David Phillip Mathews

David Phillip Mathews, age 60, died Saturday, April 27th, at his home in Yatesville, GA, after a brief illness.

David was born November 25, 1963, in Henry County, GA, to Emmitt Lee Mathews and Eddie Jean Davis Mathews.  He was the last of six children born to the couple.  Like his father and brother before him, he worked in carpentry and construction. He later worked as a plumber with Johnson Brothers Plumbing in Forsyth. He loved fishing (as all Mathews men do) and was quite the dancer in his younger days.  He enjoyed sitting outside under the tree, where he enjoyed nature and listened to music.  David will be lovingly remembered as a beloved son, best-friend-brother, and fun uncle who loved grilling ribs and making homemade ice cream for his family.

David was preceded in death by an infant brother; his father, Emmitt Mathews; his sister, Jeannie (Tommy) Self; his brother, Willis Lee Mathews; his grandnephews, River and Harvard Brodnax; his niece, Adrian Dawson; as well as grandparents, Willis and Jessie Mathews and Eddie and Alene Davis.  Survivors include his mother, Jean Baugh; sisters, Laurie (Hubert) Gilbert and Lisa (John) Greene; nieces, Heather (Joel) Brodnax, Amanda Mathews, Meredith (Chris Bellew) Greene, and Hannah Greene; grandniece, Natalie (Charles Speir) Dawson; grandnephews, Gage Hovey and Reeve Brodnax; former sister-in-law, Laurel Mathews; faithful animal companions, Lola the dog and Daisy the cat; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.  He will be truly and deeply missed.

In accordance with his wishes, David was cremated. A memorial service will be held in his honor at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4th, at Antioch Baptist Church at 2269 Yatesville-Barnesville Rd in Yatesville, GA, with his cousin Rodney McCarty officiating. The family will receive friends at Antioch Baptist Church on Saturday May 4, from 10-11 a.m. Coggins Funeral Home
