someone when they needed to talk. She would go out of her way to help anyone in need. She had an amazing personality that was filled with laughter and love. She was a great storyteller that everyone always wanted to listen to. She was always a positive person even in the last few difficult days of her life.

Mrs. Dorothy Ann Buchanan, age 49, of Willliamson, passed away September 29, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Clyde Scott Reeves

Ms. Clyde Scott Reeves, 78, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Graveside funeral services for Ms. Reeves will be held Thursday, September 30, at 2:00 PM, in the Emory's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.Ms. Reeves was born in Upson County on February 8, 1943, to the late Ira Henry Scott and the late Jessie G. Scott. She was a self-employed beloved nanny who raised many children as her own.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Reeves was preceded in death by a brother, Ira Ray Scott, and two sisters, Sherma Eller and Barbara Varner. 

She is survived by a daughter, Lynn Reeves (Bobby) Ellington of Thomaston; two sons: Kim (Marie) Reeves and Scott Reeves, both of Thomaston; a sister, Gaynelle Sloan of Florida; four grandchildren: Lacy Price, Dusty Ellington, Reese Reeves, and Cassie Alexander; and 9 great grandchildren. A special niece, Jill Duecker, and many other nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Louis Gregory “Greg” Taylor

Mr. Louis Gregory “Greg” Taylor, age 61, of Thomaston, passed away September 28, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Greg was born on February 28, 1960, in Orlando, FL. He was a pipefitter and welder for the local #72. Greg enjoyed farming, fishing and gardening. He was a member and deacon at Hebron Community Church in Thomaston.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis George Taylor, and two sisters, Theresa Sanchez, and Cynthia Taylor.

He is survived by his wife: Marina Taylor; daughter: Megan Vermilye (Zach) of Rome, Ohio; son: Chris Taylor; mother: Liz Corley; and sister: Jina Teston (Bobby) all of Thomaston; nephew: Thor Shiver.

Friends may visit the family on Friday, 6-8 p.m., at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 2, 11 a.m., at Hebron Community Church, 2069 Hendrick’s Church Road in Thomaston. Pastor Neil Anderson will officiate.

Burial will follow at 3 p.m., in Bethany Presbyterian Cemetery in Union Point.

Sgt. Todd Thomas

Sgt. Michael Todd Thomas, 51, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Funeral Services for Sgt. Thomas will be held Saturday, October 2, at 11:00 AM, at Mountain View Baptist Church with Rev. Chet Yates and Dr. Rex King officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home Friday evening, October 1, from 6 until 8 PM.

Sgt. Thomas was born in Thomaston, GA, on November 23, 1969, to George T. Thomas, Jr. and Elizabeth Nobles Thomas. He was a graduate of Upson High School, and served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1989-1999. During that time, he was stationed for eight years in Grand Forks, ND, and for two years in Berlin, Germany. Since 1999, he had been employed with the Griffin Police Department. Sgt. Thomas was a family man who enjoyed his grandchildren, hunting, motorcycles, and his animals. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shannon Slominski Thomas of Thomaston; his parents, George T. Thomas, Jr. and Elizabeth Nobles Thomas, of Thomaston; a daughter, Taylor (Brad) Ferguson and a son, Ty Thomas, both of Thomaston; a brother, Chad (Becki) Thomas, of Thomaston; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carol and Richard Slominski of Grand Forks, ND; two granddaughters, Paisleigh and Blakeleigh Ferguson of Thomaston; a brother-in-law, Ricky Slominski of Dickinson, ND; two sisters-in-law: Stacey Slominski (Don) of Grand Forks, ND, and Kristi Slominski of East Grand Forks, MN; nieces and nephews: Seth and Andrew Thomas, Jase and Brogann Slominski, Ryan and Landon Oster, and Kaleb Kluck. Many extended family members in North Dakota and his Blue Family also survive.

Ms. Dawn Marie Connett Taunton

Ms. Dawn Marie Connett Taunton, 83, passed away peacefully on Friday September 24, 2021, at NHC Lewisburg.

Dawn was born on November 11, 1937 in Muskegon, Michigan, to the late William Matthew Connett and Violet Estelle Culver Connett. She was a member of the First Cumberland Church of Lewisburg. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved and cherished her family. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her daughters Debra Marie (Earl) Hileman of Lewisburg, Tennessee and Rebecca Lynn Frase of Owosso, Michigan; grandchildren, Arren Ward (Heather) Hileman and Steven Earl (Katrina) Hileman; and great-grandchildren, Hannen Hileman, Heath Hileman, Hallee Hileman, and Lydia Hileman.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Cecil Ward Taunton, and her sisters, Barb Richardson, Bonnie Griffin, and Sharon Evans.

A Graveside Service will be conducted on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 10:00 AM at Southview Cemetery in Thomaston. The family will visit with friends following the service at the cemetery.

Mrs. Rena Viola McCullough Chanclor

Mrs. Rena Viola McCullough Chanclor, age 86, of The Rock, died Sunday, September 26, 2021, at her residence.

Mrs. Chanclor was born on March 23, 1935 in Sumter County, to the late Tom Dees and to the late Emmie Harris Dees. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husbands, Thomas F. McCullough and Doyal Chanclor, daughters, Irene Blakely, Lois Nicholson, Betty Ard, brothers, Rufus Dees, and Tommy Higner.

