REVEREND DR. ROY LEE "JIM" MOORE JR., 88 OF ALASKA

Reverend Dr. Roy Lee "Jim" Moore Jr, 88, of Nikiski, Alaska passed away August 25, 2018 in the Elmendorf Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska after battling complications of congestive heart failure. He was born in Thomaston, Georgia to Roy and Nannie Bell Moore. He was married to Barbara. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Georgia Tech, another master's from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. After serving in the Army he worked for the Alaska Baptist Convention in the late 50’s and early 60’s as the Director of Religious Education at the Anchorage State office. He was instrumental in the planting and development of Southern Baptist Churches in Many Alaskan villages. In 1967, he accepted the position of pastor at Faith Baptist Mission, which later became Mt. Redoubt Baptist Church, and moved his family to the Kenai area. He served that church and the community faithfully over the last six decades. His willingness to follow through on his commitment as a young man to God “to go where He wanted him to go, do what He wanted him to do, and say what He wanted him to say” , was truly an inspiration to all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Moore, sister Brenda (Harold) Barron, daughter Darby (Neil) Yosinski, daughter Judy Leichliter, son Lee (Pam) Moore, daughter Nancy (Doug) Scott, Grandchildren Nathan (Wan) Dennis, Hannah (Jeremie) Poche, Derek Leichliter, Melissa (Justin) Evans, Taylor (Saeed) Suliaman, Makenzie Moore, and eight Greatgrandchildren, Jacob T, Ayla , Jaylyn, Jacob P., Madelyn, Jubilee, Braxton, Carter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Nannie Bell Moore, his sister Mary Ann Boring, and his infant brother Billy Moore. Two memorial services will be held, the first in Nikiski, Alaska at Mt Redoubt Baptist Church on Wednesday, August 29 at 5:00 PM. The second service will be in Thomaston, Georgia at Valley Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, September 2 at 2:00 PM.

Mr. Merrell Lewis Brooks, 81, of Thomaston, died Thursday, August 30, 2018,
at his residence. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday,

MRS. HELEN AVERY EDMONDSON

Mrs. Helen Avery Edmondson, 80 of Thomaston died August 28, 2018 at her residence.

She has been married to her husband, Bobby Edmondson for 63 years this past June. She retired from the Upson County School System as a Bus Driver after 32 years, and she is a Charter member of Northside Baptist Church.

Mrs. Edmondson is preceded in death by her son-in-law, Carey Ellerbee. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Edmondson; daughter, Tracy Ellerbee; sons, Neal (Kay) Edmondson and Baxter (Trisa) Edmondson; grandchildren, Jason Edmondson, Adam Edmondson, Nick Henry, Casey Ellerbee, Carson Ellerbee, Kris Edmondson, and Kelly Teal; great-grandchildren, Lindsey & Cooper Edmondson, Avery Edmondson, Nash Henry, Kyia Ellerbee, Jaci Taylor, Charlee Kate Ellerbee, Jaxson & Jasper Teal, David, Rebecca & Turner McConnell.

There will be a private family service.

MRS. MARY EUNICE GISSENDANNER ADAMS

Mrs. Mary Eunice Gissendanner Adams age 101 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday August 28, 2018 at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

Mrs. Adams was born on September 24, 1916 in Geneva County Alabama to the late late J.W. Gissendanner and to the late Essie Mae Collins Gissendanner. Mrs. Adams was retired from the William Carter Company and was a member of Silvertown Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adams was preceded in death by her husband Robert Lee Adams, and two sisters, Grace Whittle of Sparta, Ga, and Gladys Romedy of Jacksonville Fl.

Survivors include her brother Joe Gissendanner of Slocumb Al, two sons Leon (Geneva) Adams and Leland (Deborah) Adams both of Thomaston Ga, and a daughter Susan (Roy) Fain of St. Charles Il. Her grandchildren include Tangi Adams, Alicia (Jeff) Neighbors, Ashli Fain, and Adam (Jaime) Fain, her step grandchildren include Yodi (Barry) Ellerbee, Tina (Sam) Coker, Lance (Dana) Greene, and April (Tom) Lowry. Mrs. Adams great grandchildren are Kaylee Neighbors, Kara Beth Neighbors, and Levin Neighbors and there are numerous step great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday August 31, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Friday August 31, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.

MRS. JEANETTE BARFIELD HELMS

Mrs. Jeanette Barfield Helms age 85 of Thomaston Ga, died Friday August 24, 2018 at her residence. 

