Myrtice Cena Matthew

Ms. Myrtice Cena Matthews, age 85, of Fayetteville, passed away March 6, 2023.

Myrtice was born July 9, 1937, to the late Herbert and Molly Biles. Although Myrtice had three older brothers, she grew up alongside her niece, Rose, who was more like her twin sister.

As a young woman, Myrtice enjoyed ice skating, riding motorcycles, and playing the piano. In 1967, she was wed to Mr. Grady Matthews. Although he affectionately referred to her as his “runt,” Grady treated Myrtice like his princess for the rest of their lives together.  The couple had seven children. She was a hard-working mother and longtime bookkeeper.

Myrtice was independent with a feisty, adventurous spirit. She was neat, tidy, and well-organized. She would spend most weekends camping, boating, and fishing. Most important in Myrtice’s life were the people she loved so dearly. She was proud of her family and her home that she cared for so well. She will be remembered as a loving and attentive mother and Nana to her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Along with her parents, Myrtice was preceded in death by her beloved husband: Wayne Grady Matthews; children: Vicki Matthews and Walt Matthews; lifelong best friend: Rose Hefner; and three brothers.

She is survived by her children and their spouses: Cindy and Bill Williams of Fayetteville, Jeff and Karen Matthews of Concord, Michael and Cheryl Burchfield of Griffin, Samantha and Richard Barnett of Senoia, Doug and Vicky Matthews of Woodbury; grandchildren: Danny Williams, Traci Proulx (Tommy), Shay Milner (Jeffery), Josh Matthews (Rosie), Daryl Matthews (Lyndsey), Jeremy Matthews (Ashley), Melissa Israel (Sean), Payton Hoerner (John), Tara Allen (Landon), Rayne Young (Seth) and Matthew Allen; 12 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Wednesday, March 8th in the chapel of Moody-Daniel Funeral Home. Friends may visit the family beginning at 2 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Woodbury City Cemetery.