Survivors include her daughters, Janette Hoyal of Thomaston, Linda Sandefur of Molena, Lilly Giddens of Yatesville, son, Albert McCullough of Thomaston, 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 18 great-great granchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Elizabeth Trice Mohr

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Trice Mohr age 77 of Thomaston Ga., died Friday September 24, 2021 at Riverside Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Mohr was born on September 18, 1944 in Thomaston, to the late Albert Trice and to the late Mary Marjorie White Trice. She worked at Thomaston Mills as an office clerk and then a crossing guard for Upson County Schools. She was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Ken Partridge.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Mohr of Thomaston, daughter, Kayla Chambers of Thomaston, brother, Wayne (Gayla) Trice of Thomaston, sister, Ann Wiggins of Thomaston, daughter in law, Cindy Partridge of Thomaston, grandchildren, Elizabeth Drumm, Brooke (Drew) Sharp, Jimmy (Stephanie) Chambers, Ciara (Justin) Burks, and eight great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 26, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. from Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service at Upson Memorial Gardens.

Rev. Terry Wayne Threadgill

Rev. Terry Wayne Threadgill, 65, of Thomaston, died Thursday, September 23, at his residence. 

Memorial services for Rev. Threadgill will be held Sunday, September 26, at 2:00 PM, at the Yatesville Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Rev. Threadgill was born in Niagara Falls, New York, on August 22, 1956, to the late Robert Newton and Joy Stewart Threadgill. 

He was a 1974 graduate of Pell City High School in Pell City, Alabama. 

Rev. Threadgill was a former pastor of the Yatesville Baptist Church and was currently serving as interim pastor of the Russellville Baptist Church. He was a member of the Upson County Ministerial Association.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Threadgill was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Anne Gravette Threadgill. 

He is survived by his daughter, Amy (Jefffery) Price, II, of Fortson, GA; a brother, Roger Threadgill of Ragland, AL; four grandchildren: Brayden, Annestyn, Alivia, and Jeffery "Tripp" Price, III; a niece, Rachel Threadgill; and a nephew, Joshua (Jessica) Threadgill.

Mr. Jimmy Charles "Fuzzhead" Ford Sr.

Mr. Jimmy Charles "Fuzzhead" Ford Sr., age 73 of Thomaston Ga., died Wednesday September 22, 2021 at Providence Health and Rehab.

Mr. Ford was born on June 22, 1948 in Upson County, to the late Clarence Ford and to the late Irene Ford Garrett. He served his country in the US Navy in Vietnam, owned Georgia Concrete Company and worked in sales at Cemex Concrete for many years. After retiring he then went on to drive a school bus for the Upson and Pike County School Systems for five years. Mr. Jimmy was a member of Clarks Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Mark Smith, and brother, Jackie Ford.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn "Carol" Ford of Thomaston, Karen (Jeff) Kennedy of Thomaston, Cindy Ford of Whitesburg, son, Jimmy "Jim" Ford Jr. of Georgia, brother, Charles Ford of Florida, sisters, Rhonda Taylor and Charlene Hamm both of Hazelhurst, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, aunt, Laverne Hayes of Newnan, and uncle, Walter Allen of Carollton.

Ms. Coty Jordan Bailey Oxford

Ms. Coty Jordan Bailey Oxford, age 34, of Williamson, passed away September 22, 2021, at Kennestone Hospital in Kennesaw. Coty was born in South Carolina and moved to McDonough when she was young. She graduated from Luella High School.

Her passion was nursing. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Brenau University, her Master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Birmingham and was currently pursuing her Ph.D. from Walden University. For over 10 years, Coty had been a nurse at Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital. She enjoyed hanging out with friends, and watching Wyatt play baseball and football. She was excited that Emma would be cheering this year. Coty loved everything that her children were involved in. She also enjoyed GA football, NASCAR races, and riding four-wheelers.

She is survived by her husband: Charlie Oxford; children: Wyatt, Emma and Austin Oxford; parents: Larry and Elaine Bailey of Uvalda; sisters: Whitney Studle (Ryan) of Barnesville and Chasity Carter of Sparta; niece and nephew: Aubrey and Tanner Studle; mother-in-law: Pam Sams (William Salter); father-in-law: Gene Oxford of Orlando; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may visit the family on Friday, September 24, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.

Mr. Steven Earl “Steve” Williams

Mr. Steven Earl “Steve” Williams, age 75, of Pike County, passed away September 21, 2021. He was born in Zebulon, son of the late Alvin Earl Williams and Helen Marie Bevil Williams. Steve was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. He worked as a lineman at Bellsouth for 30 years before retiring. Steve enjoyed fishing and hunting.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra Lee Williams.

He is survived by his son: Bryan Williams (Heather Chandler) of Milner; grandchildren: Kyle Williams (Corrin), Gage Williams and Lydia Williams; great-grandchildren: Connor Williams and Lorelei Williams.

Mrs. Bette Adair Marken age 78 of McDonough died Tuesday September 21, 2021 at The Woods Senior Care in Griffin Ga.

Mrs. Marken was born on October 22, 1942 in Villa Rica Ga., to the late Boone Hunt and the late Cora Stewart Hunt. She worked for the High Museum of Art for many years and was a member of Peachtree Christian Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Robert Marken.

