Melanie Moore Sandlin

Mrs. Melanie Moore Sandlin, 65, of Thomaston, passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 13th, at the Jack Houston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City, AL, after a long, courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

Melanie was born December 13, 1957, in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Bob and Jo Ann Moore. She graduated from Sheffield High School in Sheffield, Alabama, in 1975 as the valedictorian. She went to Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tennessee before transferring to Auburn University where she attended pharmacy school and graduated with honors in March of 1980. There she met the love of her life, John David Sandlin. She married David on November 1, 1980, in Morristown, Tennessee. They spent 42 wonderful years together, and both recently retired as pharmacists after long careers. Melanie worked 26 years at Thomaston Prescription Shop and owned Roberta Drugs from 2014-2019 before retiring. Melanie was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Thomaston.  She was a supportive and loyal friend to many who loved her dearly. She loved traveling, reading, shopping, cooking, music, and the beach. Her greatest joy in life was being a parent and a grandparent. She spent a great amount of her life on the sidelines or in the audience supporting her children in their various extracurricular activities and was blessed to carry on the tradition with her grandchildren, who adored their “Mellie”.

In addition to her parents, Melanie was preceded in death by her beloved grandson Davis Bartley Tucker and her brother Robert Moore.  She is survived by her husband, David Sandlin, daughter, Elizabeth (John) Sillay of Forsyth, son, Jonathan Sandlin of Macon, grandchildren, Willa Sillay, Caroline Tucker, and Benjamin Sillay, and sister, Allison (Tim) Horner as well as several nieces and nephews.

Celebration of life service will be held Thursday, December 15, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston with the preachers officiating.  Burial will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. at Coggins Funeral Home.

The family is accepting flowers due to Melanie’s love for flowers and gardening.  In addition to flowers, contributions can be made to Thomaston First United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
