MR. JOHNNY LAMAR HELMS

Mr. Johnny Lamar Helms, age 70, of Thomaston, died Thursday, March 30, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Helms was born on December 14, 1945, in Upson County, to the late Henry Aldean Helms and the late Marion Gertrude Dean Helms. He was formerly employed with Keadle Lumber Company where he worked in sales. Mr. Helms was a retired Major with the U.S. Army having served 21 years. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Sylvia Helms of Thomaston Ga, daughters Mrs. Deana (Scott) Weaver of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Kim (Steven) Boyd of Thomaston Ga, sons Mr. Andy (Susie) Helms of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Walter (Kaylee) Vining Jr. of Macon Ga, brothers Mr. Fred Helms of Lawrenceville Ga, Mr. Ted Helms of Decatur Ga, Mr. Sammy (Janice) Helms of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Tim (Deana) Helms of Thomaston Ga, sisters Mrs. Sylvia Tucker of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Elizabeth (Jerry) Hewitt of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Pam (David) Boyt of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Brenda Barfield of Meansville Ga, grandchildren Jonathan Helms, Tyler Helms, Andrew Helms, Hannah Weaver, Jackson Vining , Katalyn Vining, Abigale Boyd, great grandchildren Gage, Jake, Camdyn.

MR. JOHNNY EARNEST TEAL

Mr. Johnny Earnest Teal, age 80, of Yatesville, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Teal was born May 27, 1936, in Molena GA, to the late Joe and Effie Long Teal JR. He retired from Thomaston Mills and Westek Mills as a Loom Fixer.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Teal of Yatesville; 4 sons; sister, Holly V. Thomas of The Rock; brothers, Gary (Dedra) Teal of Sylvania GA,, and Franklin Lamar (Teresa) Teal of Thomaston; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his son, sister, and brothers; Dorothy Teal, William Teal, Ezra Teal, Joel Teal, Herman Teal, and Terrel Teal.

Funeral services for Mr. Teal will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 2:00 - 3:00 pm at Coggins Funeral Home.

MR. MARVIN GWYN KING

Mr. Marvin Gwyn King age 78, of Molena, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at The Hope House in Griffin.
Funeral services for Mr. King will be held on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017 at 3:00 PM at the Beulah Baptist Church in Molena. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

MR. TERRELL TALMADGE BLOODWORTH

Mr. Terrell Talmadge Bloodwoorth, age 75, of Thomaston, died Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Bloodworth was born May 13, 1941 in Taylor County to the late Charlie and Essie Bloodworth. He worked for the  GA DOT, Thomaston Mills, and retired from Martha Mills.

Survivors are his daughter, Cindy (Gaylon) Culverhouse; son, Tony (Angela) Bloodworth; and sister, Irene Watkins all of Thomaston; grandchildren, Daniel Culverhouse, Tina Culverhouse, Jason Wainwright, and Brittney Bloodworth; great-grandchildren, Camden and Ray Ray. 

Memorial services for Mr. Bloodworth will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 2, 2107 from 4:00 - 6:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

MR. RONALD WAYNE COVENTRY

Mr. Ronald Wayne Coventry, age 82, died Monday, March 27, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Coventry was born January 29, 1935, in Pike County to the late Edwin E. and Reedy Frances Coventry JR. He was an Electrician for the Thomaston Mills.

He is survived by his nephews, Butch Coventry of Warner Robbins, and Tim (April) Littlejohn of Yatesville.

Mr. Bentley Clifton Coventry age 65 of Bonaire Ga, died Saturday March 25, 2017 at Pine Pointe Hospice.

Mr. Coventry was born on April 26, 1951 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Edwin and Martha Brooks Coventry. He was employed with Crown Cork and Seal where he worked as a steel worker. Mr. Coventry was preceded in death by his wife Mary Key Coventry.

Survivors include his daughters Mrs. Kristy (James) Tanton of Cochran Ga, Mrs. Angela Coventry of Bonaire Ga, brother Mr. Butch Coventry of Byron Ga, 7 Grandchildren, 1 Great Grandchild.

Mr. Jarrod Gibson Trice age 37 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday March 25, 2017 at his residence. 

Mr. Trice was born on November 2, 1979 in Thomaston Ga, to Beverly Blackmon Trice and the late Rufus Gibson Trice. He worked as an auto technician for several years.

Mrs. Angela Jean Heaton Howell age 58 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday March 21, 2017 at Piedmont Fayette Hospital.

