THOMASTON SURGEON DR. WILLIAM "MACK" DALLAS JR.

Long-time Thomaston Surgeon Dr. William McKenzie "Mack" Dallas, Jr., died Monday, February 27th, 2017 at his home. He was 83 years old.
Memorial services for Dr. Dallas will be held on Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston with Rev. Rick Marson, Rev. Herb Flanders and Rev. John Dallas officiating. The family of Dr. Dallas will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall immediately following the service.
Dr. Dallas was born in Upson County on April 14th, 1933, a son of the late William McKenzie Dallas, Sr., and Katie Harris McKenzie. 
He was a 1951 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and, feeling called to surgical medicine, enrolled in Emory University College. He finished his studies in 1954 and was accepted into the Emory University School of Medicine; he graduated in 1958. He completed his residency in surgery at the Emory-Grady Memorial Hospital in 1963 and returned to Thomaston, where he opened a private practice of general surgery. He served his community in the surgical practice until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Dallas then accepted a position with the Mercer University School of Medicine as a part-time Professor of Surgery. He taught there until 2006.
Dr. Dallas was an avid outdoorsman and loved to travel. He and his wife, Bea Dominick Dallas, journeyed with his loved ones all over the world. He was especially drawn to the Flint River and was active in the Flint Riverkeeper organization. He held the position of Director Emeritus.
In 2003 Dr. Dallas was awarded the Thomaston-Upson Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award. As he accepted his award he said, "I am blessed to have practiced my beloved profession in a first class medical facility in my beloved hometown."
Dr. Dallas was a Fellow of American College of Surgeons and was also a member of the American Board of Surgery. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Thomaston.
Dr. Dallas is survived by his wife, Bea D. Dallas; three daughters, Katie Dallas of Yatesville, Lucinda Dallas of Thomaston, and Elizabeth (Bart) Gobeil of Savannah; a son, Bill (Alyson) Dallas of Griffin; and several grandchildren.

MRS. MARGARET MIX WASHBURN

Mrs. Margaret Mix Washburn, age 91, of Panama City FL, died Monday, February 27, 2017 at he daughters home in Thomaston.

Mrs. Washburn was born September 21, 1925 in Hume NY, to the late Charles and Lettie Mix. She is a retired secetary.

She is survived by her daughter, Suzanne W. Eubanks of Thomaston; 2 grancchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Washburn will be held by her family.

MRS. CATHERINE DUKETTE

Mrs. Catherine Dukette, age 84, of Westfield Indiana, died Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Maple Park Nursing Home in Westfield Indiana. 

Mrs. Dukette was born on October 8, 1932, in Chicago IL, to the late Thomas and Molly Byrd. She was formerly employed with Coca Cola where she worked in the accounting department for many years. Mrs. Dukette was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Dukette; daughter, Denise Rowland; grandchildren, Brandon Irrgang and Ryan Dukette.

Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Caroline (Larry) Clark of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Robin Karnes of Hollandale Fl, Mrs. Susan (James) Strausbaugh of Newnan Ga, and Mrs. Cynthia Duke Rodriguez of Noblesville Indiana; son, Mr. Shayne (Heather) Dukette of Kingston Tn; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at Coggins Funeral Home.

CAROLYN PATRICIA LEONARD BELL

Carolyn Patricia Leonard Bell was born May 24, 1934 in Chatsworth, Georgia and died on February 25, 2017 in Thomaston, Georgia. She was one of eight children of Ike and Kate Leonard. She graduated from Murray County High School and moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where she met her husband Julius Edward Bell of Moultrie, Georgia. They moved to Thomaston, Georgia in 1958 to begin their life together.

Pat was often known as Mrs. State Farm as she stood by her husband from the beginning of his career. She was the perfect hostess for countless State Farm functions and loved her State Farm family. This is where her famous pecan pie became so popular. Over the years, she made hundreds of pecan pies to share with family and friends.

Her love for music was evident as she began to raise her family. Pat played the piano for choir for her children and served on the music committee at First Baptist Church in Thomaston. Her son, Richard, has embraced her love for music in his many musical endeavors.

Digging in the dirt and watching things grow was the pastime that Pat loved the most. she took great pride in her yard and learning about new plants. She was a member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club for many years where she served in many capacities including President.

Over the past 9 months, Pat had been anxiously awaiting a new chapter in her life, and on Saturday, February 18, Pat became a great grandmother with the arrival of Noah Groves Bradford. Noah Groves is a namesake for Pat as her mother was Flora Kate Groves Leonard.

Pat is survived by her three children, Richard (Dick) Bell and wife Angie of Stockbridge, Georgia; Debbie Bradford and husband Roger of Muscle Shoals, Al; Nancy McAbee and husband Walt of Concord, Georgia. She leaves behind six grandsons: Walter Rhett McAbee and wife Cristy; Davis Nathaniel Bradford; William Edward Bell; Benjamin Groves Bradford and wife Olivia; Thomas Cooper Bell; and Patrick Harris McAbee. She is also survived by one great grandson , Noah Groves Bradford. She also leaves behind her baby brother, Johnny Leonard and his wife Buna of Dalton, Georgia, their children and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, of Thomaston, Georgia with visitation 2 hours prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Rev Leon Ellis Newman and Rev. Bill Barber will be officiating. 