Survivors include her daughter Karen (Jay) Napoletano of Meansville Ga., son Jeffery (Terri) Marken of Baker Fl., brother Dan (Glenda) Hunt of Temple Ga., grandchildren Jessica (Rhett) Passmore, Becky Marken, 5 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Betty Lou Milam age 86 of Thomaston Ga. died Tuesday September 21, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Milam was born on December 5, 1934 in Spokane, Washington, to the late William Fairfax, and to the late Mabel Ward Fairfax. She was a housewife and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James Whett Milam, and son, Glenn Milam.

Survivors include her daughters, Rhetta (Tim) Peters of Warner Robins, Jamie (David) Banks of Thomaston, sons, Bobby (Gwen) Milam of Warner Robins, James Milam of Thomaston, sisters, Norma Peterson, Carol Silva, Pat Howard, Audrey Leighton, Fran Hudson, Shirley Fairfax all of Spokane, Washington, eleven grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Elsie Fogarty Watson, age 81 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday, September 21, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Watson was born on July 22, 1940 in Pike County, to the late Raymond Fogarty, and the late Mary Kelley Legg. She worked at the Thomaston Mills for 24 years and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Randall Watson, and brothers, Ray and Robert Fogarty.

Survivors include her daughters, Patricia Thiel of Thomaston, Judy Ingram of Thomaston, sons, Terry (Carolyn) Watson of Thomaston, Tim (Tammy) Watson of Thomaston, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lillian Waite Swift, age 73, of Thomaston died Monday September 20, 2021 at Harborview Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Swift was born on September 9, 1948 in Norfolk England to the late Milton Waite and the late Edith Boulter Waite. She was a member of Hope of the Generations Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sister Rosemary Elliott.

Survivors include her brother Daniel (Jill) Waite of England, sisters Marigold (Duncan) Harris of England, nieces Etta (Peter), Sally (Chris), Alison (Adam), Carey (Paul), nephews Paul (Lyn), Shane (Wendy).

Mr. Harold Douglas "Shorty" Camp

Mr. Harold Douglas “Shorty” Camp, age 79, of Molena, passed away September 20, 2021.

He was born in Haleyville, AL, son of the late Curtis Camp and Hazel Southern Camp. Doug moved from Haleyville to Atlanta when he was 10 years old. Later in life he moved to Portland, OR where he became an ironworker. Doug moved to Las Vegas and worked at The Plaza Casino as a card dealer in the 70s and 80s. From there, he moved to Panama City Beach, where he lived for years before moving to Molena in 2015, to be near his family.

He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, rolling dice, woodworking and gardening.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jimmy Camp and Neal Camp, sisters Sharon Camp and Mary Camp; and niece Sharon Camp.

He is survived by his nephews: Cory Camp and Chris Camp; niece: Ashley Dosier; sisters-in-law: Gail Owen and Judy-Camp Silvey; nephew: Ronnie Camp; niece: Tina Camp; great-niece: Crystal Standridge; and several more nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 26, at 2:30 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family on Sunday, 2:00 to 2:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Brown Western, age 75, of Thomaston, died Monday, September 20, 2021, at her residence.

Mrs. Western was born on April 12, 1946 in Lenore City TN, to the late Edward Brown and the late, Jeanette Lungsford. She worked as a housekeeper. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded by her sister, Betty Riley.

Survivors include her son, Ron (Annette) Western of Newnan; brothers, James Western and John Western; grandchildren, Makayla Western, Arianna Western, Zachary Western, Spencer Western, Olivia Western, Michael Western, McKenna Western; and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. James Gary Bridges age 64 of Thomaston Ga., died Sunday September 19, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Bridges was born on January 23, 1957 in Upson County, to the late James Edgar Bridges and to the late Dorothy Crook Bridges. He worked at the Thomaston Mills and was a member of Faith Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Rita Faye McCharge Bridges, and brother, Jimmy Howard Bridges.

Survivors include his daughter, Melissa Thrasher of Thomaston, son, Jason Bridges of Thomaston, brother, Mike (Terri) Bridges of Thomaston, sister, Donna (Bill) Cochran of Perry, grandchildren, Logan Lee (Desiree) Thrasher, Lilly Paige Thrasher, and several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Gladys Annette Lynch

Ms. Gladys Annette Lynch, age 79, of Pike County, passed away September 17, 2021, at Brightmoor Nursing Center in Griffin. Gladys was born in Concord, daughter of the late Charles Edward Lynch and Ethel Lee Tapley Lynch. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh. She liked to read her Bible, paint, work crossword puzzles and put puzzles together. More than anything else, Gladys loved her family with all her heart and enjoyed spending time with them.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Lynwood Lynch, her sister Cathy Lynch, and her sister-in-law Brenda Lynch.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Dolanda (DeDe) and Greg Speights of Griffin; granddaughters: Ashley Speights and Kaylyn Speights; brothers, sisters and their spouses: Doug and Linda Lynch of Zebulon, Patsy and Joe Mangham of Zebulon, and Dennis Lynch of Williamson; sister-in-law: Bobbie Lynch of Concord; many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Alvin Howard Nelson

Mr. Alvin Howard Nelson, 76 of Thomaston, GA died September 16, 2021, at Warm Springs Medical Center.