Mrs. Helms was born on July 10, 1933 in Macon Ga. to the late Tom Barfield and the late Susie Mae Radford Barfield. She worked as a cad operator with the William Carter Company for many years until her retirement. Mrs. Helms was a member of Pine Mountain Church of The Nazarene. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters June Boyt and Juanita Waddle.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Donald Helms of Thomaston Ga, daughters Mrs. Donna (Gary Attanasio) Matthews of Roswell Ga, Mrs. Lisa (Jason) Massey of Chesapeake Va,, son Mr. Kim (Terry) Helms of Thomaston Ga, brother Mr. Danny Barfield of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Shirley (Gene) Craft of Thomaston Ga, grandchildren Bailey Beaver, Craig Helms, Nicholas Massey, William Massey, great grandchildren Garren Jones, Ellagrace Beaver.

MR. CHARLIE CLARENCE HILL

Mr.  Charlie Clarence Hill, 83 of Thomaston died August 22, 2018 at his residence. 

Funeral services will be Friday August 24, 2018 11:00 AM at East Thomaston Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Southview Cemetery.

Mr. Hill was born March 28, 1935 in Washington Co., GA to the late James Roy and Mary Louise Johnson Hill. He was retired from Martha Mills with 46 years of service and was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, a step-daughter, Brenda Jo Smith Adams, step-son, Michael Edison Smith and his brother, James Hill.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Hill of Thomaston, son, Craig Clarence Hill and his wife Lindsay of Thomaston, step-sons, Rev. Joey Smith and his wife Julie  of Thomaston and Richard Smith of Thomaston.

The family will receive friends Thursday August 23, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

MR. JERRY ALVIS HEWETT

Mr. Jerry Alvis Hewett, age 75 of Thomaston, died August 20, 2018 surrounded by loved ones at Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, Georgia.
 
Jerry was born on December 24, 1942 in Sargent, Georgia to the late Mike and Edna Hewett. Early in life, he moved to Thomaston, Georgia where he later worked at Thomaston Mills then at Keadle Lumber as foreman until his retirement.
 
Jerry is survived by wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Helms Hewett, his granddaughters Adrienne (Nick) Salter and Ashton (Chase) Fallin, his great-grandsons Hayden Salter, Jace Salter, and Henry Fallin, all of Thomaston, Georgia. He is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Sherry (Johnny) Brazelton and their daughter, Alex Brazelton of Thomaston, Georgia. He also leaves behind his in-laws, extended family, and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his most beloved son, Christopher Alvis Hewett, and his brothers and sister.
 
Jerry loved spoiling his great-grandsons, hunting, fishing, Toyota trucks, playing pool, and woodworking.
 
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow at Southview Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.

MR. STEVE "BUD" ROLAND

Mr. Steve "Bud" Roland, age 42, of Thomaston, died Sunday, August 19, 2018, at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Roland was born December 15, 1975, in Upson County to Cathy Elese Trentman and Steve Dewight Roland. He was a maintenance worker for ARI Paints in Orchard Hill GA, and of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his son, Steve Dewight Roland; mother, Cathy (Deno) Trentman; father, Steve (Kelli) Roland; grandfather, John Milton Chapman; sisters, Deanna (Daniel) Harrell, and Angelia Trentman (Dylan Spruill); brothers, Christopher (Chare) Roland, Timothy (Holly) Roland, Josh Monroy, David (Brandie) Griffeth, and Adam (Pam) Griffeth; and many, many close family, and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Roland will be held on Thursday, August 23, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with entombment to follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM.

MR. RUSSELL LEON TAYLOR

Mr. Russell Leon Taylor age 77 of Culloden Ga, died Thursday August 16, 2018 at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Mr. Taylor was born on March 17, 1941 in Jonesboro Ga, to the late Lloyd Taylor and the late Gadie May Taylor. He worked as a painter and contractor for many years. Mr. Taylor served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Lynda Taylor, daughter Mrs. Caroline Denise Crisp, step daughter Mrs. Tammy Harrell, son Mr. Rusty Taylor, step son Mr. Todd Albritton, brothers Mr. Paul Taylor, Mr. Leslie Taylor, sister Mrs. Betty Hoy, 5 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

Mrs. Norma Jean Hodge age 83 of Thomaston Ga, died Sunday August 12, 2018 at her residence. 

Mrs. Hodge was born on September 28, 1934 in Greenbrier Missouri to the late James and Pearl Harrell Owens. She worked as the Head Registrar with Upson County for many years. Mrs. Hodge was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Joel Hodge Jr. of Thomaston Ga, sons Mrs. Gary (Gayle) Eaker of Gadsden Al, Mr. Joel (Kim) Hodge of Houston Tx, brothers Mr. Ken Owens of IL, Mr. Gerald Owens of Mo, sisters Mrs. Mary Wilton of Mo, Mrs. Rosa Lie Hoffman of Ok, Mrs. Dorothy Bond of Mo, Mrs. Judy Maples of IL, 6 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren.