Pallbearers will be Mrs. Bell's grandsons and Judson Matthews, close family friend of the Bell family.

The family would like to thank Thomaston Hospice for showing love and compassion and allowing us to honor our mom's wishes of staying home during her last days. This would not have been possible without the support of our caregivers who became like our family. Thank you Tammy, Teresa, Hazel and Kowanna, and a special thank you to Lindsey Matthews for always being there for us. We love you all.

Ms. Debra Flynn Bailey age 61 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday February 25, 2017 at her residence. 

Ms. Bailey was born on September 19, 1955 in Thomaston Ga, to the late William "Bill" Flynn Sr. and Marie Hayes Flynn. She was formerly employed with the Department of Corrections Probation Division where she worked as a secretary for many years. Ms. Bailey was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Lindsay (Craig) Hill of Thomaston Ga, son Mr. Dell (Tara) McWaters of Thomaston Ga, brother Mr. Bill Flynn Jr. of Tampa Fl, sister Mrs. Dale Flynn of Thomaston Ga, 6 Grandchildren.

Mr. William Thomas "Bill" Ferrell Jr. age 65 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday February 25, 2017 at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Mr. Ferrell was born on July 20, 1951 in Thomaston Ga, to the late William Thomas Ferrell Sr. and the late Addie Myrtle Brown. He was employed with Jones Harrison Furniture where he worked as a salesman. Mr. Ferrell was a member of Thomaston First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife Janie Wade Ferrell, brothers Alvin Brown & Jimmy Brown, sister Janice Payton.

Mr. Billy Gene Hammock age 58 of Yatesville Ga, died Wednesday February 22, 2017 at his residence. 

Mr. Hammock was born on January 15, 1959 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Jack and Elizabeth Wright Hammock. He worked for Riverbend Restaurant.

Mrs. Jones was born on January 21, 1929 in Thomaston Ga, to the late William Harvey and Naomi Ruth Denham Shaw. She worked for the William Carter Company as a seamstress for many years. Mrs. Jones attended New Life Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Boyd Glenn Jones Sr, sons Boyd Glenn Jones Jr. and Ralph H. English.

Survivors include her daughter Miss. MRS. ANN FULLER CRAVEN

Mrs. Ann Fuller Craven, age 80, of Thomaston, died Sunday, February 19, 2017, at Providence Health and Rehab Center.

Mrs. Craven was born April 18, 1936, in Meriwether County to the late Rev. G.O. and Annie Cato Fuller. She retired form the William Carter Company with over 30 years of service and was a lifetime member of Elkin's Creek Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Leon Craven; sisters, Faye Edenfield, and Inez Doggett; brothers, Aaron Fuller, Pruitt Fuller, G.O. Fuller Jr., and Durward Fuller. Survivors are her daughter, Rhonda (Chris) Bell of Thomaston; sister, Christine Stephens of Macon; grandchildren, Mandi, and Christin; great-grandchildren, Lexi, Blake, Dominic, and Belle.

Graveside services for Mrs. Craven will be held on Monday, February 20, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Elkin's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 20, 2017, after the service at Elkin's creek Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.

MR. JOHNNIE MORRIS JOHNSON

Mr. Johnnie Morris Johnson, age 77, of Thomaston, died Thursday, February 16, 2017 at his residence.
 
Mr. Johnson was born April 1, 1939, in Upson County to the late Sam W. and Irene Johnson. He retired with over 42 years from The Thomaston Mills Twister Room and was a member of New Life Pentecostal Church.
 
He is survived by his daughter, Vicky (Guerry) Partain of Thomaston; son, Steve (Shara) Johnson of Thomaston; sister, Donnie Gordy of Thomaston; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Johnson, Marvin Johnson, Hugh Johnson, Luther Johnson, Junior Johnson, and Bo Johnson; and sister, Louise Hammack.

Mrs.Winifred Voncile Salter Fowler age 82 of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday February 14, 2017 at Upson Regional Medical Center. 

Mrs. Fowler was born on October 7, 1934 in Thomaston Ga, to the late Edmond and Dolly Harris Salter. She worked as a beautician for many years. Mrs. Fowler was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and the Order of The Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her grandson Jonathan McCarty and sister Pauline Salter Rogers.

Survivors include her husband Mr. Jack Fowler of Thomaston Ga, daughter Mrs. Donna Howard of Thomaston Ga, sons Mr. Ralph (Becky) Ellington of Thomaston Ga, Mr. Eddie (Nancy Lowery) Fowler of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Carol Salter Bradshaw of Thomaston Ga, grandchildren Misty Conway, Jamie Samples, Josh Ellington, Drew Fowler, Jamie Gibson, Lilly Lowery, 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

MR. OTTO WILLIAM "BILL" REHMUS III

Mr. Otto William "Bill" Rehmus III age 74 of Thomaston Ga, died Wednesday February 15, 2017 at his residence.