Mr. Nelson was born on February 23, 1945 in Thomaston Ga., to the late Paul Nelson and the late Mae Belle Nelson. He was formerly employed with Martha Mills where he worked as a supervisor for many years and later worked for Tire and Auto Master. Mr. Nelson served his country in the U.S. Navy and was a Mason. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Marsha Nixon Nelson.

Survivors include his sons Richard (Rebekah) Nelson of Meansville Ga., Chad (Kiwanda) Nelson of Macon Ga., sisters Barbara Nelson Cargile of Thomaston Ga., Shirley ( Kenny Patrick) Huckaby of Thomaston Ga., 4 grandchildren.

Mr. Lewis Lester "Buck" McCrary, Jr. of Molena, GA, died Thursday, September 16, 2021, at Brightmoor Hospice in Griffin. 

Funeral services for Mr. McCrary will be held Monday, September 20, at 11:00 AM, at the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Molena. Rev. Mark Harris will officiate, and interment will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Keith Sanders Boyt

Mr. Keith Sanders Boyt, age 64, of Thomaston GA passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at his home.

Keith was born on January 11, 1957 in Thomaston GA. He owned Boyt’s Radio Service for 29 years before retiring to pursue his hobbies of woodworking and gardening. Keith was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Benton Boyt.

Survivors include his wife, Myra Stephens Boyt, one son, Cody Austin Boyt, one daughter, Ashley Boyt Ledbetter and her husband, Cody Ledbetter, and one grandson, Tucker Lewis Boyt, and his mother-in-law, Shirley Stephens Johnson and her husband Eugene Johnson. Keith is also survived by his nieces and nephews and their families, Kristen Slaton (children Makenzi and Kaleb), Brittney McElhenney, Jamey and Chelsea McElhenney (children Riley, Kayden, Tucker, and Jackson), Ashton and Jennifer McElhenney (children Asher and Ace), and Stephen and Hayden Sample (children Haeleigh and Swayzie).

Mrs. Jennifer Britt Richardson

Jennifer Britt Richardson, age 44, of Thomaston, died, Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Jennifer was born in Thomaston, GA on November 13, 1976 to the late Ronald David Britt and Sheila Woodson Britt. She worked at Southern Crescent Technical Collage since October 2005 where she held the position of Student Affairs Specialist. She had earned and Associates Degree from Flint River Technical College in Administrative Office Technology and an Associates Degree from Central Georgia Technical College in Computer Support Specialist. She was only 2 quarters from finishing her Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a Minor in Information Technology from Middle Georgia State College.

Her favorite pastimes included, golfing with her mother at Jekyll Island, trips to the beach, and a trip of a lifetime to Ireland. She loved her family and friends, made you laugh with her wit and you never knew what might come out, always made you feel welcome. Loved her coworkers as well. In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Tony and Shirley McCard and her paternal grandparents Curtis "Red" and Bonnie Brannon Britt.

She is survived by her husband, Bennie Vyron Richardson, daughters Carlie LaDelle Richardson of Indiana, Delanie Claire Richardson of Thomaston, son Brodie Edward Richardson of Thomaston, mother Sheila Woodson Britt, brother Jeremy David Britt of Thomaston and numerous special aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday September 19, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday September 18, 2021 from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

Mrs. Christine Shumate Bailey

Mrs. Christine Shumate Bailey, 94, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at her residence. 

Funeral services for Mrs. Bailey will be held Thursday, September 16 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Dr. Derrick Keeter will officiate and interment will follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Thursday from 1:00 until the funeral hour.

Mrs. Bailey was born October 14, 1926, in Thomaston to the late Talmadge Evan Shumate and Pearl Mae Smith Shumate. She retired from Thomaston Mills Bleachery Division in 1988. Mrs. Bailey was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She loved to travel, and she had many telephone friends. Mrs. Bailey was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bailey was preceded in death by her husband, Joel Bailey; a sister, Carolyn Edmondson; and a brother, William Harrison Shumate. 

Survivors include her sons: David Robert (Patsy) Bailey of Thomaston, GA, and Reginald Mark (Judy) Bailey of Lawrenceville, GA; a granddaughter, Barbie (Jimmy) Hill of Thomaston; and two great grandchildren: Jessi Hill and Matt (Ashlyn Raybon) Hill, both of Thomaston. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Myris Alsobrook Kelly

Mrs. Myris Alsobrook Kelly, 82, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at her residence.

Mrs. Kelly was born in Thomaston on December 15, 1938, to the late Robert L. "Bob" Alsobrook and Maudell Kersey Alsobrook. She was a graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and was retired from Thomaston Mills where she worked in the data processing center. She and her husband, Ed Kelly, later owned and operated the Tara Hallmark Shops in Thomaston, Barnesville, and Griffin., Mrs. Kelly was a member of the First Baptist Church of Thomaston.