Mrs. Howell was born on August 4, 1958 in Thomaston Ga, to Evie Pearl Bond Heaton and the late James Alvin Heaton. She was employed with Upson Regional Medical Center where she worked as a nurse for 30 years.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Al Howell of Thomaston Ga, daughter Mrs. Heather (Josh) Hall of Calhoun Ga, sons Mr. Ryan Martin of Athens Ga, Mr. Blake (Sarah) Howell of Athens Ga, mother Mrs. Evie Heaton of Thomaston Ga, brother Mr. Terry Heaton of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Donna Kendrick of Grayson Ga, 4 Grandchildren.

THE FATHER OF DR. BEN WILLIAMS OF THOMASTON HAS PASSED AWAY

Mr. Julian Paul Williams, 89, of West Point, Georgia passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at EAMC Lanier Nursing Home.

Mr. Williams was born Monday, August 15, 1927, in Harris County, Georgia the son of the late Rueben Williams and Louise Hadley Williams.  He graduated from West Point High School and West Georgia College serving in the U. S. Navy during World War II and The Korean War.  Mr. Williams was employed by Zachry Brothers, T. J. Beall Company and retired from George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital as Internal Auditor in 1992.  Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Edwin R. Williams.  Mr. Williams was a member of the First United Methodist Church of West Point.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Faye Barber Williams; his children, Dr. Benjamin P. (Tammie) Williams of Thomaston, Georgia and Daniel B. Williams of Carrollton, Georgia; four grandchildren, Ryan Williams of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jonathan Williams of Atlanta, Georgia, Lauren Williams of Washington, DC, and Nicole Williams of Thomaston, Georgia; two brothers-in-law, John W. (Trudy) Barber and R. Michael (Linda) Barber: three nieces and one nephew.

The family expresses their heartfelt thanks to the staffs of EAMC Lanier Hospital, EAMC Lanier Nursing Home and Chattahoochee Hospice for their kindness and support.

Graveside services will be held Monday, March 20, 2017, at 11:00 AM EDT in Marseilles Cemetery, West Point, Georgia.  The family will greet friends Monday afternoon in the Zachry Center of the First United Methodist Church of West Point from 1:00 PM EDT until 2:00 PM EDT with a memorial service following in the Sanctuary of the Church.  Reverend John Mattox will officiate the services.

Mrs. Eva Victoria "Vicky" Harris Nelson, age 67, of Thomaston, died Friday, March 17, 2017, at the Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Nelson was born on July 24, 1949 in Butler Ga, to the late Randall Underwood Harris and the late Judy Oliver Harris. She was formerly employed with Proctor and Gamble where she worked as an electrician. Mrs. Nelson was a member of Sylvia Hills Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry Paul Nelson.

Mr. John Thomas "J.T." Blount age 82 of Thomaston Ga, died Thursday March 16, 2017 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin Ga. 

Mr. Blount was born on November 17, 1934 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Roger Lawson Blount Sr., and the late Hattie Frances Johnson Blount. He was formerly employed with Mayfield Moving Company where he worked as a truck driver. Mr. Blount attended Thomaston First Assembly of God. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his brothers Mr. Roger L. MR. JOSEPH J. HAMMONDS, WORLD WAR TWO HERO

Mr. Joseph J. Hammonds, 92, of Thomaston, died Wednesday, March 15th, 2017 at Harborview Nursing Home.
Funeral services for Mr. Hammonds will be held on Sunday, March 19th, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in Yatesville. Burial with military honors will follow in the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family of Mr. Hammonds will receive friends at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home on Saturday from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
Joseph J. Hammonds was born in Yatesville on February 25th, 1925, the son of the late J. B. and Alberta Blount Hammond. He was a graduate of Yatesville High School.
Mr. Hammonds was inducted into the U. S. Army in October of 1943. He was sent to Europe and soon rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the 30th Division of the 117th Infantry Regiment and was a machine gunner in a weapons platoon. He was involved in five major battles including Normandy, Saint Lo and the Battle of the Bulge. He received five battle stars, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Presidential Battalion Citation, the Combat Infantryman Badge and two Purple Hearts for injuries he sustained in two major battles behind enemy lines. Mr. Hammonds was the highest decorated soldier from Upson County.
Nearly seven decades after the end of World War II France bestowed upon Mr. Hammonds its highest honor, the Legion of Honor. The award, first created in 1802 to honor service to France, was awarded to Mr. Hammonds after an examination of his combat service during World War II. The citation read, in part, "I am pleased to inform you that by a decree signed by the President of the French Republic on February 25, 2011, you have been named a "Chevalier" of the Legion of Honor. This award testifies to the President of the French Republic's high esteem for your merits and accomplishments. In particular, it is a sign of France's true and unforgettable gratitude and appreciation for your personal, precious contribution to the United States' decisive role in the liberation of our country during World War II." This award was signed by the French President on Mr. Hammond's 86th birthday.
After his discharge from the U. S. Army he returned to Upson County. He was employed at the Bleachery Division of Thomaston Mills and worked for 45 years until his retirement. After retiring he enjoyed farming and raising cattle.
Mr. Hammonds was a member of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and as caretaker for the New Hope Cemetery in Yatesville.
Mr. Hammonds is survived by his daughter, Jolynn Hammonds Maddox and his daughter-in-law, Teresa C. Hammonds, both of Thomaston; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel Helms Hammonds, his second wife, Betty C. Stansell Cumbie Hammonds, and his son, Steve G. Hammonds.