MRS. NANCY BELL PERRY

Mrs. Nancy Bell Perry age 66 of Thomaston Ga, died Sunday August 12, 2018 at her residence. 

Mrs. Perry was born on January 3, 1952 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Cecil Bell Sr. and the late Naomi Taunton Bell. She worked as a Registered Nurse for many years at Upson Regional Medical Center and Thomaston Hospice. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers Terry Bell and Cecil Bell Jr.

Survivors include her daughter Julie (Kevin Ryals) Dinkins of Thomaston Ga, sons Corey (Blanca Thomas) Dinkins of Lake Dallas Tx, Jed (Tammy) Dinkins of Molena Ga, Nathan Perry of Yatesville Ga, Micah (Kelli) Perry of Barnesville Ga, sisters Jennifer Diane (Ron) Monette of Lapeer Mi, Amy (Jason) Burke of Newnan Ga, sister in law Teresa (Robert) Wilson of Gaines Mi, 12 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild multiple nieces and nephews also survive and a host of special friends and she was a mom to neighborhood children.

MR. LAWRENCE EUGENE HAWKINS

Mr. Lawrence Eugene Hawkins, 81 of Maple Street in Thomaston died August 9, 2018 at his residence.

Funeral services will be Saturday August 11, 2018 2:00 PM at The Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Rev. Mickey Corley officiating. Interment will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Hawkins was born July 2, 1937 in Butler, GA to the late Charlie and Bessie Winter Hawkins. He was a member of Thomaston First Assembly of God Church and was retired from BF Goodrich with 30 plus years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Maebell Hawkins, sons, Jerry and Alton Nelson, daughters-in-law, Vicky and Marsha Nelson, brothers, Elton, Buddy and Troy Hawkins and his sister, Hazel Quinn.

Survivors include his daughters, Shirley Huckaby (Kenneth Patrick) of Thomaston and Barbara Nelson Cargile of Thomaston, son, Alvin Nelson of Thomaston and sister, Mae Franks of Thomaston, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at Coggins Funeral Home.

 

MR. BOBBY GENE SHAW

Mr. Bobby Gene Shaw, age 84, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at his residence.

Mr. Shaw was born November 10, 1933, in Upson County to the late Alvah and Louise Shaw. He retired  as an Engineer from the Georgia Department of Transportation and was of the Nazarene faith.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Shaw; daughters, Pam (Jay) Watkins and Bobbie Jo (Shane) Wilson; sister, Mildred Hobbs; brother, Billy Joe Shaw; grandchildren, Kenneth A. (Jackie) Boyt and Janet (Steven) Smith and 4 great-grandchildren. 

Mr. Shaw was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann Shaw; and sisters, Frances Railey and Mary Ann Stephens

Funeral services for Mr. Shaw will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018 at 11:00 AM in Upson Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 9, 2018 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

Mr. Charles Larry Wisham age 66 of Thomaston Ga, died Thursday August 2, 2018 at Emory University Hospital.

Mr. Wisham was born on November 16, 1951 in Thomaston Ga, to Lillian Marie Fellows Wisham and the late Richard Wisham. He was formerly employed with Martha Mills where he worked in the Purchasing Department for many years. In addition to his father he is preceded in death by his brother Wayne Wisham.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Susan Pitts Wisham of Thomaston Ga, son Mr. Daniel Wisham of Thomaston Ga, mother Mrs. Lillian Wisham of Thomaston Ga.

Graveside Services will be held on Tuesday August 7, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Monday August 6, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

MR. AUBREY LAMAR HALL

Mr. Aubrey Lamar Hall, age 92, of Thomaston died Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at the West Village Retirement Community in Thomaston. 

Mr. Hall was born on August 5, 1925 in Meriwether County, Georgia to the late Calvin Hall and the late Lillie Mae Rowe Hall. Mr. Hall served his country in the U.S. Army. He was formerly employed with Thomaston Mills Bleachery Division for 18 years and later worked for the Thomaston Police Department until his retirement. Mr. Hall was a member of Kings Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his son Aubrey C. Hall and brother Billy Hall.

Survivors include his daughter Mrs. Vickie (Fred) Schultz of Thomaston Ga, daughter in law Mrs. Cathy Hall, sisters Mrs. Betty Sollenberger of Lagrange Ga, Mrs. Peggy Hardy of McDonough Ga, 6 grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren.