Mrs. Martha G. Royal

Mrs. Martha G. Royal age 76 of Thomaston Ga., passed away Monday September 13, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Royal was born on February 24, 1945 in Griffin, Georgia, to the late Erbie Goins, and the late Eva Bennett Goins. She worked as an Administrative Secretary for the William Carter Company were she retired after 43 years of service, and was a member of Jeff Davis Baptist Church. Her favorite pastimes included cruises, trips to the beach, growing beautiful flowers in her yard, and cooking special dishes for family and friends. She especially enjoyed time spent with her daughter whether it was a shopping trip, eating out, riding around or just hanging out at Monica's house. She collected a very large array of Snow Babies that have always been displayed beautifully in her home. She loved and enjoyed a long time fur companion, a cat named scoop. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers, David Lamar Goins, and Roy Edward Goins, sister, Mary Grace Goins.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond Royal of Thomaston, her daughter, Monica Ann Bridges (Benji Brown) of Thomaston, sisters Helen (Billy) Hagans of Fayetteville, NC., Linda (Wayne) Bailey of Thomaston, Margie (Gordon) Watson of Molena, sister-in-law, Lorie Goins of Molena, and brother, Eugene (Janice) Goins of Thomaston and several nieces and nephews.

Ms. Lisa Jenean Anthony Kohan

Ms. Lisa Jenean Anthony Kohan, age 51, of Zebulon, passed away on September 12, 2021, at Navicent Health in Macon. She grew up in Woodbury, daughter of the late Henry Edgar Anthony and Mary Zearl Reeves Lewis. Lisa was a coder and auditor for Navicent Health. She was an amazing Mother and Punkin who was beautiful (internally and externally). Lisa was very caring, strong, independent, quick witted and could think on her feet. She loved to watch crime shows and was famous for saying “I love you more than pudding and Dr. Pepper.”

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her niece, Jessica Paige Young.

She is survived by her daughters and a son-in-law: Maci and Corey White of McDonough, and Amberlee Kohan of Zebulon; son: Aiden Kohan of Zebulon; grandchildren: Alyssa White, Raelyn Ingersoll, and twins Caylie and Kennedy White; sisters and a brother-in-law: Rhonda Camp of Mill Valley, CA, Tina Kelley of McDonough, and Darlene and Mike Gooding of Byron; brother: Eddie Anthony of Manchester; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Dorsey Wayne Chastain

Mr. Dorsey Wayne Chastain, age 74, of Griffin, in Pike County, passed away September 12, 2021, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin. He was born in Thomaston, son of the late Dorsey R. Chastain and Pauline Passmore Chastain. He graduated from R. E. Lee Institute in 1965. Wayne worked for Georgia Power for 42 years before retiring as a Journey Lineman. He loved to watch college football and was an avid Alabama fan. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and going to the lake.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Chastain.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years: Dianne Adams Chastain; daughters and sons-in-law: Anita and Scott Sprayberry of Milner, Angie and Darrin Sandefur of Zebulon and Pam Williams of Pike County; grandchildren: Dustin Sprayberry, Amanda and Josh Creswell, Carlie and Joshua Fratt, and Adrianna Sandefur; great-grandchildren: Atticus Creswell and Josie Rose Creswell; sister and brother-in-law: Lavada and Ben Owens of Lawrenceville; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jerry Michael "Mike" Sauls

Mr. Jerry Michael “Mike” Sauls, age 71, of Thomaston, passed away September 12, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Mike was born in Elba, AL, son of the late Albert Lamar Sauls and Dorothy Bullard Sauls. He was a veteran of the United States Army. For 38 years he owned and operated Mike’s Welding in Zebulon. He was a jokester and enjoyed picking at people. In his younger years, Mike enjoyed drag racing with his 71’ Firebird. He liked to fish and watch NASCAR. Mike was a faithful member of New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Thomaston.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved dog, Bama.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years: Faye Sauls; daughters and a son-in-law: Christy and Rick Pollman and Niki Sauls all of Thomaston; grandchildren: Michael Vance Pollman, Sidney Pollman and Nickolas Ellington; brother and sister-in-law: Bo and Betty Sauls of Elba, AL; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 15, at 11 a.m., in the New Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Thomaston. Pastor Tim Bosworth will officiate. Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery in Thomaston.

Mr. Kenneth "Kenny" Franklin Murphy, age 53, of Thomaston, died Saturday, September 11, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Murphy was born on May 16, 1968 in Upson County to Tony Murphy and Pat Collins. He worked as a security guard at Upson Regional Medical Center. He is preceded in death by his grandson, Jesse Luke Elder.

Survivors include his mother, Pat (Glen) Collins of Thomaston, father, Tony (Linda) Murphy of Thomaston, his wife Robbin Gleaton Murphy of Thomaston, step children, Hayley (Parker) Elder, Logan (Katelynn) Kent, grandson, Will Elder, brother, Todd (Kim) Murphy, mother in law, Peggy Gleaton, brother in law, Byron Gleaton, and nieces, Meg and Alydia Murphy.

Mr. Roy Steven "Steve" Rogers

Mr. Roy Steven "Steve" Rogers, age 63, of Thomaston, died Saturday, September 11, 2021at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Rogers was born on November 24, 1957 in Thomaston, Georgia to Vivian and Roy Rogers. Steve was the shop manager at the Department of Transportation. He graduated from R.E. Lee High, class of 1975. Steve then attended Gordon College on a baseball scholarship. He served in the United States Air Force from 1981-1985. Steve was a devoted husband and father and an avid golfer. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Traci Watson, and father-in-law, Hubert Hughes.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa Hughes Rogers, daughters, Abby (Jeremy) Martin, Kellie rogers (Shane Pollard), Jordie Rogers (Caleb Pitts), grandchildren, Ansley Owens, Jaxon Martin, Saige Pitts, Nora Pollard, Rory Martin, Madison Martin, Karmyn Pollard, Carter Pollard, mother-in-law, Mary Hughes, brothers-in-law, Thomas Hughes, Phillip Hughes, Michael Hughes (Minette Korink), nieces, Carrie Watson, Courtney McKinley, Teagan Hughes and nephew, Joseph (Meagan) Hughes.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Herndon age 71 of Thomaston Ga, died Friday September 10, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Herndon was born on June 23, 1950 in Upson County to the late James Frye and Naomi Matthews Brown. She worked for Golden Corral as a meat cutter and was a member of Sylvia Hills Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her son, Rodney Merrill, brother, Jerry Brown, and sister, Tina Pace.

