Ray Brown Pitts

Mr. Ray Brown Pitts, age 77, of Zebulon, passed away October 19, 2023.  He was born in Zebulon, son of the late Otis Grady Pitts and Ruby Mae Brown Pitts.  Ray was very curious and smart from a very young age.  As a boy, he always loved Chemistry and asked for chemistry sets for gifts every year to conduct his own experiments at home.  He helped out at home after school and during the summer months on his parents' farm; and he helped his dad run their family store on Highway 19 just outside of Zebulon.  After graduating from Pike County High School, he served in the U.S. Army as a conscientious objector (i.e. he never carried a weapon) and as a medic in the Vietnam War.  He received The Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal during his service there.  He also took a correspondence course while there and earned his FCC License.

After being honorably discharged from the military, Ray converted his dad's little store into a shop where he made a living at repairing a variety of electronics.  He later moved on from repairing electronics to working at the University of Georgia Experiment Station in Griffin for 33 years before retiring as an Agricultural Research Assistant III/Soil Chemist.

The only thing Ray loved more than chemistry and his family was his Heavenly Father.  He devoted his life to learning what was written in the Bible, what it meant, how to apply it to his life and to diligently teach what he discovered to his family.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his aunt, Essie Pitts, his brothers, Merrell Pitts and Gene Pitts, a sister, Dianne Beckham, and his son-in-law, Jeff Passmore.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Cheryl Pitts; daughters and son-in-law: Angela and Greg Miller and Beth Passmore; granddaughters:  Anastasia Miller, Gabriella Miller, Samantha Passmore and Keira Passmore.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at 2:00pm at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Moody Memorial Gardens (MMG).

Friends may visit the family at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.