Mr. Rehmus was born on May 21, 1942 in San Francisco California to the late Otto William II and Jacqueline Scott Rehmus. He was formerly employed with Buccaner State Park in Mississippi and was an avid fisherman. Mr. Rehmus served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wexford during Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his step father Jesse Scott, his sister Joann Hamlin and brother in law Bruce Hamlin.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Ramon Rehmus of Thomaston Ga, sons Mr. Robbie Rehmus of Ca, Mr. Bob (Karla) Werner of Palm Bay Fl, sisters Mrs. Lynda Favre of Winder Ga, Mrs. Janet Ladner of San Diego Ca, several nieces and nephews from Georgia and California also survive.

Rev. Walter Roscoe "Buddy" Morris, age 74 of The Rock, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Upson Regional Medical Center. 
Rev. Morris was born on May 27, 1942 in Porterdale Ga, to the late Willie Perry and Pauline Wages Morris. He worked as a truck driver for many years and was a shift foreman with Peerless Mill. Rev. Morris served the Lord as a Pastor at New Life Pentecostal Church and was the founder of Outreach Full Gospel Church.

Mrs. Ruby Scott Weems age 87 of Thomaston Ga, died Saturday February 11, 2017 at Providence Health and Rehab.

Mrs. Weems was born on February 9, 1930 in Dale County Alabama to the late John W. Scott and Thelma Tomlin Scott. She was formerly employed with B.F. Goodrich Mills where she worked as a spinner for 35 years until her retirement. Mrs. Weems was a member of Silvertown Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter Mrs. Patricia (Alvin) Coe of Woodbury Ga, son Mr. Steve (Joan) Weems of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Helen (Herbert) Salter of Thomaston Ga, grandchildren Jason (Laura) Weems, Josh (Kristin) Weems, Melynda Coe, Sherry (Jeremiah) Childree.

Mrs. Alva Gardner age 97 of Molena Ga, died Sunday February 12, 2017 at Riverside Health and Rehab. 

Mrs. Gardner was born on July 29, 1919 in Marshall County Al, to the late William and Gracie McLendon Mayes. She was formerly employed with Fieldcrest Mill where she worked as a spinner for 32 years.  Mrs. Gardner was a member of Molena Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Rayburn Gardner,son Edd Gardner, brother Beamon Mayes, grandchild Cornelious Gardner.

Survivors include her daughters Mary Gracie Gibson of Molena Ga, Linda Riggins of Molena Ga, daughter in law Melba Gardner of Columbus Ga, sons Larry (Judy) Gardner of Crossville Al, David (Brenda) Gardner of Molena Ga, brothers Franklin Mayes of Albertville Al, Johnny (Dinah) Mayes of Boaz Al, sister Rena Alice Sampson of Albertville Al, a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive.

Joseph Dylan Orrell, age 16, of Thomaston Ga, died Tuesday, February 5, 2017, at Egleston Children's Hospital. 

Mr. Orrell was born May 11, 2000, in Thomaston to Jessica Bieser and Joseph Orrell. He was a member of Zion's Chapel Methodist Church.

He is survived by his mother, Jessica (Dawn) Bieser of Thomaston; father, Joseph Orrell of Thomaston; sisters, Ireland Orrell, Wynterann Orrell, and Destany Thomas; brothers, Chandler Orrell, and Heith Orrell all of Thomaston; paternal grandparents, Karen Orrell, and Robert (Cindy) Orrell; maternal grandparents, Kathie Lundsford, Larry Hagewood, and Leslie Bieser; great-grandparents, Granny Grace, and Nadine Branch; and great-great-aunt Doris Pitts. He is preceded in death by his brother, Kyi-Kyi Orrell.

Funeral services for Mr. Orrell will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017, at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Zion's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will recieve friends on Thursday, February 9, 2017 from 5:00 - 7:00 PM at Coggins Funeral Home.

MRS. PATRICIA ANDREWS TIDWELL

Mrs. Patricia Andrews Tidwell, age 78, of Thomaston, died Monday, February 6, 2017 at her residence.

Mrs. Tidwell was born August 26, 1938, in Upson County, to the late Robert Hershell and Lucille Edwards Andrews.
She was manager of the One-Way Christian Book Store, and member of Mountain View Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband Mr. James Larry Tidwell of Thomaston Ga, daughters Mrs. Debbie (Mike) Short of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Sheila (Frank) Roberts of Thomaston Ga, Mrs. Theresa (Junior) Johnson of Thomaston Ga, son Mr. Doug Tidwell of Thomaston Ga, sister Mrs. Sheryl Kinsaul of Thomaston Ga. 8 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Tidwell will be held on Wednesday February 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Coggins Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Crystal Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Coggins Funeral Home on Wednesday February 8, 2017 from 12-2 p.m.

MRS. MARIE HILLEY HESTER

Mrs. Marie Hilley Hester, 84, of Thomaston, died Friday, February 3, 2017, at her residence. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, February 5, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home, and burial will follow in South View Cemetery.