Survivors include her daughters, Rhonda (Cecilia) Moore-Childree of Thomaston, Saleeta (Ashley) Cleveland of Thomaston, brothers, Steve Brown of Auburn, GA, Larry (Annette) Brown Auburn, GA., sister, Cherry Brown of Auburn, GA., grandchildren, Tricia "Laney" Allen, Rodney (Megan) Clay, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jason Daniel Wright, 36 of Thomaston, GA died September 10, 2021 at Monroe County Hospital in Forsyth, GA.

Jason was born on June 7, 1985 in Ft. Benning to the late Odis Gene Wright Sr., and the late Marolyn Stanley Wright. He worked for SRS Construction and attended First Assembly of God. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his niece, Brooke Holley of Thomaston, nephew, Andrew James Wright of Thomaston, brother, Odis Gene Wright Jr. (Crystal Selph) of Thomaston, sister, Angie Melton of Vidalia, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins,

Mrs. Karen Lee Hopkins Bailey

Mrs. Karen Lee Hopkins Bailey, age 75, of Molena, passed away September 9, 2021, at Riverside Nursing Center in Thomaston. Mrs. Bailey was born in Nyack, NY, daughter of the late Coy Lee Hopkins and Jacqueline Kastner Hopkins. She was a loving mother who enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved flowers, and enjoyed playing Bingo, shopping, and going out to eat.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Eugene Bailey, Sr., and her brother Jimmy Palumbo.

She is survived by her children: Lisa Bailey and fiancé Jessie Coon, Raymond Bailey, Jr., Tamara Bailey and fiancé Senat Selimoski, William “Bill” Bailey and wife Nikki; grandchildren: Rebecca Newhall and husband Damien, Amanda Yuelling and husband Anthony, Austin Bailey, Derek Brown, Alexis Brown, Elijah Selimoski, Nikolas Selimoski, Kolby Bailey, Ariana Bailey and Dakota Bailey; great-grandchildren: Anna Marie Jacke, Penelope Yuelling, Mason Newhall and Devin Newhall; brothers and sisters: Kevin Hopkins, Jackie Talmadge, Beth Goddard, Connie Danner, Tina Moller, David Palumbo, and Pete Quick; sister-in-law: Brenda Miller; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mary Virginia Chambers Graves, age 96, of Thomaston, died Thursday, September 9, 2021, at Riverside Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Graves was born on January 16, 1925 in Thomaston Ga., to the late Walter Willis and the late Estelle Bell Willis. She was a homemaker and a member of Vega Community Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her first husband Fred Chambers, second husband Harry Graves, daughter Patricia Ann Dean, sons Carl Eugene Chambers, Fred Chambers Jr., brother Jake Willis, sister Betty Teal.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Sue (Jimmy) Whitten of Meansville Ga., sons Mr. Larry (Brenda) Chambers of Thomaston Ga., Mr. James Chambers of Meansville Ga., 14 grandchildren, 20 + great grandchildren, 13 great great grandchildren.

Mr. Wayne Bradley "Rooster" Turner

Mr. Wayne Bradley Turner, 54, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Turner will be announced later.Mr. Turner was born in Thomaston on March 16, 1967, to the late James Palmer Turner and Helen Louise Railey Turner. He was known as a ranblin' man and was employed by Evans Construction. Mr. Turner was of the Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Turner was preceded in death by three brothers: David, Glenn, and Tandy Turner. Survivors include a son, Bradley James "BJ" Turner of Thomaston; two daughters: Courtney (Jon Boi) Turner and Elise Turner (Josh "Blue") Hutchens, both of Thomaston; a sister, Susan Turner Wilson of Thomaston; two brothers: Bill "Tiger" Turner and Johnny Turner, both of Thomaston; eight grandchildren: Lexi Turner, Ryder Ann, Tracy Smith, Liam Smith, Dylan Hutchens, Ashlyn Raybon, Axl Hutchens, and Aleah Hutchens; and his fur baby, Dixie Chick. Mr. Nathan Edward "Eddie" Duke Jr. age 65 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday September 8, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Duke was born on May 2, 1956, in Reynolds to the late Nathan Edward Duke Sr. and the late Barbara Elliott Duke. He worked for Windstream. He is preceded in death by his parents.

She retired from Upson County Probate Court and was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Smith, and brother, Jimmy Birdsong.

Mr. Robert Michael "Mike" Roark

Mr. Robert Michael “Mike” Roark Sr., age 63, of Concord, passed away September 8, 2021, at Piedmont Henry Hospital.

