Reddon Mildred Sweat Smith,

Mrs. Reddon Mildred Sweat Smith, age 93, of Griffin, formerly of Thomaston, passed away October 5, 2023. Mrs. Smith grew up on a farm in Dixie Union, Ga. One of 12 children born to the late Lonnie Sweat and Annie Dean Sweat. She moved to Thomaston in 1971, when she and her husband, Hollis, opened Big Chic.

Most everyone knew her as “Granny” and the owner of Big Chic on Barnesville St. A family business that she stayed involved in throughout most of her life. She was known for her kind heart and dark black hair. She loved to go play the slot machines and it became almost a right of passage for our family. When she was at home, you could usually find her watching the Braves game or her afternoon “stories” and if it was warm outside, she would be sitting in the carport or blowing out the leaves. She enjoyed cooking but she loved it even more to see someone eat! Getting a second helping of her food was the way to her heart and her chicken and rice was unmatched. When asked what her secret was (living independently up until she was 91 without hardly ever being in the hospital), we assumed her answer would be two diet cokes a day or bacon with every breakfast, but instead her answer was always: Family. She lived through us and for us. To be loved by her felt special. You knew it because she made sure you did in her actions and her words.

She was the toughest person. We always say she was just built different. 93 years of love and loss, she stood strong in her faith and it got her through everything. She is already so missed and I hope she knew how truly loved she was. We will strive everyday to keep her memory alive and continuing the legacy she worked so hard to leave. Love you, Granny.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Daniel Smith, sons, Jerry Smith and Daniel Smith and her grandson, Chase Smith.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law’s: Tony and Dana Smith, Cookie Smith, and Vicki Smith; grandchildren and their spouses: Chris and Stacey Smith, Andrew and Kelly Smith, Chad and Jennifer Smith, Ali and Cory Watts, Drew Smith, Dylan and Jessica Smith, and Devin Smith; great-grandchildren: Haley, Anna-Claire, Brennon, Blakely, Taylor, Tyler, Addie, Austin, Graci, Ridge, Crew, and Piper; great-great granddaughter: Presley; her “adopted” daughter Debbie Partridge; and many nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