Mr. George Albert "Buddy" Gassett age 76 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday March 11, 2017 at Harborview Nursing Home. 

Mr. Gassett was born on July 8, 1940 in Thomaston Ga, to the late George Gassett and the late Elsie Rogers Gassett. He was formerly employed with Martha Mills where he worked as a spinner for many years. Mr. Gassett was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

MR. JOHNNY KEITH LEGG

Mr. Johnny Keith Legg, age 61, died Monday, March 6, 2017, at his residence in Thomaston.

Mr. Legg was born in Pike County to the late William Douglas and Laura Christine Legg. He was a machinist for TDK, member of Vega Community Church, and Veteran of The U.S. Navy serving on the USS Charles F. Adams.

He is survived by his mother, Laura "Christine" Adams of Meansville; daughter, Laura Ann (Ryan) Adams of Zebulon; sons, Joseph Kyle (Kristy) Legg of Molena and Brandon Keith (Theresa) Legg of Griffin; brother, Terry (Karen) Adams of Meansville; grandchildren, Taylor Adams, Claire Adams, Jackson Adams, Joseph Adams, Charlotte Adams, Vera Adams, Jude Adams, Harrison Adams, and Erika Legg.

Mr. Gene Garrett, age 78, of Thomaston, died Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Garrett was born December 20, 1938, in Upson county to the late Johnny and Beatrice Jackson Garrett. He was a Truck Driver for the William Carter and RC Cola for over 45 years before he retired and a member of the Ga Sheriff's Association.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Garrett; daughter, Sarah (Brian) McDaniel; son, Pete (Darlene) Garrett; brother, Richard L. Garrett; sisters, Billie Ann (Joel) McDaniel and Johnnie Faye; grandchildren, Lawren, River, and Lyric, all of Thomaston.

Mr. Boyd Andrew Garcia, age 51, of Thomaston, died Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Upson Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Garcia was born August 14, 1965 in Washington DC, to the late Paul and Armida Garcia Jr. He was disabled.

He is survived by his brother, Britt Garcia of Thomaston.

MR. JARRETT "RUSTY" ROYAL

Mr. Jarrett "Rusty" Royal, age 75, of Thomaston, died Thursday, March 2, 2017, at the Medical Center of Central Georgia.

Mr. Royal was born June 17, 1941, in Thomaston to the late Robert Green and Minnie Lee Royal. He was self-employed, and a member of the Thomaston Seventh Day Adventist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Gennell Royal; daughters, Michelle (Dennis) Weaver of Zebulon and Tracy (Pat) Alexander of Forsyth; sons Gary "Red" (Wendy Ellington) Royal of Thomaston and Howard (Mishelle) Mitchell of Forsyth; sisters, Carol (Jerrell) Roberson and Lane Royal; 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.  

Memorial services for Mr. Royal will be held on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at 2:00 PM at the Thomaston Seventh Day Adventist Church. The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 5, 2017 after the service at the church.

MR. WALTER ALLEN BELL

Mr. Walter Allen Bell age 86 of Barnesville Ga, died Wednesday March 1, 2017 at Providence Healthcare. 

Mr. Bell was born on October 7, 1930 in Lexington Ga, to the late John Henry Bell and the late Ellen Bryant Bell. He worked for GTE Sylvania for many years. Mr. Bell served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Milner Baptist Church and was a Mason. Mr. Bell raised Homing Pigeons for weddings and special occasions. He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley Spence Bell and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his daughter Mrs. Denise (Truman) Boyle of Barnesville Ga, son Mr. Gary (Dolores) Bell of Barnesville Ga, 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday March 4, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from Milner Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Milner Baptist Church on Saturday March 4, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