Mike was born on June 16, 1958, in Atlanta, son of the late Roswold C. Roark and the late Mary Gregory Roark. He retired from Kroger with 35 years of service, and for the past 11 years, he was a bus driver for Pike County Schools. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid golfer with the Cedars and Cabin Creek groups. Mike was a dedicated Father and PawPaw and a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Roark.

Mr. Larry "Mark" Fordham Jr., age 57, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Fordham was born on November 12, 1963 in Thomaston Ga. to Larry "Flap" Fordham Sr. and Ernestine Hamby Fordham. He was the General Manager for RVSC Tech and was a a member of Christ Chapel Community Church.

Mrs. Mary Jane Smith Harness, age 80, of Thomaston, Georgia died Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Harness was born on May 20, 1941 in Coffee County, Alabama, to the late Wesley Smith, and the late Myrtle Danford Gray. She was the owner of Thomaston Ford and of the Christian faith. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny William Harness, her brother, Donald Smith and sister, Linda Caraway.

Survivors include her daughter, Nicole "Nikki" (Marty) Berman of Orlando, Florida, sons, David Edwards of Lake Wales, Florida, and Keith (Karen) Edwards of Lake Wales, Florida, sister, Ann (Earl) Drawdy of Groveland, Florida, grandchildren, Lynn, Kandi, Brandon, Justin, Dylan, Grant, Scarlett, and great-grandchild, Oakley "Shorty".

Mrs. Darlene Marie Marsh

Mrs. Darlene Marie Marsh, age 63 of Molena, passed away August 29, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. Darlene was born in the oldest town in the country, Plymouth, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of the late Edward Baker and Esther Holmes Baker. Darlene attended the oldest schoolhouse in the country.

Darlene’s first job out of high school was a medical tech in nursing homes. She moved to Georgia in 1994 with her husband Richard and started working in the medical field. She was employed by Spalding Regional Hospital, and then Upson Regional Medical Center where she worked her way up to Cardiac Telemetry Monitor. She loved her patients and they adored her. She was the most giving person. She loved animals, birds and hummingbirds, and enjoyed crocheting and driving the farm tractor.

Darlene was a loyal and devoted wife to her husband Richard Smith; she also leaves behind a sister: Joann Schofield; niece: Yvonne Schofield; cousin: Ronald Holmes; and step-sister: Melody Rasnake.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 15, at 3 p.m., in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.

Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Eugene Francis Nowicki Sr. age 92 of Avondale Estates Ga., died Saturday September 4, 2021 at Emory Hillendale Hospital.

Mr. Nowicki was born on July 19, 1929 in St. Paul Mn. to the late Frank Nowicki and the late Rose Lambrecht Nowicki. He was a painter. Mr. Nowicki served his country as an Army Ranger for many years.In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Candeleria Monta Nowicki.

Mr. James Tandy Turner. 67, of Thomaston, died Monday, September 6, 2021, at his residence. 

Funeral services for Mr. Turner will be held Friday, September 10, at 5:00 PM, at Mountain View Baptist Church. Dr. Ryan Christopher will officiate, and interment will follow in Trice Cemetery.

Mr. Turner was born in Thomaston on March 9, 1954, to the late James Palmer Turner and Helen Louise Railey Turner. He was a long-time employee of Scott Blackstock's Tire & Auto Master where he was a mechanic. Mr. Turner was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Glenn Turner, and his father-in-law, Monroe Brown. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Judy Brown Turner of Thomaston; a daughter Amy (Heath) Maddox, and a son: Dusty (Ashley) Turner, both of Thomaston; a sister, Susan Wilson, and three brothers: Bill Turner, Johnny Turner, and Wayne Turner, all of Thomaston; his mother-in-law, Martha Brown; and five grandchildren: Landon and Turner Maddox, Jake Helms, and Sam and Lilly Turner.

Mr. Johnnie Sanford Crews

Mr. Johnnie Sanford Crews, age 68, of Zebulon, passed away September 6, 2021. He was born in Griffin, son of the late Lewis Sanford Crews and Myra Ann Goodman Crews. In his early career he drove trucks for Transis, then operated his own business, Crews Service Station on Meriwether Street in Griffin, and later for Concrete Supply in Fayetteville, where he retired. Johnnie enjoyed auto painting, fishing, golfing, go-cart racing, and most of all he loved dancing. He was outgoing, happy, and liked to have a good time.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Billy Crews, niece Melissa Crews and sister-in-law Linda Crews.

He is survived by his children: Lou Ann Gardner (Gary), Heather Rogers (Wes), Kyna Strickland (Seth), Robin Martin, Jeffery Crews (Angie), and Devin Crews; grandchildren: Bradley Gardner (Hannah), Savannah Robinson (Wyatt), Hunter Kenway, Jordan Rogers, Keaton Strickland, Levi Strickland, Kaden Martin, Aaliya Martin, Conner Crews, Jesse Crews and Lucas Crews; brothers: Doug Crews (Julie Kilgo), Mike Crews, and Kenny Crews (Mary Jo); several nieces and nephews.

An outdoor viewing will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., under the north portico at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home.

Mr. Joel Franklin McDaniel, Jr., age 83, of Thomaston, died Monday, September 6, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Graveside funeral services and burial for Mr. McDaniel will be held Thursday, September 9, at 2:00 PM, in the Emory's Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Dawson officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 12:30 until 1:30 PM, at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.

