David Bledsoe Harwell

David Bledsoe Harwell, age 76, of Williamson, passed away June 1, 2023.  David grew up in Carrollton, Georgia, graduating from Carrollton High School.  He enlisted in the military and served in the United States Marine Corp.  After being honorably discharged, he enrolled in Georgia State University where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

David’s father, Bledsoe Harwell, opened Blue Flame Gas Company in Pike County in 1966.  David took ownership in 1977 and has remained in that role ever since. He made a reputation for being able to fix any propane-related issue that you presented to him. In his later years, he loved to tinker with appliances that other people had already deemed irreparable.

David loved to shop for antiques. He built a fully-functioning 1920s era kitchen in his home from his finds over the years including all of the major appliances and popular kitchen gadgets of the time.

David had many hobbies.  He enjoyed playing tennis, canoeing, and riding his bike.  However, his greatest passion was flying hot-air balloons which he did for 35+ years all over the world. Throughout his years as a hot-air balloon pilot, he won many awards and even taught several championship pilots how to fly. He was also a licensed fixed-wing pilot for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bledsoe Harwell and Hildred Carter Harwell, and his brother, Ricky Harwell.

He is survived by his sons: Michael Harwell and Jonathan Posner (Leonie); grandchildren: Louis and Toby Posner; brother: Danny Harwell (Joyce); former spouse and long-time friend: Reinita Harwell.

Friends may visit the family on Tuesday, June 6, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will follow at 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson Research at www.michaeljfox.org.
