MR. JACKIE B BARFIELD

Mr. Jackie B. Barfield "Capt Jack", age 79, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin.


Mr. Barfield was born on July 24, 1937 in Thomaston to the late Bennett & Mary Elizabeth Barfield of Zebulon, GA.   He was preceded in his death by his brothers Joe (Rachel)Barfield of Concord, Georgia and Robert (Brenda) Barfield of Zebulon, Georgia.
 
He attended & graduated from Robert E. Lee Institute in Thomaston.  He was an outstanding forward on the mighty Rebels basketball team while he attended high school.  Shortly after high school he joined the United States Army National Guards where he served in the Mortar Platoon Sgt.  He was employed with Thomaston Mills where in retired after 40 plus years of service. 
 
Mr. Barfield was noted as being “Coach” where he coached 10 years The Winning Grasscutter Eagles on Matthews Field every Saturday.  He was loved by his young players and respected by them even today.  Of course gardening, fishing, nascar and football was his favorite things to do. Of course there was never a night the Friday Night Lights came on at Matthews Field, he and all his fellow coaches were not holding up the top railing while the Rebels took another victory.  He was a proud Rebel and Rebel supporter.   He also was a member of Kings Chapel Baptist Church of Thomaston.
 
He is survived by his wife Diane Barfield of Thomaston, son Tracy (Lisa) Barfield of Thomaston, daughter Jacklyn (Ricky) Lewis of Thomaston, grandchildren Jess (Ryan) Yopp of Thomaston, Cameron (Becca Bostwick) Barfield of Thomaston, John Dallas Barfield of Athens, GA. and a great granddaughter Caroline Lainely Yopp of Thomaston.   He is also survived by five step children, Patricia (Jerry) Royal of Thomaston, David (Lynn) Cummings of Thomaston, Brenda (Lee) Bunn of Thomaston, Freddie Kilgo of Thomaston and Barbara Langford of Barnesville and grandchildren Mandy Green, Jason Shoemake, Steven Cummings, Maddie Cummings, Chrystal Hammock, Jonathon Dickson, Heather Kilgo and 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister Hazel (Robert) Hammock of Thomaston and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Barfield will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Upson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.
 
The family would like to thank all who have supported them during a very hard time in their life and the Amazing Staff at Eternal Hope Hospice, where he was treated, cared for and loved by all who walked into his room.