Mr. McDaniel was born in Thomaston on September 3, 1938, to the late Joel Franklin McDaniel, Sr. and Florette Parker McDaniel. He served his country in both the Army and the Navy. Mr. McDaniel was a retired supervisor from B. F. Goodrich Martha Mills where he worked for 35 years. He was a loving husband and father who worked hard to provide for his family, even if it meant doing without himself. Mr. McDaniel was a member of Emory's Chapel Baptist Church.

Mr. McDaniel is survived by his wife, Mrs. Billie Ann McDaniel of Thomaston; two daughters: Johnnie Ann (Dana) Daniel of Thomaston, and Jo Lane Weeks of Griffin; a son: Joel McDaniel of Thomaston; two sisters: Agnes Hanson and Edna Smith; eleven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his fur babies, JoJo and Lucy.

Mr. Robert "Mike" Michael Adams, age 70, of Thomaston, died Monday, September 6, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Adams was born on December 28, 1950 in Thomaston, to the late Robert Curtis Adams, and the late Louise Littleton Adams. He worked as a driver for GA DOT and was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Shirley Bagley Nobles age 77 of Thomaston passed away August 19, 2021 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Nobles was born on October 10, 1943 in Newton County Ga., to the late Julian Jefferson Bagley and the late Neline Thornton Bagley. She worked as a caretaker for Thomaston Manor for many years. Mrs. Nobles was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she is preceded by her husband George P. Nobles., and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Walter Lewis "Butch" Willis, age 69, of Thomaston Ga, died Monday, September 6, 2021, at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Willis was born on April 8, 1952 in Thomaston Ga., to the late Walter Jake Willis and the late Betty Teal Willis. He worked as a commercial fisherman and a truck driver for many years. Mr. Willis was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Carmen Willis and sister Mary Day.

Survivors include his loving special companion Dawn Johnson Lumpkin of Thomaston Ga., daughter Jessica A. Willis of Thomaston Ga., sons David Willis (Robin Phillips) of Thomaston Ga., Todd (Jessica) Willis of Thomaston Ga., brother Mike (Cindy) Willis of Thomaston Ga., sister Patsy (Ronnie) Brooks of Molena Ga., grandchildren Jake, Luke, Kyle, Maddox & Maci Grace.

Mr. Eugene Nowicki age 92 died Saturday September 4, 2021 at Emory Hillendale Hospital.

Mr. Ernest Walker

Mr. Ernest Walker, 89, of Thomaston, died September 3, 2021, at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

Funeral services for Mr. Walker will be held on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at 2:00 PM, at East Thomaston Baptist Church. Rev. Joey Smith will officiate, and interment will follow in South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends at East Thomaston Baptist Church on Tuesday from 1:00 PM until the service hour.

Mr. Walker was born in Thomaston on April 25, 1932, to the late George Wayland Walker and Frances Iona Gilbert Walker. He was a 1950 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and attended Georgia State College. He served in the United States Navy from 1951- 1955 aboard the USS Bannock during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Walker retired as a Vice President of West Central Georgia Bank in 1997. After his retirement, he worked as A Poll Manager for Upson County. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, reading, and gardening. He was a great baker and cook. Prior to returning to Thomaston, Mr. Walker was a member of the Brunswick Kiwanis Club, Brunswick Exchange Club, and he served as a Brunswick City Commissioner for two terms. He later was a member of the Thomaston Lions Club. Mr. Walker was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church where he served as treasurer for forty years, as chairman of the Board of Deacons, and was a choir member. He loved his family, church family, and pastor.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Walker was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Walker Harris, and a son-in-law, Hans Schacht, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Geraldine Smith Walker; two daughters: Denise (John) Grogan of Flowery Branch, GA, and Dawn (David) Stewart of Alpharetta, GA; a son, Donald Walker of Thomaston, GA; a sister: Juanita Junkins of Griffin, GA; a brother, W. Ray (Sara) Walker of Alma, GA; three grandchildren: Nicholas (Renee) Schacht of Braselton, GA, Elisabeth Schacht Miller of Winder, GA, and Casey Anderson of Buford, GA; seven great grandchildren: Lily, Maddy, and Katey Schacht, all of Braselton, GA; Austin, Jacob, and Brooklyn Chasteen,all of Buford, GA; and Grace Miller of Winder, GA. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The Walkers attribute the success of their marriage to a genuine and abiding love for each other and their faith in our Lord. Wherever they lived, they remained faithful to God and His Church. Couples who pray together stay together! They say the words, “I love you” to each other every day and show that they mean it by their actions.

Mrs. Bettye Shiflet age 93 of Thomaston Ga., died Friday September 3, 2021 at her residence.

Mrs. Shiflet was born on May 23, 1928 in Fulton County to the late Fred P. Ward and the late Pauline Coates. She was formerly employed with The William Carter Company where she worked as a seamstress for many years. Mrs. Shiflet was a member of Thomaston Church of God. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her son Steve Shiflet and her sister Juanita Caldwell

Survivors include her husband Mr. Ed Shiflet of Thomaston Ga., daughter Mrs. Allison (Rod) Henderson of Athens Ga., son Mr. Bruce Shiflet of Brunswick Ga., grandchildren, Rustin Shiflet, Andrew Henderson (Megan), Ashley Bennett (Daniel), Summer Shiflet (Dylan), 5 great grandchildren and one on the way.
